Leon's voice reminded me of Gary Barlow in early Take That.

Geraldine is really great...she deserves all the success

Here's the new James Bond soundtrack

Jack White & Alicia Keys

It seems after the "The Raconteurs" adventure, Jack White has found

another way of making a fool of himself. He should definitely stick with The White Stripes.

When I was a teenager I fell in love with the lead singer of the Teddy Bears singing "To Know Him Is To Love Him". This was based on the voice on the record as I never saw her live. The song was written by Phil Spector, a fellow member of the group. I thought that it might be possible to see the record on YouTube. Sure enough it was there:

It was not the image I had of the lead singer. Another fantasy destroyed. I looked her up on Wikipedia and discovered that she had changed her name from Annette Kleinbard to Carol Connors. She is now a songwriter and is best known for "Gonna Fly Now", the theme song from the film Rocky, which earned her an Academy Award nomination.

She is also the writer of one of my favourite songs, "With You I'm Born Again".

Here is Carol Connors as she is today.

You are selecting some very interesting vidoes. How does the popularity of these groups compare to bands such as Coldplay in Turkey?

Posted (edited)

In fact, the only band that is compared to Coldplay is Nem.

This band is not so popular (even in their hometown Ankara). I met the band members last spring in METU (Middle East Technical Univ) campus, where they gave a great concert. The frontman Hakan told me that Coldplay had a big influence on their music so

it was inevitable that they would be compared to them.

All the songs in their debut album, Güneşte Yanlız, have similar melodies to the one I posted the link to.

The others, Mor ve Ötesi, Emre Aydın and Teoman are very popular musicians here. And their albums sell hundreds of thousands of copies.

They're the mainstream bands/musicians of Turkey.

Unfortunately, local bands like Nem, who make much better music IMO, don't become as popular because as in most countries,

alternative music has fewer listeners.

C, you're an intriguing person. So much of what you post and topics of choice speaks (to me) of a remarkable woman. I'm interesting in what it's like to : be that. in Ankara, and in Turkey. It's a fascinating country how it's maintaied its role in a middle of such clashes of cultures from all around through history. What does Kurdistan mean in Ankara?

"The Kurds are a Sunni Muslim people living primarily in Turkey,

Iraq, and Iran. The 25 million Kurds have a distinct culture that is

not at all like their Turkish, Persian, and Arabic neighbors

(Hitchens, p. 36, 1992). It is this cultural difference between the

groups that automatically creates the potential for conflict. Of the

25 million Kurds, approximately 10 million live in Turkey, four

million in Iraq, five million in Iran, and a million in Syria, with

the rest scattered throughout the rest of the world ."

including refuge in Sweden and Australia. I've been to Kurdish celebrations in Melbourne (or was it Sydney (I ocsillated all over the place for many years, did the real geographical, (so compared to many, I suppose, "I've been everywhere, man..." (Oz song))) and marched in favour of the Iran revolution, Then after (and during) the awful Iran Iraq conflict, the brutal repression of the Kurds from all the nations its nation is broken up into. I've followed the writings of a Kurdish leader in Sweden, was dismayed that the Kurds seemingly didn't take the high ground and call for a life scentence for Saddam. Why continue with the selfdestructive spiral of recrimination that more and more legitimises what is horrible. I grieved for my children possibly seeing the hanging endlessly repeated on telly 24/7. Why is the death sentence still on the books (in Turkey)? Does it want to be in Europe? etc etc

J, I take it as a compliment, thank you.

No different than being that in Australia B)

Kurdistan : An autonomous entity located in Iraq and not recognized as a country by any of the countries in the world.

I hope it won't be in the books in the near future.

Does it want to be in Europe? etc etc

If you mean the EU, the answer is, yes it does.
