  1. I don't know how co-ordinated COINTELPRO (FBI) and MOCKINGBIRD (CIA) were but here is a sample of what the FBI did/(does?) with media and manufactured 'evidence'. In this case they created a file of false data in the form of documents and audio. They wire tapped Dr. Martin Luther Kings phone and spliced innocent conversations together to create a story that they then anonymously used to threaten King in the hope that he would committ suicide wfore going to Norway to receive the Nobel Peace price. The FBI had opened a COMINFIL file on Dr. King based on a couple of coincidences where a SWP member at one point and a CPUSA member at another had had a public chat with Dr. King. Based on this they decided King was a communist. As they were unable to find any real evidence of any dubious activities by Dr. King they decided to manufacture some. To the editor of Newsweeks credit, he refused to have anything to do with it (however I'm not aware of any story in Newsweek att thre time mentioning any such thing. Dr, King also refused to be intimidated but unfortunately he then became a target for termination. (from the 'some more coincidences' topic) "In an internal FBI monograph dated September 1963 found that, given the scope of support it had attracted over the preceding five years, civil rights agitation represented a clear threat to "the established order" of the U.S., and that Martin Luther "King is growing in stature daily as the leader among leaders of the Negro movement ... so goes Martin Luther King, and also so goes the Negro movement in the United States." This accorded well with COINTELPRO specialist William C. Sullivan's view, committed to writing shortly after King's landmark "I Have a Dream" speech during the massive civil rights demonstration in Washington, D.C., on August 28 of the same year: We must mark [King] now, if we have not before, as the most dangerous Negro in the future of this Nation from the standpoint of communism, the Negro, and national security ... it may be unrealistic to limit [our actions against King] to legalistic proofs that would stand up in court or before Congressional Committees. The stated objective of the SCLC, and the nature of its practical activities, was to organize for the securing of black voting rights across the rural South, with an eye toward the ultimate dismantlement of at least the most blatant aspects of the southern U.S. system of segregation. Even this seemingly innocuous agenda was, however, seen as a threat by the FBI. In mid-September of 1957, FBI supervisor J.G. Kelly forwarded a newspaper clipping describing the formation of the SCLC to the Bureau's Atlanta field office - that city being the location of SCLC headquarters - informing local agents, for reasons which were never specified, the civil rights group was "a likely target for communist infiltration," and that "in view of the stated purpose of the organization you should remain alert for public source information concerning it in connection with the racial situation." The Atlanta field office "looked into" the matter and ultimately opened a COMINFIL (communist-inflitrated group) investigation of the SCLC, apparently based on the fact that a single SWP member, Lonnie Cross, had offered his services as a clerk in the organization's main office. 14 By the end of the first year of FBI scrutiny, in September of 1958, a personal file had been opened on King himself, ostensibly because he had been approached on the steps of a Harlem church in which he'd delivered a guest sermon by black CP member Benjamin J. Davis. 15 By October 1960, as the SCLC call for desegregation and black voting rights in the south gained increasing attention and support across the nation, the Bureau began actively infiltrating organizational meetings and conferences. By July of 1961, FBI intelligence on the group was detailed enough to recount that, while an undergraduate at Atlanta's Morehouse College in 1948, King had been affiliated with the Progressive Party, and that executive director Wyatt Tee Walker had once subscribed to a CP newspaper, The Worker. Actual counterintelligence operations against King and the SCLC seem to have begun with a January 8, 1962 letter from Hoover to Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy, contending that the civil rights leader enjoyed a "close relationship" with Stanley D. Levison, "a member of the Communist Party, USA," and that Isadore Wofsy, "a high ranking communist leader," had written a speech for King. 18 On the night of March 15-16,1962, FBI agents secretly broke into Levison's New York office and planted a bug; a wiretap of his office phone followed on March 20. Among the other things picked up by the surveillance was information that Jack ODell, who also had an alleged "record of ties to the Communist party," had been recommended by both King and Levison to serve as an assistant to Wyatt Tee Walker. Although none of these supposed communist affiliations were ever substantiated, it was on this basis that SCLC was targeted within the Bureau's ongoing COINTELPRO-CP,USA, beginning with the planting of five disinformational "news stories" concerning the organization's "communist connections" on October 24, 1962. 21 By this point, Martin Luther King's name had been placed in Section A of the FBI Reserve Index, one step below those individuals registered in the Security Index and scheduled to be rounded up and "preventively detained" in the event of a declared national emergency; Attorney General Kennedy had also authorized round-the-clock surveillance of all SCLC offices, as well as King's home. 22 Hence, by November 8,1963, comprehensive telephone taps had been installed at all organizational offices, and King's residence. By 1964, King was not only firmly established as a preeminent civil rights leader, but was beginning to show signs of pursuing a more fundamental structural agenda of social change. Meanwhile, the Bureau continued its efforts to discredit King, maintaining a drumbeat of mass media-distributed propaganda concerning his supposed "communist influences" and sexual proclivities, as well as triggering a spate of harassment by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). 24 When it was announced on October 14 of that year that King would receive a Nobel Peace Prize as a reward for his work in behalf of the rights of American blacks, the Bureau - exhibiting a certain sense of desperation - dramatically escalated its efforts to neutralize him. Two days after announcement of the impending award, COINTELPRO specialist William Sullivan caused a composite audio tape to be produced, supposedly consisting of "highlights" taken from the taps of King's phones and bugs placed in his various hotel rooms over the preceding two years. The result, prepared by FBI audio technician John Matter, purported to demonstrate the civil rights leader had engaged in a series of "orgiastic" trysts with prostitutes and, thus, "the depths of his sexual perversion and depravity." The finished tape was packaged, along with an accompanying anonymous letter (prepared by Bureau Internal Security Supervisor Seymore F. Phillips on Sullivan's instruction), informing King that the audio material would be released to the media unless he committed suicide prior to bestowal of the Nobel Prize. "King, look into your heart. You know you are a complete fraud and a great liability to all of us Negroes. White people in this country have enough frauds of their own but I am sure that they don't have one at this time that is any where near your equal. You are no clergyman and you know it. I repeat you are a colossal fraud and an evil, vicious one at that. ... King, there is only one thing left for you to do. You know what it is. You have just 34 days in which to do (this exact number has been selected for a specific reason, it has definite practical significant. You are done. There is but one way out for you. You better take it before your filthy, abnormal fraudulent self is bared to the nation." Sullivan then instructed veteran COINTELPRO operative Lish Whitson to fly to Miami with the package; once there, Whitson was instructed to address the parcel and mail it to the intended victim. 26 When King failed to comply with Sullivan's anonymous directive that he kill himself, FBI Associate Director Cartha D. "Deke" DeLoach attempted to follow through with the threat to make the contents of the doctored tape public: The Bureau Crime Records Division, headed by DeLoach, initiated a major campaign to let newsmen know just what the Bureau [claimed to have] on King. DeLoach personally offered a copy of the King surveillance transcript to Newsweek Washington bureau chief Benjamin Bradlee. Bradlee refused it, and mentioned the approach to a Newsday colleague, Jay Iselin.""" ____________________________________ Further::: the US ARMY in dealing with domestic issues at the time had its own covert operations. They relied heavily on informants and media reports. Therefore there is a tie in here with MOCKINGBIRD and COINTELPRO. Excerpt from "IMPROPER SURVEILLANCE OF PRIVATE CITIZENS BY THE MILITARY" http://www.icdc.com/~paulwolf/cointelpro/c...lreportIIIk.htm "For the first time in its history, 48 the Army authorized a massive covert intelligence operation to be undertaken in connection with a civilian demonstration. In all, 130 Army intelligence agents were used in connection with the demonstration. 49 Some were used to penetrate protest groups coming to Washington: some were used to penetrate the groups in Washington who were planning the March, and still others were used to penetrate and report on the line of march. 50 Army agents, moreover, took still and motion pictures of the crowds, and secretly monitored amateur radio bands to learn of the demonstrators' plans. 51 Even after this large covert operation, the Army apparently was still relying primarily on civilian authorities and the media for information on civilian "dissenters." 52 In a memorandum to the Undersecretary of the Army from the Army Assistant Chief of Staff for Intelligence in late 1967, the Under Secretary was told: Army intelligence is not engaged in any concerted investigative effort to determine the routes of domestic discontent or the channels it will follow. The quantity and quality of third agency reports is sufficient to allow proper and timely analysis of the domestic situation so that commanders in the field will be properly informed at all times. 53 But if the Army had refrained from widespread use of its own operatives, it was nonetheless increasingly relied on by the White House and the Justice Department to provide information on civil unrest. In a meeting at the White House on January 10, 1968, for example, Attorney General Ramsey Clark told those present 54 that "every resource" must be used in the domestic intelligence effort and he criticized the Army for not being more selective in the reports that it was sending to the Justice Department. 55 According to former Army Chief of Staff Harold K. Johnson, this was but one of several meetings at the White House where the Army was urged to take a greater role in the civil disturbance collection effort. 56 "
  2. "The project was flawed from the outset owing to diplomatic/political considerations." The inability of the losers in Vietnam and Cuba despite decades of sabotage, economic terrorism, assassination attempts, and lies, to reinstall a corrupt regime economically favourable to a minority of wealthy Americans is not due to these excuses. The people of Cuba and Vietnam, free from this corruption and with a remarkable degree of prosperity considering the terror that the United Stetes government continues to inflict on these small nations, are the reason for failure. They don't want it, they're not buying. This refulsal to face facts and to try to construct reasons for failure that ignores the rights of self determination of nations who choose to not live under the umbrella of US imperialism serves a very useful purpose in allowing future such ventures.. 'if only...' bla bla bla. This debate is particularly interesting bearing in mind the paper prepared in Geneva recently by the Buxxxxes on a new wave of disruption, giving instructions on how to provoke a wide range of pressures on this small independent nation. If instead of denying trade, medicine, oil, travel etc to Cuba and showing a friendly respectful attitude, it's possible that the people of Cuba and its armed forces would have some sympathy to US opinion. I feel that Kennedy at least was willing to explore this approach. He spoke and through his action showed that he regarded presenting the benefits of a capitalist system is ultimately far more effective. However, and this is where I think the critical point lies, to accept the right of any people to make its own choices outside the control of the US right wing implies a degree of freedom for its own people. At a time of severe internal strife, I suspect this was simply unacceptable to the assassins.
  3. I don't know cars of this era. Some enhancements
  4. This gives me an opportunity to make a statement. I like the idea of being able to say I agree with someone and not have that taken as an apology for ALL things that person I agree with has to say. I welcome Tims input, and Johns, and Carrolls. (That such a statement by me is taken as a statement of agreement with all things said persons say in the past, present, or future, is wrong.) I agree with Tim on a few things, often not. I agree with John often, sometimes not. I agree with Carroll most of the time. That does not imply any favouritism or alliance, and I would expect them to treat me the same. I oppose any attempt by anyone to stop Tim expressing his opinions. I don't think this investigation would go very far without diverse points of view to deal with. I welcome rigorous scrutiny. Such scrutiny devoid of factionalism is sometimes missing. (and, no, Tim it doesn't mean that at all, you may both be uninformed or otherwise deluded)
  5. Hi Robin, he only appears in a very few mostly blurred frames of the Daniels film. There's also the three wheeler just visible coming down main.
  6. In reading a post about witnesses being killed, it occurred to me that more people around in the 60s had killed before than I'd thought. I actually don't think I know anyone who has killed (though I doubt they would tell me if they had). But back then with the second world war in 'recent' memory and the korean war as well, plus the vietnam war starting up, there probably was a significant number of still active men who had some experience in killing. (just wanted to log the thought for future reference.) I wonder if anyone has any idea what the percentage of veterans in Dallas 63 might have been?
  7. Yes John; I am fully aware of this photograph, although I am certain that many are not, and that most would have never understood the significance. Just as they do not recognize the significance that Eddie Meyers, who owned a Pepsi distributer dealership in Brooklyn, NY, and brother to Lawrence V. Meyers, was in Dallas, TX and met with and had dinner with his brother and Jack Ruby. Perhaps a larger version of the "Sign" in the background is called for. Tom P.S. Does anyone know who took the photo? I have never managed to find out and quit looking years ago. Hi Tom. It's a frame from the Hughes film when the motorcade is nearing the corner of Main and Houston. The version I have is very poor, so when I faintly spotted the sign I found a 60's Pepsi logo in an old ad and pasted it in to bring out the sign. Perhaps someone has a good copy of relevant frame? It's in the early part of the Hughes film.
  8. This is definitely the main reason why it failed*. It is clear from reading Richard Bissell’s account (Reflections of a Cold War Warrior) that the CIA expected that JFK would rescue the operation they knew would fail by ordering a full-scale attack. There is of course another reason that David Phillips does not mention. The failed attempt to assassinate Fidel Castro just before the invasion. Obviously Fidel would disagree with that statement. These 5 excuses sound like the ones that US tried to generate to explain 'how they were not allowed to win' in Vietnam. Is their ego so blind that they cannot accept that they are capable of just plain old fashioned defeat? http://lanic.utexas.edu/la/cb/cuba/castro/1961/19610423 -DATE- 19610423 -YEAR- 1961 -DOCUMENT_TYPE- SPEECH -AUTHOR- F. CASTRO -HEADLINE- CASTRO DENOUNCES U.S. AGRESSION -PLACE- CUBA -SOURCE- HAVANA DOMESTIC SVC -REPORT_NBR- FBIS -REPORT_DATE- 19610424 -TEXT- CASTRO DENOUNCES U.S. AGGRESSION Havana Domestic Service in Spanish 1830 GMT 23 April 1961--E (Speech by Premier Fidel Castro on the Popular University program) Invasion Analyzed Let us now analyze the plan of attack by imperialism against Cuba, and why they landed where they did, and why they did not land on the other side. In the first place they exaggerated the number of mercenaries. Instead of fouror five thousand they did not have anywhere near that number. What they landed here was the group they had in Guatemala. They have another in Caimanera, but it is smaller and not armed as well. The group that had the most arms, were better trained, and had air cover, was the Guatemala group. At first it appeared that the intentions were to take the Isle of Pines, to take it and free the war criminals imprisoned there and add them to their ranks and to take a piece of national territory and then give us the problem of dislodging them. They were to direct their efforts toward gaining a piece of territory to establish there a provisional government from which to operate. The establishment of a base on our territory would have given them a base to bomb our country and would have created a difficult situation for us. We had to stop this at all costs. The Isle of Pines was ideal for the establishment of a base on our territory which would open the road for aid on territory of Cuba and make unnecessary to use of other countries to launch aggressions. But here is what we did. We filled the Isle of Pines with tens of batallions of cannon and tanks, we posted a force in the Isle of Pines that make the Isle of Pines invulnerable. A huge army would have been needed to attack it. They could not count on Escambray after it had been cleaned out. Would imperialism land mercenaries with just one combat force, or would it split its force into several groups, that was the problem if faced. Would it try to introduce groups and send them arms from the air, to establish many counterrevolutionary networks. We took measures to counter multiple landings, concentrating on logical points, in case they divided force into many groups. We concentrated especially on places giving access to the mountains. A few days before the aggression, many U.S. papers carried the report that imperialism had decided on splitting up the force and opening different fronts in Cuba. That could be true. It could also be true that the rumors were intended to throw us off the track. Events later showed that they had decided to send the whole force together and seize a point of our territory. Among the rumors in the U.S. press, it was said that it was risky to send all forces against one point and expose them to a crushing defeat and strengthening the revolution. If they had split up their forces in many landings, they could have used it for much propaganda. A defeat in that case would have been diluted. I believe they could have chosen either tactic. We trusted that we would defeat them wherever, they came. For us it would be best if they all came against the same point but we did not think they would do this. They chose something that offered more but also was much more risky for morale and prestige. They should have been worried about the blow to the morale of imperialism and counterrevolution. For us it was better for them to come in one force, but we thought they would avoid that mistake. But we were still ready with adequate force if they all came together. Preparations for Invasion A series of facts showed that the time was near: statements; formation of council of worms in exile; the famous White Book from Kennedy. A whole series of political facts and statements plus the indications in the U.S. press, including discrepancies about possible tactics. We heard that the last shipments of arms and men had gone to Guatemala. We increased our vigilance. On 15 April, because of a report from Oriente, we had not gone to bed. Everything indicated the attack might come at any minute; we got news from Oriente that many groups of ships were off Baracoa. Our forces were put on the alert. It was necessary to be very careful because American ships often came close to the coast trying to cause trouble. One American ship without any flag was very close to the coast. It was detained by our craft. Then U.S. planes came, apparently to provoke an incident, so our vessel was ordered to let the ship proceed to avoid an incident. In connection with the mercenary landing, Americans carried out some ship movements to throw us off the track. The Baracoa battalion was waiting for a landing so there could be no doubt as to what kind of a ship it was. But in the end there was no landing at Baracoa. We still did not know what group of ships that was. It may have been mercenaries who never landed, it may have been U.S. ships; anyway, nothing happened. We heard bombs and ack-ack. We saw it was a bombing raid in Ciudad Libertad. We decided it was definite that the aggression was beginning. We tried to get in touch with San Antonio to get our planes up and found that a simultaneous attack was going on there; and Santiago was attacked too. We had taken measures at the air base. We have few planes and even fewer pilots. We were taking care of those planes. We wanted to be sure they would not be destroyed. So our planes were kept scattered. At San Antonio they managed to destroy one transport plane and one fighter; that was not much. At (Santiago?) they destroyed one fighter and several civilian planes. They had hoped to destroy our air force. Imperialist aggressions are characterized by an attack on aviation to immobilize it. Our force is small, but we expect to make good use of those few planes and pilots. At San Antonio the ack-ack reaction was formidable. Planes were driven off and our planes took off in pursuit of the enemy till he was on way to Miami. The first step of aggression--to destroy our planes on the ground--had failed. We reinforced our ack-ack but they did not come back. They had attacked with six planes. Some did not get back, others were riddled. Our air force was intact and ready. And our pilots wanted revenge. That was Saturday. All forces were alerted. Sunday the funeral services were held, our own planes kept guard. An ammo truck has been set afire by the attack but the people kept calm. They drove the other trucks away while the ammo on the first one was exploding. (Applause) Of course no trucks with ammo should have been there but those things do happen. We were alert all day Sunday. We slept in the afternoon and not at night. We figured that the air raid was not just harrassment but had a military objective, to destroy our air force. Therefore we figured the aggression would come soon. We reinforced our measures after the air attack. Invasion Comes Why was this attack made two days early? Tactically speaking it was an error because we had a chance to take some measures. We mobilized all combat units. On Sunday nothing happened. On Monday morning at 3:15 I was informed that fighting was going on at Playa Giron and Playa Larga. We confirmed this. Then came the report that an invading force was bombing heavily with bazookas and cannons at the two beaches. There was no doubt of a landing attempt at that point--one supported by heavy equipment. Resistance began. Results of the attacks came. The microwave system was cut off. Communications were then cut off. This was the situation. Here is Cochino Bay and here is Cienfugeos. There was a Cienfugeos battalion at the Central Australia. These were the first to meet the aggression. Here is Playa Larga and here Playa Giron. Here is Zapata Peninsula. This piece of impassible swamp land was the sole communication available to peasants. This area bothered the revolution most. (Editor's Note: At this point Castro discusses for approximately six minutes the Zapata swamp area and tells what the revolution has done for it and its people, the building of schools, roads, and medical facilities. He then spends about five minutes giving in some detail a list of the weapons captured in this area, apparently reading from a report. Then during a period of bad reception of approximately 10 minutes, he discusses the invader miscalculations of the Castro air force and, in some detail, the battle plans and the tactical situation during the early stages of the invasion. During much of the time Castro seems to be referring to maps.) That was the plan. They put two battalions here, and five further back; here were four and six, that was very early in the morning. Then planes were to drop paratroops. They began landing very well. But at Playa Larga and Playa Giron they met resistance. They began losing time. They got two battalions ashore. Paratroops began operating. As they dropped paratroops at these spots, our troops were caught between the main force and the paratroops. Our first measures were to alert all commands and the air force. Orders were given to disperse planes and have ack-ack ready if an attack was made on the airstrip. We had planes ready for defense against air attack. The battalion at the Australia central was ordered to Playa Larga to fight. It was an infantry battalion recently formed. At the same time an order given to mobilize Matanzas militia battalion and advance to here. Orders were given to other forces. We had two battalions in Las Villas. The problem first of all was to keep a beachhead here. The main thing was to keep a bit of Playa Larga here, on this side. The Cienfuegos battalion got there before dawn and began fighting. But then came time another group of our forces was fighting at Cayo Ramona. The air force was ordered to take before dawn and attack all ships off Giron and Playa Larga. Our battalion prevented battalion five from getting ashore. Our planes began attacking the ships and doing much damage. Meanwhile our battalion was facing strong fire, and was taken from the rear. It fell back fighting the paratroops. A battalion was sent from Matanzas to reinforce it. Enemy planes were painted with revolutionary armed forces insignia. They attacked our advancing troops. We were most interested in keeping this bit of territory. When we saw paratroops dropped we realized that the attack would come against a single point and any other move would be for diversion. Mobilization of two combat columns of the army was ordered; also of a company of tanks and anti-tank batteries and mortars. Since they controlled the air, the first day our forces had to wait till night to advance. Our planes could not shift from attacking the ships. Our planes continued to attack the ships. They did wonderful work. Besides attacking the ships, they fought with enemy planes. But they kept hammering the ships until not much was left of their fleet. We lost two planes the first morning. Five enemy planes were downed. Four ships were sunk. That was the first day. They had an unexpected surprise. They had thought our air force was knocked out, and so the first day ended. They lost more than half of their ships. Our pilots acted with special courage. What they did was incredible. The militia attacked the Playa Larga position. The battalion had only a narrow road to attack from. On the first day they deployed forces. They were attacking with planes here, and here. We tried to approach the enemy as close as possible under B-26 fire. The battle was accompanied by tanks. So we attacked them all day without respite, fighting constantly. An early morning tank attack came from the same beach with antiair fire support. One of our tanks was damaged. An antitank battery hit us and also another entrenched tank. The goal was to take Playa Larga beach. U.S. Sabre Jets Involved They then began to flee. Here a tank surrendered. At dawn on 19 April the planes bombed the Australia central. On the 19th we had antiaircraft in position. This column, when in movement, was attached by American Sabre planes. They (the invaders--Ed.) had B-26's, not jets. Then, this column of ours, when it advanced between Playa Larga and Playa Giron during the afternoon, suffered many casualties under attack of American Sabres. Those planes were at high altitudes, and on that day when it was already dusk on the 18th, they attacked our column, with Sabres, with jet planes, and they caused many casualties in the column. That was one of the cases in which American planes participated directly. They attacked the column coming from Playa Larga to Giron. At dawn on 19 April a plane attacked the Australia central and was downed and then two more planes. Our planes downed more B-26's. We downed 10 planes during the entire fighting. On the 19th none of their planes returned and we did not see the enemy anymore. List of Casualties On 19 April there were losses, as they were well entrenched. Our people had to fight facing heavy mortar fire and anti-tank guns. There were 87 dead on our side and 250 wounded. That means that our combat units paid a high price in lives while they were on the offensive and that was due to the fact that we were on the offensive constantly until the last position was taken. It is possible that the dead on our side will amount to 100. That indicates the heroism of our troops. They fought constantly without relief against an enemy with relief and more planes than we had. (Castro confers with one of his aides on figures--Ed.) An exact figure cannot yet be given on losses because many of those who came in ships were drowned. According to date here 88. One cannot count those lost in bombing and sunken ships. This will be possible only after identification and a check of personnel lost from each unit. There are some 450 prisoners. We cannot study all data of units and determine how many men were in ships which were sunk. One cannot give an exact figure on that. As I said, one of the basic principles of battle was the courage with which our men fought. It is one thing to defend a position and another to attack without protection under heavy fire. Of course, under such circumstances the losses increase. In the future, we shall be able to have more officers, Battalion chiefs are learning more. The training of units and officers will be better. All kinds of personnel -- mortar, shell, cannon--will be specialized. The fact have shown us the necessity of using our knowledge to defend the revolution. The units have acquired considerable experience. Decorations and Pensions The government plans to create a decoration--to decorate as "Hero of the Revolution" those who were outstanding for valor; and another type of decoration to reward acts of valor in battle. Meanwhile the government will pass a pension law to give a pension to kin of militia and soldiers who fell in this fighting. The least the revolution can do for those who fell is to protect their families who depended on them. This will be done as soon as the cabinet meets. If our troops had had more experience, we could have had fewer casualties. When imperialism found what had happened, it had no army left here. The enemy is still dumbfounded. Counterrevolutionary Suspects Rounded Up The committees for defense of the revolution acted too. There was a needed to arrest anybody who for one reason or another might help the counterrevolution. That kind of measure always entails some injustice, but that is inevitable. The country faced aggression and had to take any measure for defense. Those persons will be released unless there are charges against them other than that they were considered suspect. Those who have counterrevolutionary activity proven against them or are well known will continue to be held. Since yesterday, those arrested as a precaution have started being released. This does not mean that the danger is past. We think the danger is great, especially of direct aggression from the United States. At Mesa, Arizona, Senator Goldwater said he had recommended direct intervention if all else failed. That is the idea of right that this ultra has. What respect for sovereignty of other countries and international law! How calmly they speak of direct military intervention. They respect nothing. And they talk as if it were so easy. They do not learn. They should think of the sorrow military aggression causes--and all to restore privileges here. What need was there to bring this bloodshed to our country? What need to threaten us with intervention? They are so irresponsible that after causing bloodshed here, they threaten with more intervention. The reply is our determination to resist; and if they attack, it will be the end of imperialism. Better to die than live under the yoke of those gentlemen. First Imperialist Defeat in America Glorious death fighting to defeat imperialism deserves a monument. There should be a big monument in Zapata swamps with the names of the fallen on it, to tell the world that on that day Zapata imperialism sustained its first great defeat in America. Precious lives were given in this battle. The militia performed countless feats of prowess. The people defended their land, honor, rights. They have earned the admiration of the world and prestige. They waged a battle for peace. Just think, during these past days the literacy campaign was not halted; the lifestock fair is opening; the Conrado Benitez literacy brigade is about to set forth. This work did not stop in the midst of tension. This shows the stuff the revolution is made of. The comrades who fell saved tens of thousands of lives. Their service to the nation is incalculable. The pilots who fought so steadily and eagerly have created the air force. I am sure no air force ever did before what they have done. We believe 17 April should be made Cuban revolutionary air force day. Mansfield said the Cuban crisis is very grave. The Vermont senator said Cuba is a permanent threat to the hemisphere. If that means they will invade Cuba, nobody here is frightened at all. We will give them a great reception. The might of an empire cannot go as far as the dignity of the people. It will collapse when it runs into the will of the people. Latin American War It is regrettable that U.S. leaders make so many mistakes, such as this one. Why did the U.S. Government need to make itself so ridiculous? It calculated a lot but it calculated badly. In Latin America, there will be war by all who support our revolution. Latin American forces would have a hard time to protect U.S. ambassadors. They should reflect on that. It is too bad they are playing with the idea of attacking us. Such a mistake--nobody knows where it would end. It is too bad the world has to be exposed to the mistakes of those men who know nothing about politics. Kennedy's speeches and his threats are similar to Hitler's. Hitler threatened the small neighboring countries, and Kennedy is threatening Cuba and is saying that he will intervene. He says that his patience is coming to an end. Well, what about our patience, with all the things we have had to endure? In attacking Cuba, they shall unmask themselves more and arouse more revolutionary spirit in Latin America and they will only increase their own future worries. We want them to leave us alone. We want to live in peace with our revolution without losing any more sons. They should stop supplying the counterrevolutionaries with weapons. We will simply have to use a heavy hand. (Applause) The imperialist powers use the method of surprise attacks, the same method of Hitler and Mussolini. We wish they would reconsider things, take a cold or a hot shower, anything. Let humanity, let history, end a system which is outdated now. Imperialism must pass just as feudalism did, just as slavery did. The wars of 1914 and 1940's were bad. Nazism didn't save itself. The forces in the world in favor of peace are great. They know history is with them. They need not fight against history to preserve their system and privileges. It will be a sorry day for the world if those gentlemen are not able to reconsider. This is the question we must consider quietly. Cuba is part of the world today and there can be no discussion with Cuba that do not effect the world. (Applause) We shall keep all the revolutionary forces mobilized and we shall plan for the May Day celebrations and we shall work for the victory of the revolution. We shall prepare ourselves to make the necessary sacrifices. The people have tasted victory. Victory is based upon sacrifices, on the basis of the 87 who died to guarantee the future of the country. They sacrificed themselves for the rest, for the independence and sovereignty of the nation and to obtain a better nation. This joy of today we owe it to those who fell and we hope that the future generations will enjoy their lives for today's sacrifices.
  9. A slightly different view on 'neutral' : Neutrality is also another political position to hold, usually with regards to foreign policy. Perhaps 'equanimity' would be the better word to use? ______________________________________________ I'll choose to do so here. As said, maintaining an equanimous outlook is difficult if not impossible. The value comes from attempting to do so. In the attempt to maintain equanimity one becomes familiar with the reasons one is having difficulty in doing so. This reveals the influences of say natural impulses as well as 'unnatural' ones or those formed by, for example, the media. In learning to 'know oneself', one comes to a knowing of politics. Negative political ideologies depend heavily on a pavlovian pre judice to overcome natural impulses such as empathy. A society of equanimous educated individuals that adopts a neutral stance as far as other societies go does not abandon morality. Quite the contrary. It stands a chance of developing a healthy morality. The neutrality allows it to dialogue with what may otherwise be antagonists. It may thus have a greater eventual impact on world events than if it chooses belligerence. Children, I think, quickly sense go and no-go areas. If their acquired responses leads them to sympathies with what essentially are anti-human politics I suspect that they will sublimate same and this may fester into the kind of problems that will have to be dealt with by societies in the long run anyway. Teaching, in my opinion, should often concentrate, at least early in the pupils career, on learning how to learn. Coming to 'know oneself' through equanimity is a valuable tool. The teachers who demonstrates this, or teaches by example, needs of course to first apply it to their own selves.
  10. I have no desire to start an internecine war in the Carroll Clan (upon all of whom I wish Peace) but with all due respect to Tim Carroll I know of no reason why Beschloss's work should be considered the bible of the JFK assassination. In a murder investigation we look for motive means and opportunity, and above all we look to see where the evidence from the crime scene leads. I think many/most Americans eg. Beschloss would love to say that the evidence leads to Cubans and/or Italians (or furriners of some description), but I suggest that that it is American conceit that prevents us from acknowledging that the real killers were as American (waspish) as apple pie. "The task, at this late date, is not to speculate or theorize but the contrary, to specify, to test, to clarify, to document and, above all, to eliminate suspects. When we obtain the records cited above,--and I believe we will--then we will have a clearer understanding of who was and was not responsible for Kennedy's death." I think that I can understand the argument re. theory. I don't agree. It implies that, as argued the case is basically solved. There is such a thing as civic action. Those who claim a close to 100% certainty could very well make use of that. I'm not suggesting that makes such a claim, but some have. The American investigators psyche is a factor, mostly recognised by non-Americans. Naturally it is an element that would apply equally to say an Australian investigation of some Australian tragedy. It is a great deal more comfortable to externalise the source of evil than to own it. For example if the obvious strife in America in the 50s and 60s around the issue of segregation could be blamed on some external influence such as Cuba, Communism, or even perhaps some identifiable internal identity such as the Mob, as long as it isn't you or I, there would be a tendency when faced with a choice that one would choose to externalise. This is a natural human response. For some researchers such would be the case. The researcher him/her self is a stumbling block. To counteract this one needs to encourage open-mindedness. This means to encourage alternative thinking, speculation. Secondly. Given the nature of the court room and the way Lawyers are allowed to distort reality in order to win cases, any and all theories need to be rigorously defended against all comers. If a theory cannot be defended from an alternative theory that looks at the same data but with a different perspective, then the likely hood of it failing in court is there. Alternative theories provides a useful service. Thirdly. Data is filed in many different formats by many different sources. If I want to find a photograph taken by a member of the Oxford insurrection I might be more likely to find it in some obscure genealogy collection rather than searching in a field of say Federal Crimes. Alternative speculation widens the net. Fourthly. An argument against alternative theories serves to sever these sources and to isolate alternative thinkers from the mainstream when those altertnative thinkers may be just the ones to provide an piece in the mainstream puzzle. There is an essential value to all in alternative theories. Fifthly I believe there is a need to consider mental instability as well. The act of murder of a President while having practical purposes and consequently looking for solution from rational sources makes sense, there are individuals and motives involved that move in the realm of sociopathy and psychopathy. Mentally ill people often speak and write in an alternative language and format. It's entirely possible that essential evidence is overlooked by, as seems to be implied by Jefferson, focusing the investigation on traditional streams. A theory is just that, a theory. There are very few things that a scientist can claim to be Law. This applies equally to history or a murder investigation. If the theory is that the custodians of the documents necessary for the whole of the 40+ year long investigation have also guilty elements then the idea of relying on resources provided by them is silly. By learning to accommodate wild speculation and the resultant alternative sources that may result, throwing the net wider, the likely hood of uncovering necessary data increases. I guess on the whole I reject totally an argument that theorising is counter productive. It belongs in the bin with fatalism.
  11. there is also a sixth possibility (tho I admit it is very negligible as it depends on Cuban people being able to think, and to know which is the business end of a gun, plus the rather strange notion that they (if one assumes they actually are human beings) can differentiate between a brutal regime that hangs poor children from lamp-posts and a group of guerrillas that gets rid of that brutal regime) being the remote possibility that the americans lost because they lost. The converse of that of course being that the Cuban people won. Decisively. And, like the Vietnamese people, would have done so no matter what (short of nuclear annihalation of course.
  12. just returning to top just in case anyone missed it. Fascinating.
  13. Lee, many months ago I spotted this girl skipping about behind the large woman with a long black coat. She's almost impossible to spot in the running film as she jumps about so much. could she be the one you mean?
  14. Lee, I think there is enough white to the sides and when considering the shadows to say that it may be up. However, either way (and please continue to show where this interpretation saying it's up is wrong) what would it mean if it is up or down? Is it important? I can see that for those who believe it the z film is altered it may be, but the alteration hoax doesn't depend on that as far as I understand.
  15. Given the direction this topic has taken, I think I should elaborate slightly on some of the points I made. I deliberately threw in a bunch of definitions, not because they don't apply to me, but to highlight three factors: a.There are many different philosophies to align with, agreeing with a part of one does not exclude others. b.The most significant Law that nature operates under is the law of change. EVERYTHING in the material world is ALWAYS changing. Science attempts to measure reality and describe it. This will ALWAYS be an approximation, though usually a good one that is useful and precise enough in many applications. If you go on to study quantum physics for example you will see this. If you study history you will see this. If you study yourself, you will see this. In my opinion, many of the ills that society and the individuals in it suffer from is as a result of endlessly trying to stop this change and take charge of it. A gross example may be for example architecture. (when I say gross I mean broad or 'large picture' or as opposed to fine or detailed). Some thousands of years from now nothing that's built today will exist in a recognisable form. A few generations from today no-one except a very small minority will be remembered by anyone. A few years from now any attempt at stopping gray hair from appearing will fail. etc etc Here I think some of the writings of Germain Greer are interesting, particularly her thoughts on aging and how much better one experiences it by an attitude of embracing rather than rejecting. and c. perhaps the most important thing of all is education. Why, how, what does that word mean, what is that philosophy... While I speak of responsibility and accountability I mean that to be married with education. Informed responsibility with an awareness of the true nature of self. 'know thyself'. Buddha formulated a number of exercises that everybody can use to gain insight. An informed, educated person who chooses to take responsibility for their actions and the subsequent reactions (cause and effect) I think will gravitate to some form of anarcho - syndicalism. This does not mean non-participation in such things as elections or unions or church, quite the contrary. There is the story of the glass that is to the pessimist half empty and to the optimist it's half full. - to the realist it's neither-it's both. There is no need to have an emotional attachment to it at all. A neutral society will tend to deal with reality in a balanced way avoiding selling principles short for political expediency. An educated aware realistic population with a strong DEFENSE posture in a realistic evaluation of other groupings is the way to go. The idea that ideology is a leftist phenomenon is absurd. The dominant thinking controlling the world today are deliberate produce from think tanks such as the spawns of the John Birch Society.(at the moment their deliberate meddling with the environmental movement, and consequently the green parties, are in need of careful scrutiny) This and other think tanks produce an endless stream of propaganda for lazy politicians to use to justify their policies. Economic Rationalism for example has spread its tentacles very widely. The demands that organisations such as the World Bank place on developing nations are well thought out with specific aims. Left ideology is often a response to these things. It's a cycle of cause and effect. The point I think is to discern which of these cycles are healthy for humanity as a whole and which are only healthy for a few, and consequently, in the fullness of time, unhealthy for all.
  16. Take a good look at the "magazine" on the desk, looks like they've been amused by the lovely legs shown. George no legs on that side I don't think (just ladies), but the word 'Celebrity' seems to be there...
  17. that looks like it might be interesting, Steve. I'll go to the video hire place and pick something up. I like British shows in particular for some reason. Maybe it was growing up with it in Sweden and then in West Oz. But to my mind nothing much can beat some of the last century British stuff. One I really like as well is Red Dwarf, we get patchy series here on ABC, usually late night slots. _____________________________________________ 'aliennation'
  18. Her interview with Texas monthly is very interesting. I would heartily recommend reading it. Here she is in Dorman, with her hood in an unraised position. Couldn't say what happened between then and the Zapruder film. - lee Lee, could you provide a link to that interview, please? I've looked at her in those frames with the gamma ramped up slightly. I don't think it shows her with the hood down at all. I think that her head turn puts her face at times where it makes it look like the side of the hood isn't there.
  19. the FBI showed clearly on whose side they were. In this extract is a outlinf of a program to force Martin Luther King to commit suicide before being able to collect his Nobel Prize. To me, this sort of thing reveals something that is about as low as anyone can go. That such an organisation was allowed to run roughshod over peoples lives and seemingly get away with it condemns the ruling groupings. The idea that these people would balk at assassination doesn't seem so far fetched. ""In an internal FBI monograph dated September 1963 found that, given the scope of support it had attracted over the preceding five years, civil rights agitation represented a clear threat to "the established order" of the U.S., and that Martin Luther "King is growing in stature daily as the leader among leaders of the Negro movement ... so goes Martin Luther King, and also so goes the Negro movement in the United States." This accorded well with COINTELPRO specialist William C. Bradlee refused it, and mentioned the approach to a Newsday colleague, Jay Iselin." ___________________________ "Malcolm X was supposedly murdered by former colleagues in the Nation of Islam (NoI) as a result of the faction-fighting which had led to his splitting away from that movement, and their "natural wrath" at his establishment of a separate mosque, the Muslim Mosque, Inc. However, the NoI factionalism at issue didn't just happen. It had been developed by deliberate Bureau actions, through infiltration and the "sparking of acrimonious debates within the organization," rumor-mongering, and other tactics designed to foster internal disputes. The Chicago Special Agent in Charge, Marlin Johnson, who also oversaw the assassinations of Fred Hampton and Mark Clark, makes it quite obvious that he views the murder of Malcolm X as something of a model for "successful" counterintelligence operations. Over the years considerable thought has been given, and action taken with Bureau approval, relating to methods through which the NOI could be discredited in the eyes of the general black populace or through which factionalism among the leadership could be created. Serious consideration has also been given towards developing ways and means of changing NoI philosophy to one whereby the members could be developed into useful citizens and the organization developed into one emphasizing religion - the brotherhood of mankind - and self improvement. Factional disputes have been developed - most notable being Malcolm X Little."" _________________________________ I put together the following graph based on a number of graphs showing where COINTELPRO were focusing its attention. It clearly shows that, while a major threat to the rights of American citizens were from the shadowy organisations of the right, the FBI did most damage to the organisations on the left, that claimed to be fighting to protect those rights.
  20. A significant figure in the late 50s and early 60s is Malcolm X. His extreme position on Black Nationalism and his assassination was largely overshadowed by JFK, MLK and RFK. Nevertheless, he represented a strong thread in society at the time. The following extract from a FBI COINTELPRO document hints that perhaps he was assassinated directly as a result of FBI ops. http://www.thirdworldtraveler.com/FBI/Poli...unterintel.html "Malcolm X was supposedly murdered by former colleagues in the Nation of Islam (NoI) as a result of the faction-fighting which had led to his splitting away from that movement, and their "natural wrath" at his establishment of a separate mosque, the Muslim Mosque, Inc. 21. Nicely spotted, She was a busy girl, ran all the way along with the Limo. Perhaps the very point at which she stopped following is very important. EDIT:: she pauses very briefly at z154, then stops at z181, and takes one step forward at z194 and stops.
  22. bearing in mind the backyard photographs of 'oswald' holding a copy of 'the militant' and a copy of 'the worker'. A number of points (without necessarily tying them together, but logging them for consideration) #'Oswald' holds a copy of the militant and a copy of the worker, first in his right hand, secondly to his chest thirdly to his left. This shows both sides of the papers. #The copies are 'pristine' indicated they may have been purchased precicely for the purpose of the photographs (whatever that may be) and not just for reading. There is a sheet of paper on the ground. (in exactly the same location, following exactly the same contours on the ground, indicating (apart from the progressive shadows on the post) that the photos were all taken at the same 'sitting'. This sheet of paper may have been used for wrapping the news papers, indicating secrecy. #In april 1962, the FBI in its disruptive COINTELPRO- CPUSA and SWP op. noted that a issue of Worker carried an advertisement referring to a SWP office as the source of tickets to an upcoming event. Seeking to utilise this as a way to disrupt they anonymously contacted both organisation expressing outrage at the apparent association. #An interesting point to note here is that the SWP indicated solidarity as they were aware of troubles the CP were having at this point and did not wish to 'put the knife into them'. The wording of the SWP response to the anonymous phone call indicated that perhaps they were wise to this attempt at fragmenting the left. To me the interesting aspect here is a consideration of how the backyard photos fit in. While the Communists and the Trotskyists traditionally are enemies, this does not mean they cannot form a bipartisanship approach on important issues. At this time the Cuban 'problem' presented one such issue (Civil Rights another). Perhaps the surfacing of the backyard photos tied in with a COINTELPRO op. to disrupt this bipartisanship by associating a 'union' between the CPUSA and the SWP with Oswald and hence with pro-Castro forces, and thus the assassination.?
  23. Those who aren't already aware of some of the things the FBI got up to may be intertested to read the highlighted portion: COINTELPRO-SWP "Socialist Workers Party Split The SWP has been outspokenly critical of the Communist Party, USA (CPUSA) and has referred to members of the CPUSA as Stalinists. The recent downgrading of Stalin by Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev has given the SWP a psychological propaganda weapon to use against members of the CPUSA. The SWP, an organization of approximately 500 members, has instituted an ambitious program of trying to recruit leaders and active members of the CPUSA into the SWP by capitalizing on the confusion existing inside the CPUSA brought about to no small degree by the downgrading of Stalin. The current SWP program includes sending of the SWP publication "The Militant" and other SWP literature to members of the CPUSA, inviting them to SWP social gatherings and finally attempt to sell them on the SWP program. It is believed the following suggestions are feasible in most of the 15 offices and they are being furnished these offices for consideration in an attached letter. (1) Furnish names and addresses of CP leaders through selected SWP informants to SWP branch leaders where possible without jeopardy. (2) Through SWP informants, call attention to articles in the press or congressional committees which identify local communist leadsers and members. (3) Furnish names and addresses of CP leaders and member to SWP branch leaders by anonymous letters, pretext telephone calls or by slipping the names under the door of SWP headquarters. (4) Furnish the locations of future CP meetings to SWP leaders so that SWP members can pass out SWP literature to CP members attending. (5) Discreetly subscribe to "The Militant" for three-month period for special rate at fifty cents in name of several top CP leaders. (6) Suggest through SWP informants that SWP capitalize on anti-Semitic crimes in the Soviet Union. The current SWP program aimed at winning recruits from the CPUSA is made to order for the Bureau in increasing disruption inside the CPUSA. It is felt that with careful planning we can capitalize on this situation without jeopardy to any SWP informant or without embarrassment to the Bureau. A.H. Belmont to L.V. Boardman, Oct. 10, 1956 You should make certain that [ ] not obtain the impression that the Bureau has any over-all program in this connection. The informant should feel that [ ] participation is a local situation developed between [ ] and the Agent supervising [ ] operations. Director, FBI to SAC, New York, Nov. 6, 1956 "
