  1. I forgot to mention these quotes from Officer B.W. Hargis' interviews with the HSCA: On November 16, 1977: "The second shot hit JFK in the head. The presidential car had slowed almost to a stop"; On August 8, 1978: "When the second shot was fired - no doubt gunfire this time as it hit the President's head - the limousine slowed so much it practically stopped..."; On December 29, 1978: "... the limousine slowed and nearly stopped ..." The limo nearly, almost, practically - but never actually - stopped.... Chris
  2. Robin: You beat me to it. An ISP connectivity problem prevented me posting this a few days ago: - DPD Officer Earle Brown, on the railway overpass above Stemmons, told Earl Golz in March 1980 that he saw the limo and 4 other cars stop on the Stemmons on-ramp for at least 30 secs. Brown later repeated his story for Gary Mack; - Officer Doug Jackson told Mack in 1981 that he and Chaney raced after lead car, caught up with it after about 30 secs, and Chaney spoke through window to Curry; - Curry told another researcher (whose name I cannot recall at this moment) in 1979 that Chaney caught up with him as they began climbing the Stemmons on-ramp; - Curry told Mack that he slowed down in order to find out if anyone had been hit, as he was unaware that anyone had been hit until Chaney told him. He also said he then had to tell the limousine driver, Secret Service agent Bill Greer, how to get to Parkland Hospital, before issuing “Go to hospital” order; - Curry told the Warren Commission that he did not transmit on Channel 2 until after he spoke to Motorcycle Officer Jim Chaney; - DPD Officer Courson said lead car had slowed sufficiently for him to catch it on the Stemmons access road, and Courson was 100-120 feet behind McLain in the motorcade, and McLain was himself about 140 feet behind the Presidential limo when the shots were fired. (Courson was appprox. 80 yds behind JFK at Z-313); - Chaney is in the extreme left edge of the Daniel film (in the inter-sprocket images, I believe) , and in the Mel McIntire photo - in both cases, he hasn't yet caught up with Curry; It is therefore highly unlikely/improbable that his conversation with Curry was excised from the Zapruder film. Chris
  3. John, I'd like to know what happened to the "new study" that Jeff Morley talks about in the March 2005 issue of Readers Digest? Do you know? BK Bill, The original belt covering the time of the shooting, Belt #10, is in a very poor physical condition. Carl Haber's work at Berkeley will just provide NARA with the best possible copy of the dictabelt for access/study purposes - he is not trying to to do anything else. As for the current status of the study, the latest news I have is that he is ready to proceed, but NARA still must do the procurement paperwork to authorize funds to complete the work. My information is that they are optimistic that a contract will be in place in the near future. Chris.
  4. Bill: Unfortunately, Judy Bonner (born August 20, 1931) died on December 5, 1984. As to your other questions - Was the Dix/Bonner tape better than the BBN tape? Well, the Dix/Bonner tape has noises (a radio and a typewriter) audible in the background, but it was made in the late 1960's, while the BBN tape was made from the original dictabelt, although the belt was badly worn in 1978 when BBN made their copy. However, on the basis that the BBN tape was made from the actual dictabelt, while we don't know how far removed from the original belts the Dix/Bonner tape was (probably 4 or 5 generations removed, at best) , the BBN copy - with its known provenance - would have to get my vote. As for the HSCA scientists, none of them now want to discuss the acoustics evidence, although Dr. Barger was very helpful in the past. That suggests that they might not be as confident of their findings as they might have been in the past. That said, however, I think the impulses must have been caused by something, and I'd still like to know what it was, and how and why it matched the test firings, if is isn't gunfire. Thoughts? Regards, Chris.
  5. Stephen: According to information which researcher Denis Morissette uncovered in the latter part of 2004, an individual associated with Lava Productions “got the tape from a police officer who wanted to publish a book on the JFK assassination” . Why the tape was dated “December 1963”, and how it found its way into the Minneapolis Public Library system, remains a mystery, but the Lava Productions tape copy may well be from the same source as the copy of the DPD recordings which surfaced sometime prior to early 1967. At that time, a recording of the DPD Channel 1 and Channel 2 radio transmissions was given to author Judy Bonner who was writing her book "Investigation Of A Homicide", apparently in association with DPD Sergeant Gerald Hill, himself a former news reporter. My own research into the chain of possession of the dictabelts and the copies made from them points very much to the fact that the Judy Bonner and the Dave Dix tape recordings came from the same source. 6. Wim: "We respectfully disagree". . . Thank you - the word "respectfully" wasn't that hard to use after all, was it? That was all that was ever needed. Whether you or I agree with everything or anything Gary Mack says is irrelevant. I'm sure he doesn't agree with everything we say, either. My point was (and remains) that name-calling and attacks on his - or anyone else's - character are totally unnecessary, and do nothing to further the search for truth. Respectfully, Chris Scally
  7. Mr. Dankbaar: Gary Mack doesn't need my "personal sympathy" - but he is entitled to be treated with a level of respect due to any human being. As I also accord you such respect, I respectfully disagree with you about the "vitriolic personal abuse". That is my opinion, to which I am also entitled - or are you suggested that it is your way, or no way? Chris Scally.
  8. Seems like we've been down this road before. http://educationforum.ipbhost.com/index.ph...st&p=138574 Again, I would call on John and/or those moderators in a position to do so, to put an end to the vitriolic personal abuse which is being thrown about on this forum. There is no place on a research forum for this stuff. I have said before, and I say again, Gary Mack has been extremely helpful to me (and, it seems, many others) over the years, and is inevitably my first 'port of call' whenever I have a query about photographs, acoustics, etc. Whether one agrees with him or not (and differences of opinion are surely the life-blood of research), he has earned a level of respect that some of his detractors will never earn in their lifetimes. Chris Scally.
  9. Thank you. Don't know if this will aid in your research, but there was also a Secret Service copy. I had remembered that during some other research, I ran across the fact that Dallas SA Roger C. Warner was also involved in transcribing the tapes. CD 87, p. 339 is a 12/1/63 report from Warner and SA Elmer Moore relating that Deputy Chief Lumpkin had provided the actual tapes of both channels to Warner and Moore on November 29, 1963. "Both channels were recorded by SA Warner and sent to Washington Protective Research Section for filtering, re-recording and transcription. Copies will be returned to this office and will be attached to this report when received." http://www.maryferrell.org/mffweb/archive/...bsPageId=335970 Steve Thomas Guys: A bit of updated information on the Secret Service transcript. The SS transcript is located in Box 14, Folder 4, Item 11 of the DPD Records, and consists of an 82-page transcript by an "unknown author", dated "11/22/63" (sic), with an explanatory note, "copy sent to the Secret Service". In May of this year, I received a full hardcopy of the transcript from Paul McCaghren of the DPD, and it is 84 pages long, pages 69 and 70 being the two missing from the one in the DPD records. Pages 1 to 74 are Channel 2, from just before 10:15 am to 2 pm. From page 74 to the end is a Channel 1 transcript, starting at 12:27 and ending at 1:55 pm. This is the worst transcript of the lot. To me, it appears to have been written by someone who was totally unfamiliar with Dallas itself, andd with DPD radio parlance. The transcript does not record the speaker, and is full of errors, ranging from place names to numerous "unreadable" passages. As an example of what it is like, the Kimbrough transcript, and the extant recordings, show the following exchange at 12:54 - Disp: You are in the Oak Cliff area, are you not? 78: Lancaster and Eighth. Disp: You will be at large for any emergency that comes in. 78: 10-4. The same passage in the Secret Service transcript reads (p. 54) You are in the Northwest area are you not? Unreadable. You will be at large if any emergency comes in. 10-4. Ironically, Paul McCaghren told me that this transcript was created by Jim Bowles in late 1963, rather than the Secret Service, as CD87 indicates. However, I cannot believe that Bowles could or would be so inaccurate in describing place names, etc. Hope this adds something to the discussion. Chris
  10. Don: A few questions come to mind immediately - 1. "The dictabelt recording was edited at some point, to include the sounds of a moving mototcycle."? What, if any, evidence exists to support this claim? I have been studying and documenting the history and chain-of-possession of those belts over a long period of time, and to the best of my knowledge, there is no evidence whatsoever of any such alteration to the original dictabelts. 2. A radio broadcast saying "Alright Jack", followed by shots, followed by a broadcast saying "Sorry Jack"? I don't think so...... Chris
  11. Duke: My piece on the chain-of-possession of the DPD radio recordings [ http://mcadams.posc.mu.edu/scally.htm ] contains records of what official transcripts were produced, and when. There were other copies of those transcripts in circulation, but they all seem to have originated from the "official" ones. I'm working on a fairly major update to the "Chain of Possession", which will have extra details in it - if you need more than what is in the published version of my article, please let me know. Chris.
  12. Didn't Jeff Morley do an article on this subject for Reader's Digest a few years ago? Where can you get updates on this? Thanks, BK Bill: Yes, Jeff Morley did write an article in Reader's Digest in May 2005 - "The JFK Murder: Can New Technology finally Crack The Case?". There have been no official "updates" as such on the story, as it is still very much a work-in-progress. The situation is as I outlined in an earlier posting, and was "current" as of about 6-8 weeks ago, if my memory serves me correctly. Chris Scally.
  13. Duke: Carl Haber at Berkeley has recently received the necessary grant funding to continue with the project. They have only tried so far to carry out a test scan on a non-DPD dictabelt. In its present configuration, the probe equipment needs some additional software to handle the belts properly, and the software was due to be produced, I believe, during the summer months. At present, I understand that NARA are waiting until Haber and his people perfect a working proto-type that handles belts correctly, and then they will finally decide what to do about belt #10. Chris Scally
  14. Duke: I don't think they are listed specifically, but a check of the 1970 Mary Ferrell/Arch Kimbrough transcripts indicates the following were the first to respond to the Signal 19 call to the Tippit shooting in Oak Cliff, between the time of the shooting and 1:34 pm - 69 - Ptlm. A.R. Brock 211 - Ptlm. R. Hawkins 85 - Ptlm. R.W. Walker 105 - Ptlm. J.M. Poe and L.E. Jez 19 - Sgt Owens 91 - Ptlm W.D. Mentzel 279 - Ptlm. J.R. Mackey (or J.T. Griffin) 550 Car 2 - Sgt. Hill 111 - Ptlm. J.G. Pollard 244 - Ptlm. L.D. Wilson 79 - Ptlm. B. Anglin 412 - CID 76 - Ptlm. H. Horn 16 - Sgt. Shipley 77 - Ptlm W.E. Smith 93 Ptlm. H.M. Ashcroft 95 - Ptlm. M.N. McDonald and T.R. Gregory 221 - Ptlm. H.W. Summers 223 - Ptlm C.T. Walker 87 - Ptlm. R.C. Nelson 66 - Ptlm. F. S. Williams Is this what you are looking for? I could go through the transcripts for the respondees to the Dealey Plaza shooting as well, if you wish, although it may take a few days. Chris Scally.
  15. I seem to recall reading somewhere that what appears to be a "mugshot" attached to the clipboard was, in fact, a metal clip which somehow attached the clipboard to the dashboard or Tippit's car. Can anyone else recall this - I know it has been discussed somewhere before, but I cannot remembe where. Chris Scally I knew I'd seen it somewhere - the mind hasn't gone totally, yet.... According to Dale Myers' Tippit Page [http://www.jdtippit.com/html/intro_faq.htm], the clipboard on Tippit's dashboard normally "held a spiral notebook which officers could use to write notes on." According to Myers, "An enlargement of the crime photo referred to by the Commission, however, reveals that the "photograph of a man" is actually the spring, metal clip clutching Tippit's open spiral notebook." 17. JWK: Well put. Your comments apply to a few recent threads here. Hopefully, common sense will prevail, and we can all get back to the JFK assassination, instead of character assassination. Chris Scally
  18. Hi, all: I can no longer contain my anger and disappointment at the constant stream of vitriolic abuse that is directed at Gary Mack (and others, like Josiah Thompson, to a lesser extent) on this Forum. I am proud to say that I've known and corresponded with Gary Mack for over 20 years, and I have never found him to be anything other that helpful, courteous, and generous. To read the abuse that is being hurled at him on a daily basis is nothing short of sickening, particularly when he cannot publicly respond for work reasons. No two human beings agree on everything, all the time. If we did, this would be a very boring world. However, to indulge in the sort of personal abuse that has become the norm on this Forum will resolve no differences. To John and the Moderators - can you do nothing to put a stop to this? To Gary, and all the others who have given so much to research - my sincere thanks. And, to those who are engaged in this abuse - GIVE IT UP....! Chris Scally.
  19. Apologies for the "empty" post earlier.... Thanks to everyone who replied, and especially James for all the information. Chris.
  20. Hi, all: Does anyone have any current information regarding Judy Bonner, author of the book, "Investigation of A Homicide" (Anderson, SC; Droke House, 1969). Is Ms. Bonner still alive, and if so, does anyone know how / if she is contactable? I believe that, sometime after she wrote her book, she worked in London for one of the major UK daily newspapers, but I don't know anything beyond that. Any information would be appreciated. Many thanks, Chris.
  21. Born in Dublin, Ireland in 1950. I worked for 30 years in technology within the banking industry, both in Britain and Ireland. During my banking career, I lectured widely on the subject of computer virus risks, which was my area of speciality and responsibility for a number of years. Since taking early retirement in 2003, I have devoted considerable time to a detailed study of the acoustics evidence in the Kenndy assassination. My article on the dictabelts' chain of possession (http://mcadams.posc.mu.edu/scally.htm) has been well received by the research community, and an article on the "open microphone" mystery was published in the UK research group's publication, The Dealey Plaza Echo, in March 2004.
