Bill, we have a couple of presentations of new material on Rose at the 2003

November in Dallas conference. Jim Olivier presented on two new

witnesses including another La. police officer that had been involved with

her arrests and who Fruge talked to in regard to this incident as well as a

police secretary who was familiar with the November arrest and had also done

some interview work in Clinton on the Oswald appearance there.

Bob Dorff presented information including his interview with one of the

Doctors who worked at the hospital and this clarified who was on duty and who

had talked with her.

I've just been reading a new Customs document on the trip Fruge made down

with her to intercept the drug smuggling courier on the ship and she

certainly did have the correct information about the ship and the crewman.

It's very unclear why they decided to drop the whole thing but the excuse

given was that because of her past history they did not consider her a viable

informant although in this particular instance three different sources are cited

as saying her preliminary information all checked out.

Certainly everything in the new information presented seems to corroborate

the basic story in terms of whatever rumor or gossip she had heard....unfortunately none of it can take us much further given that the matter was simply not pursued prior to her death.

Thanks, Larry.

We know that Rose's 2 travelling companions have been identified as Emilio Santana and Sergio Acarcha Smith but do you know if any link (apart from this incident) between these guys has ever been unearthed?

I am far from a full bottle on this aspect and these individuals but it just seems that Smith and Santana seem like a very odd couple.

I'll try to reply to both Bill and James with this post.

Bill, the sessions on Rose would be available in the Lancer video

tapes of last years conference which may be found via

www.jfklancer.com

James, yes those are the ID's made by Garrison's investigators but I have

seen a memo from him that expresses his concern that his investigators may

have been pushing too hard for the ID's. There is nothing to connect the

two men at all although there is a rough connection between Santana and some of the other pre-assassination gossip, primarily because he had indeed served as a JMWAVE boat guide and taken in at least one mission in 1963 - he also seems to have had some connections to some smugglers or other criminals of some sort during that time frame and as I recall he did have an arrest record.

Other than that about the only thing you can say is that Arcacha Smith had been in Florida, Tampa area in early 63 and moved back to Texas taking a job

in Houston and then doing some business in Dallas I think. However his boss was interviewed and accounted for his presence during the time of the incident with Rose....if that can be trusted.

All in all it seems to me very possible that Rose heard some of the general gossip that was very prevalent in Florida, Chicago and even in Dallas - byond that it seems hard to take it anywhere concrete. Certainly there were a number of folks making remarks about a general threat against JFK in November.

Thanks, Larry.

I knew Santana had mixed with the JM/WAVE crowd and that there were some unconfirmed reports of he and his brother spending some time at the various Florida Keys training camps. Smith on the other hand just didn't seem to fit.

I had always felt that the Cheramie story was open to interpretation due to the identifications of these 2 individuals.

Of course that doesn't mean that Santana is out of the equation. However, Smith being present is dubious to say the least. IMO.

Hi Larry,

do you have the name of the ship and the crewman?

Of further interest is that Rose Cheramie was brought from Carity Hospital, Lafayette to Eastern Louisiana State Hospital, Jackson. This was a mental hospital, the same hospital where Ochsner did his cancer experiments on live patients, which was the reason that Oswald, Ferrie and Clay Shaw were seen in nearby Clinton to await the convoy of prisoners who were unwitting "volunteers" for these experiments. It is also the hospital where Oswald so called "apllied" for a job.

Greg, Rose gave the ships name phonetically as "Mary Etta", the ship

found to match the port and time was the SS Maturata, British registry

docking in Galveston.

The seaman's name was given as "Luther", initials L.J. last name unknown.

Delivery was to be made to Leo Parker (alias), true name Poreurillo (the

spelling is hard to read on this, poor type quality or altered, hard to say

on my copy). Parker was to take delivery in Dallas. Other names

given were Pete Vallone and the Tamborrello family. Police records were

checked and confirmed that the Vallone and Tamborello families

were heavily invovled in narcotics, white slavery and other criminal activity.

Given the number of details which appeared to check out it is rather significant that the investigation was dropped simply because Rose had a record with the Houston police and they apparently told the agents that her allegations were untrue. Which is very strange given her actual record which clearly demonstrates that she had been very active as both a prostitute (white slavery) and a drug courier and there is no detail given as to how they could have checked her

story prior to the arrival of the ship?

Fruge himself said that he and the agents did verify a Luther on the ship but failed

to intercept him and were ordered back given the decision by higher level

customs officers to drop it based - it seems - simply on a lack of interest by Houston police.

great information. I had been wondering for a while if maybe the ship was a Lykes Line operation. Some interesting connections there if it had been...

but it isn't.

Any veteran JFK Researcher worth his salt is no doubt aware that a big part of the controversy and enmity that exists between the persons believing there was a conspiracy, and the beloved Lone-Nutters. On the alt.conspiracy.jfk newsgroup, as well as on the internet, Rose Cheramie is always right in the middle of allegations and counter-arguments that her information indicating foreknowledge was either invented after the fact, or, was actually before the assassination, as Fruge indicated.

Irrespective of whether or not that is the truth, [and there is actually good reason to believe that it was before the assassination], there is a significant point that needs to be addressed regarding Cheramie.

Rose Cheramie aka Melba Mercades, she actually had a multitude of aliases, is, in retrospect beyond simply "important."

Why?

Two reasons.

One. if she was and is as insignificant as, certain idiots maintain, why are there at least four documents on her that are postponed in full? See bottom of post

Two. Read the article in Probe Magazine by Jim DiEugenio

Rose Cheramie: How She Predicted The JFK Assassination

Postscript:

The Assassinations: Probe Magazine on JFK, MLK, RFK, and Malcolm X pg 230, by DiEugenio, James and Pease, Lisa, editors (2003)

Amazon Rating:

It should be noted that at this point there exists some confusion about Mac Manuals identification of Santana. Writers like John Davis have said that the man's last name was `Osanto'. This is based on Patricia Orr's summary of the Cheramie episode in Volume 10 of the HSCA volumes. Apparently Orr was working only from Fruge’s April 18, 1978 deposition transcript. There Fruge states that ther second man was, to the best of his memory, Osanto. But this confusion is now cleared up with the declassification by the ARRB of the rest of the HSCA records. For in the summary of Fruge’s deposition, and in the accompanying index, Blackmer notes that Fruge identified the actual photos that Manual picked out. The photos were of Sergio Aracha Smith and Emilio Santana.

In 2006 on a JFK newsgroup, I am told there was a "Jaxie Stewart Fisher," who claimed that her relationship to Rose Cheramie, was intimate enough that she was known to her as "Aunt Pippy."

Thanks Robert.

This document hasn't been reviewed for 15 years. Not entirely sure, but I believe a request for such documents triggers a new review.

I agree that Joan could help tremendously, but I know her prior her experiences on forums left her somewhat disinclined to continue participating.

Thanks Robert.

This document hasn't been reviewed for 15 years. Not entirely sure, but I believe a request for such documents triggers a new review.

I agree that Joan could help tremendously, but I know her prior her experiences on forums left her somewhat disinclined to continue participating.

In her Pittsburgh talk during the Wecht Conference, she made reference to Julio Fernandez, the Cuban newspaper editor who was living in Martinsberg, Pa., whose neighbor discovered items he was burning in his trash that contained the names Ruby and Lee Oswald.

It also contained the name Silver Sliper, the name of the bar where Sergio Aracha Smith and Rose Cheramie were enroute to or leaving when she was dumped from the car.

I always thought that represented a good lead that was never realy followed up on.

Boy, ya gotta love that you can read the same message four or five times, one right after the next, and multiple copies of each reply, too, just on the off chance that you might forget something that was in the original.
