Hopefully, the format will work properly here. Unfortunately, I will not be able to annotate all of these links as I originally planned to do---because, frankly, the volume of text required will exceed the space limitations which I have using Google Sites for my webpages. However, let me explain what I have attempted to accomplish. 1. When I first created my Archives webpage, it was intended to be a quick-reference to some of the (potentially) most productive locations for research into right-wing history -- and, particularly, with respect to extreme right individuals and organizations. 2. I have expanded my original listings to include a lot more material -- and (as you will notice) I have added some entirely new categories (such as links to YouTube videos). 3. You will notice duplicate links for some records archived at the same location. I did this because there are sometimes archive listings created by two different sources that provide different information. For example: one listing might be just a basic generic description without any details whereas the second listing might include a link to a pdf file which is a detailed finding aid OR the second link might just provide additional descriptive information. 4. My listings now include all of the following categories: 4.1 = Personal Papers of conservative or extreme right individuals who acquired a significant amount of right-wing publications and/or who corresponded with many prominent conservative or extreme right persons and organizations and saved all their correspondence. 4.2 = Conservative Organizations or Publications or TV/radio programs that donated their records to some institution 4.3 = Research Files by scholars and organizations and authors who studied and wrote about the conservative and extreme right movements in our country. 4.4 = Videos of speeches made by right-wing personalities OR listings of radio/TV interview programs hosted by right-wing personalities (such as Joe Pyne or William F. Buckley Jr.) 4.5 = Personal Papers of politicians and public figures who have been subjected to attacks by the right-wing IF you have any suggestions for additions -- please let me know. Thanks! "Hoover's FBI" consisted of tens of thousands of individual human beings and it is gravely mistaken to believe that they all thought alike or behaved in the same manner. There are hundreds of examples where "Hoover's FBI" exonerated left-wing individuals and organizations from accusations of "subversion" or violations of federal law. There are hundreds of examples where "Hoover's FBI" recognized (at least internally) the stupidity and dishonesty of right-wing actors in the public arena. I know it is fashionable (particularly here in EF) to portray Hoover and the institution he headed as a cartoon villain but anybody who studies Hoover or the FBI knows that the actual reality is much more complex. The persons and organizations "targeted" by the FBI may have come under scrutiny but let's remember that a minuscule number of them ever faced any sort of prosecution because the FBI's intelligence-gathering operations were not intended to put people in jail; they were created to discover information -- and, very often, those intelligence-gathering operations were triggered by some outside inquiry or some kind of incoming data -- but not from something initiated by the FBI itself. For example: consider the FBI's interest in the Birch Society. There was a very brief "preliminary inquiry" in 1959 (not an actual FBI investigation). That preliminary inquiry took about 8-10 weeks to complete. After that time, the FBI was passive and only responded to incoming inquiries or complaints about the JBS which came about because of the controversies which the JBS produced by its own statements and activities. Nevertheless, the FBI HQ main file on the JBS includes thousands of serials which covers a period of almost 30 years. My parents were cpusa in the early 1950's. Their best friend in the party turned out to be FBI. Did Hoover's institution similarly infiltrate the JBS? Or the Minutemen? Can you point to any American communists who you would have considered dangerous? Do you think American communists had anything to do with any assassinations in the U.S. during our lifetimes? The cpusa was so concerned with civil rights that they kicked my father out of the party for not taking the side of a black man who robbed an Italian grocer in Halem NY. To hear my parents talk about their membership, it was all about idealism, wanting a more egalitarian society. Whatever shenanigans the Stalinists were up to, the average member was like my parents - wanting a better more fair society. You would not dispute that Hoover was a racist would you? He targeted MLK mercilessly. He famously tried to paint MLK as under communist influence because of some of his associates. Can you not see those associates as, like my parents, idealists looking to create a more just society? Was MLK targeted really because of Commies in his camp? Come on. My mother was brought to DC as a member of Women's Strike For Peace and brought before Congress to explain herself to HUAC. Why? Because she had formerly been a member of Cpusa, and HUAC wanted to smear that good idealistic organization with a communist brush, as they did MLK. Really now, just who were they trying to kid? This thread is largely between you and Trejo. He argues that a right wing cabal killed JFK. He is at least in part right. It certainly wasn't leftists that killed JFK. The dispute I have with Trejo is about definitions, and private vs public rightists. But there is no dispute about the right wing origins of the plot. It never ceases to amaze me when people try to parse the right, claiming the national security state military industrial complex was somehow not right wing. Well, Paul, there is a lot to respond to in your message and it would take considerable space to respond to everything you present. Briefly, let me make these observations. 1. No--the FBI did not "infiltrate" the Birch Society. It did, however, use what the Bureau described as "established sources" to discover information about the Birch Society AND headquarters instructed all of it field offices to keep HQ apprised of JBS activities and developments in their territories. So, for example many local contacts of the FBI (friendly media, retired FBI Agents, prominent businesspeople, etc.) were invited to attend a JBS recruitment meeting and afterward they gave their local FBI office a summary of what transpired. In addition, military intelligence agencies also received reports about JBS activities which they forwarded to their local FBI office. 2. Yes--the FBI had several moles inside the Minutemen---which is how they got MM membership lists and other information. 3. Why was FBI interest in the CPUSA different from their interest in the JBS? The FBI standard for an active investigation was based upon several criteria which had to be met. In general, an investigation was only appropriate when there were “individuals or organizations concerning whom there is some clear indication of advocating, condoning or inciting violence for the purpose of denying others their constitutional rights." The difference between JBS and CPUSA is that the JBS never published a single word which advocated, condoned, or incited violence or which discussed the desirability of overthrowing our government through force, violence, or revolution. Even more importantly, when the FBI conducted its preliminary inquiry into the JBS (in 1959) it was able to quickly determine the caliber of the people whom were joining or endorsing the JBS. It became self-evident that the JBS was NOT attracting any subversive or criminal element and, instead, was obtaining support from extremely prominent and respected members of communities around our country including (but not limited to) U.S. Congressmen, Governors, Hollywood personalities, law enforcement officials and Constitutional scholars (including retired FBI Agents and the former Chief Justice of the Arizona Supreme Court and the former Dean of the Law School at Notre Dame University), publishers of major American newspapers, well-known clergymen, very wealthy and well-known conservative business-people connected to large and respected U.S. corporations, former Cabinet officials in the Eisenhower Administration, AND retired senior military officers whom, during their service, had been investigated by the FBI and obtained security clearances. 4. American Communists Who Were Dangerous? I suggest that you read the minutes of closed, secret meetings of the CPUSA National Executive Committee and then make a determination if you think anybody might be dangerous. 5. CPUSA and Civil Rights Have you ever read the stories of African Americans who joined the CPUSA but later decided to leave the Party? If you have any real knowledge of their journey -- then you will quickly discover a common denominator, i.e. they all became disillusioned because they discovered the same kind of racism inside the CPUSA as existed in U.S. society generally AND they believed that the CPUSA was just using black Americans for ulterior motives---to provide aid, comfort, and support for the Soviet Union -- not because of any genuine interest in African Americans. A similar story can be told with respect to Jews who joined the CPUSA. This should not be surprising however because one of the most anti-semitic texts ever written was Karl Marx's "On The Jewish Question" in which he wrote about themes that could have been lifted out of any neo-nazi text today---one Marx excerpt below: "What is the worldly religion of the Jew? Huckstering. What is his worldly God? Money.…. Money is the jealous god of Israel, in face of which no other god may exist. Money degrades all the gods of man – and turns them into commodities…. The bill of exchange is the real god of the Jew. His god is only an illusory bill of exchange…. The chimerical nationality of the Jew is the nationality of the merchant, of the man of money in general." Marx's beliefs were quite similar to Christian fundamentalist anti-semites who believe that in the final analysis Judaism needs to be eliminated as a separate ethnic or cultural identity, i.e. progress occurs only when Jews no longer exist. 6. Hoover a Racist? I think any fair discussion about Hoover candidly recognizes that he is a product of the time, place, and environment in which he grew up and by most definitions used today, he probably would accurately be described as racist -- BUT -- here again we get into the complexity of not conflating a person's innermost thoughts and values with the institution he manages. It would be beyond stupid to claim that the FBI, as an institution, was racist. Again, the Bureau was comprised of literally tens of thousands of human beings -- and if you review the personnel files of dozens of FBI Agents (and senior FBI officials) as I have done -- then you will instantly recognize that most of these folks were decent, honorable, moral people. Some FBI Agents who were Jewish subsequently were employed by Jewish organizations (such as ADL and American Jewish Committee) and they became famous for their work in defending and advancing civil rights and civil liberties while fighting right-wing extremists. As I have pointed out several times previously in this forum, EVEN IF you think Hoover was racist --- you still must recognize that FBI investigations and FBI speakers (including Hoover) eviscerated arguments presented by right-wing extremists and racists and anti-semites. It was (racist?) Hoover (as I have previously noted) who declared in 1964 (in a public speech) as well as in numerous replies to letters sent to him that: "Let me emphasize that the American civil rights movement is not, and has never been, dominated by the communists—because the overwhelming majority of civil rights leaders in this country, both Negro and white, have recognized and rejected communism as a menace to the freedoms of all.” [J. Edgar Hoover speech, 12/12/64, Our Heritage of Greatness, pg 7 - Hoover speech before Pennsylvania Society and the Society of Pennsylvania Women; bold emphasis in original document on “not” and “never”] In November 1966, Hoover received an inquiry from a self-identified JBS member who saw the above quote in a letter-to-the-editor of his local newspaper and he wanted to know if the quote was an accurate reflection of Hoover’s judgment both in 1964 and 1966. Hoover replied affirmatively and concluded: “This position remains essentially unchanged today.” [HQ file 62-104401, serial #3021, 11/15/66 Hoover reply to incoming Bircher inquiry] In 1965, J. Edgar Hoover described the civil rights movement as "a great and too long neglected cause of human rights" in our country. [FBI Law Enforcement Bulletin, Introduction, April 1965]. This FBI publication was sent to thousands of law enforcement officials around the country and helped form THEIR judgments about the civil rights movement. Also see following Hoover comments : “It would be absurd to suggest that the aspirations of Negroes for equality are communist inspired. This is demonstrably not true…” [J. Edgar Hoover speech, Faith In Freedom, 12/4/63, page 6]. “It is no secret that one of the bitterest disappointments to communistic efforts in this Nation has been their failure to lure our Negro citizens into the party. Despite every type of propaganda boomed at our Nation’s Negro citizens, they have never succumbed to the party’s saccharine promises of a Communist ‘Utopia’. This generation and generations to come for many years owe a tremendous debt to our Negro citizens who have consistently refused to surrender their freedoms for the tyranny of communism.” J. Edgar Hoover testimony before U.S. Senate Internal Security Subcommittee, 01/17/60, reprinted in March 1960 FBI Law Enforcement Bulletin, page 7] “In general, legitimate civil rights organizations have been successful in excluding Communists, although a few have received covert counseling from them and have even accepted them as members…The CP is not satisfied with this situation and is continually striving to infiltrate the civil rights movement at every level. " [J. Edgar Hoover, U.S. News and World Report, 11/1/65, page 46] Furthermore, FBI files make it self-evident that Bureau investigations falsified many of the arguments favored by right-wing extremists. Among just a few that come to mind: 1. FBI stating that Highlander Folk School was NOT dominated or controlled by Communists and was NOT subversive 2. FBI stating that the Watts Riots were NOT Communist created or dominated or controlled 3. FBI stating that the widespread racial disturbances in the 1960's were NOT generally produced by Communists 4. FBI concluding that accusations made against many civil rights leaders and organizations were maliciously FALSE -- including (for example) accusations made against the NAACP, and against A. Philip Randolph and Roy Wilkins and Thurgood Marshall and Ralph Bunche, and Robert C. Weaver. BOTTOM-LINE To pretend that Hoover and the FBI were "racist" just because they "targeted" Martin Luther King Jr. would be very simple-minded. MLK Jr. (unlike most other civil rights leaders) solicited and accepted advice from known CPUSA members. MLK Jr. believed in Marxist economic doctrine. He spoke out against the Vietnam War. In the context of those times---it seemed like he might be unduly influenced by CPUSA members and that is why the FBI decided he needed to be monitored. We can recognize that Hoover's FBI exceeded its lawful authority and it behaved in ways which none of us wants our law enforcement agencies to ever do again -- but one can also recognize that the FBI, as an institution, was a complex entity and is not subject to facile derogatory conclusions just because our personal political views and values differ from those of Hoover (the man). There is probably no reputable historian, scholar, or author on Planet Earth who would make such an incredibly false characterization of Edwin Walker. This is solely the result of Paul Trejo's delusional state of mind. For a dose of reality: see page 425 of Dr. Caufield's book (bottom of page) regarding Walker's comments during his speech before Billy James Hargis's Christian Crusade 5th National Convention in Oklahoma City on August 4, 1963. [Historical note: Hargis was a life-long white supremacist -- which is why he invited people like Walker to address his Annual Conventions. I probably will receive the official billing notice sometime next week and then, after I submit my payment, it usually takes about another 10 days to receive the CD or DVD containing the file. After I receive the Walker file, I will prepare a summary and post it here -- probably during the first week in September. I received some additional info from NARA. The FBI-Dallas case file about Edwin Walker (Dallas 157-218) is 519 pages. 352 of those pages are being released in full to me with no redactions. 167 pages will have some redaction -- mostly to protect identities of named informants. I gave NARA a very lengthy list of deceased individuals connected to Walker - including everybody mentioned in Dr. Caufield's book and everybody mentioned in the FBI HQ main file on Walker (which I donated to Internet Archive). After I see what is redacted in the Dallas field file -- I might submit an appeal although it is not likely I will be able to ascertain the name(s) of informants who provided info to the FBI. Actually, in his published and official speeches, Ex-General Edwin Walker never said anything overtly racist. I will also note that Caufield's CT case against General Walker is very new -- at least in terms of actual scholarship. Why do you think Walker was invited to attend and be the featured speaker at so many Citizens Councils meetings -- keeping in mind that you have previously claimed that virtually all those groups were originally named "White Citizens Councils"? 3. How do you explain Walker's speech to the American Conservative Club in Harrisburg PA in which he declared that: “I think I can match three good Americans in the KKK for every one in the Americans For Democratic Action or the Anti-Defamation League.” Keep in mind that the KKK was (at that time) listed on the Attorney General's List of Subversive Organizations. 4. Why do you think Walker accepted the invitation to speak at a rally in Baton Rouge LA sponsored by “United Conservatives” which was a front for Citizens Councils of Louisiana -- where the only speakers were well-known racists such as Cong. John Rarick and Ned Touchstone? Touchstone was a KKK member and a rabid segregationist. Doesn't that give you a clue to Walker's personal beliefs? 5. Why would the Imperial Wizard of the United Klans of America (Robert Shelton) offer Walker the position of Grand Dragon of Texas during their July 1965 meeting in Shreveport LA? To your knowledge, has there ever been a KKK official or a KKK member or a KKK sympathizer in U.S. history who was NOT a racist? Why did Walker subsequently mention to someone that he was interested in that position? 6. In October 1965, why did Walker agree to speak to the Pasco County (FL) Federation For Constitutional Government – a front for the United Florida Ku Klux Klan of Dade County FL? Why would a KKK group invite Walker? To discuss his favorite TexMex recipes? 7. Why would Walker subscribe to Conde McGinley’s New Jersey newspaper, Common Sense, and make the comment in its 11/15/65 issue that: “I’ll bet you will find more good Americans in the Ku Klux Klan than in the Americans For Democratic Action.” 8. If Walker had no opinions regarding racial inferiority/superiority and his agreement with white supremacist arguments -- then why did he surround himself during his post-military career with prominent bigots including major officials of the explicitly racist Citizens Councils movement -- including Medford Evans (a leader in the segregationist movement and the editor of the Council's magazine) as well as accept countless speaking engagements before pro-segregation organizations? 9. Would you agree with the proposition that Walker wanted to be a major player in both Texas and national politics? If you agree with that premise, then would it be reasonable to conclude that Walker knew that overtly racist politicians had no significant national audience because such individuals repelled more people than they attracted AND, most important of all, overt racists could never attract the type of support (endorsements, financial contributions, publicity, and votes) from the very people whom Walker most needed if he ever was going to have a shot at state and national prominence and success, i.e. the mainstream conservative movement as well as the non-racist radical right--such as Robert Welch? Suppose you had a conversation with John Doe and he said to you: "Burglary is NOT illegal" and "Auto theft is NOT illegal" 2. Would those statements by John Doe give you any insight into John Doe's personal beliefs and values? 3. Suppose you then showed John Doe several city and state documents which clearly state that burglary and auto theft are crimes AND you also bring John's attention to precedent-setting court cases (state and federal) which indisputably establish that burglary and theft are crimes with very significant criminal penalties. 4. Suppose John Doe STILL tells you that you are wrong. 5. What would your exchange with John Doe tell you about the beliefs and values of John Doe? At a minimum, would it not suggest to you that John Doe has a warped understanding of settled law AND he should be a likely suspect for any burglary and auto theft crimes in your area? As I repeatedly pointed out, Ernie, Ex-General Edwin Walker made his living as an ultra-Right wing speaker, especially in the Deep South. Walker had been tempted into politics by the temper of the times. Governor George Wallace in 1963 was making public speeches in the South, and using the "N" word regularly. The South hated the Brown Decision. That's just obvious. Yet Walker plainly said that it should be a decision left up to the States, whether to Integrate or not. If a State -- like Mississippi -- plainly refused to racially integrate its public schools in obedience to Supreme Court Justice Earl Warren's Brown Decision, then by the politics of States Rights, in Mississippi, Integration was ILLEGAL. But it was a matter of State's Rights, and not a matter of Racism. Walker never used the "N" word in his speeches -- when he had every opportunity to do so. (Unless you believe one sole report by one biased newspaper writer.) Furthermore, it is quite obvious that Edwin Walker spoke almost entirely at Right Wing rallies in the South, including speeches for the John Birch Society, for the White Citizen's Councils, for the States Rights Parties and even for the Ku Klux Klan. That in itself didn't make Walker a member of the Klan. Also, to the best of my knowledge, Walker always avoided speaking for the American Nazi Party -- despite the fact that Walker would make statements calculated to raise Christian sentiment against Judaism. Walker was invited to join these Racist institutions, including a high office in the Ku Klux Klan -- AND WALKER ALWAYS TURNED THEM DOWN. That's important. Here's a note from Walker's personal papers on this -- it's from his personal desk -- it isn't dated and it's addressed to nobody -- perhaps it's a note to himself. During the JFK administration, the key Anticommunist theme was Cuba and Fidel Castro. That was the real political obsession of General Walker. Everything else was just politics. In 1963, the combination of Anticommunism with Racism turned out to be a true witches brew.
