All are being held on either drug or weapons charges. CBS4 Investigator Brian Maass reported one of the suspects told authorities they were "going to shoot Obama from a high vantage point using a ... rifle … sighted at 750 yards." Law enforcement sources tell Maass that one of the suspects "was directly asked if they had come to Denver to kill Obama. He responded in the affirmative." The story began emerging Sunday morning when Aurora police arrested 28-year-old Tharin Gartrell. He was driving a rented pickup truck in an erratic manner according to sources. Sources told CBS4 police found two high-powered, scoped rifles in the car along with camouflage clothing, walkie-talkies, wigs, a bulletproof vest, a spotting scope, licenses in the names of other people and 44 grams of methamphetamine. One of the rifles is listed as stolen from Kansas. Aurora police alerted federal officials because of heightened security surrounding the Democratic convention, Dudley said. "Clearly we found there are federal implications -- otherwise we would not have notified them," Det. Marcus Dudley with Aurora police said. "The weapons clearly would cause great concern." Subsequently authorities went to the Cherry Creek Hotel to contact an associate of Gartrell's. But that man, identified as Shawn Robert Adolph, 33, who was wanted on numerous warrants, jumped out of a sixth floor hotel window. Law enforcement sources say Adolph broke an ankle in the fall and was captured moments later. Sources say he had a handcuff ring and was wearing a swastika, and is thought to have ties to white supremacist organizations. A third man -- an associate of Gartrell and Adolph, Nathan Johnson, 32, was also arrested. He told authorities that the two men "planned to kill Barack Obama at his acceptance speech." Johnson, along with his girlfriend, Natasha Gromek, are also under arrest on drug charges. The Secret Service, FBI, ATF and the joint terrorism task force are all investigating the alleged plot. The U.S. Attorneys Office has scheduled a news conference for Tuesday afternoon. The U.S. Attorney in Denver said it does not believe there is a credible threat to Obama or the convention. "It's premature to say that it was a valid threat or that these folks have the ability to carry it out," said a U.S. government official familiar with the investigation. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation is ongoing. U.S. Attorney Troy Eid said the case was under investigation. "We're absolutely confident there is no credible threat to the candidate, the Democratic National Convention, or the people of Colorado," Eid said in a prepared statement. <END QUOTE> Best Regards in Research, Don Don Roberdeau U.S.S. Terry Adams
"CBS4 Investigator Brian Maass reported one of the suspects told authorities they were "going to shoot Obama from a high vantage point using a ... rifle … sighted at 750 yards." 750X3=2,250 feet. Is this something that someone would actually attempt. That is nearly 1/2 mile. Albeit, the distance would make for an easier escape attempt, but is it realistic thinking that one could hit the target at 750 yards. Maybe the huge amount of methamphetamines discovered with the guy had something to do with his rationalization. Comments, anyone? Terry Terry, Every Marine that has ever worn the uniform qualifies at 200-300 and 500 yards, with the m-16, and iron sights! Look ma, no scope! Scout/Snipers train and qualify regularly at 1000 yards. A shot of 750 yards, depending upon the rifle of course, would not be a great feat for someone with a bit of training and experience. I do not know that those arrested fit that, but, the shot itself is very doable. Mike
Pamela Brown
I've had a mental scenario that hopefully cannot now come to pass -- it was based on the ManCan remake, where the mother (Meryl Streep) is made-up to look just like Hillary. It goes like this -- Hillary keeps all of her delegates into the convention and Obama 'conveniently' falls victim to a plot such as the one described in this thread. Hillary is on stage with him when the attack happens, and of course she manages to be the one who catches him when he falls. Through her 'fearlessness' she becomes the savior of the event, and, of course, ultimately, the nominee.

Greg Parker
Amazing stuff. These guys aren't regarded as a serious threat. Nope. They didn't mean the threats. The group they belong to is just a social outlet for guys who like burning crosses and wearing bedsheets. The guns, purely recreational. But this guy... this guy you better look out for. Lock him up. Deport him. Put him on a Watch List. The guy is the worst of the worst - an Aussie VBlogger who wouldn't know one end of a gun from the other. http://www.abc.net.au/austory/specials/rea...tes/default.htm Good grief. No wonder the US has such an image problem with the rest of the world. Edited August 27, 2008 by Greg Parker
Don Roberdeau
Good Day.... FYI.... <QUOTE> US official: Colorado men no true threat to Obama AP Posted: 2008-08-26 21:42:34 By KRISTEN WYATT and LARA JAKES JORDAN Associated Press Writers DENVER (AP) - A group of suspected drug users arrested in Denver this weekend with methamphetamine, guns and bulletproof vests made racist threats against Barack Obama but posed no true danger to the presidential candidate who arrives here later this week to accept the Democratic presidential nomination, federal authorities said Tuesday. The three men - all said to be high on methamphetamine when arrested - are the subject of an assassination investigation, but so far, authorities say, it appears they had no capacity to carry out any attack on Obama. "The law recognizes a difference between a true threat - one that can be carried out - and the reported racist rantings of a drug addict," U.S. Attorney Troy Eid said. He said the men's plans were "more aspirational, perhaps, than operational." The three have been charged with drug and weapons offenses but not with threatening to assassinate Obama or with other national-security-related crimes. Obama will become the first black nominee for president by a major U.S. political party at this week's convention. Eid insisted that the vague racist threats from the men would continue to be investigated. He said he did not know whether Obama had been briefed on the arrests or whether security plans would change for Obama's acceptance speech Thursday. An affidavit released by Eid's office Tuesday showed the investigation into alleged threats intensified with an unnamed female who was with the men - Tharin Gartrell, 28; Shawn Robert Adolf, 33; and Nathan Johnson, 32 - while they were doing drugs in a Denver hotel room last weekend. The woman told police the men were using a racial epithet to refer to Obama and saying he should not live in the White House. Johnson later told a federal agent that the men talked about assassinating Obama only because he was black, according to a federal arrest affidavit. Johnson said he also heard Adolf say that he wanted to kill Obama "on the day of his inauguration" and that he would "find high ground to set up and shoot Obama," the affidavit said. Eid said authorities determined there was no firm plot to harm Obama. Asked what else they could plan to do with the weapons, Eid said, "I don't know what they were for." "A bunch of meth heads get together, we don't know why they do what they do. ... People do lots of stupid things on meth," Eid said. "If you're talking about a true threat, there has to be some evidence they're not just talking about it or thinking about it, especially in a drug-induced state." Homeland Security officials say the biggest domestic terrorism threat to the presidential conventions would be a "lone wolf" - someone who sympathizes with white supremacists and is inspired by racist beliefs, according to an Aug. 22 intelligence assessment obtained by The Associated Press. In an AP interview last week, the head of the Secret Service's Protective division said the white supremacist threat to Obama has been exaggerated. "I think that it's something that, at times, the media tried to make more of," Nick Trotta said. "We've always watched them, as we watch all the other groups." Gartrell was arrested after police in Aurora, a suburb east of Denver, stopped a truck that was swerving erratically around 1:30 a.m. Sunday. He had a suspended driver's license, and the truck was rented under someone else's name, said Aurora police Detective Marcus Dudley. Aurora police Lt. Bob Stef said police found two scoped rifles, two wigs, camouflage clothing, a bulletproof vest and two walkie-talkies in the truck. A search also revealed 4.4 grams of what police believed to be methamphetamine and three IDs in other people's names, Stef said. Johnson and Adolf were arrested at area hotels after police interviewed Gartrell. Adolf jumped out a sixth-story window when police arrived Sunday. He broke his ankle but tried to run before police found him a short distance away. Adolf was charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of body armor by a violent felon and possession of methamphetamine with the intent to distribute, according to a criminal complaint filed Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Denver. Gartrell and Johnson were charged with simple possession of meth, meaning the amount involved was less than 5 grams, and Johnson also was charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Three senior FBI officials said that at least two of the men may have had white supremacist ties. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the case. A fourth federal official familiar with the investigation said an assassination attempt was unlikely. "The capability and their opportunity and what they had for their weaponry - I don't see that they would have been able to carry it out," the official said on condition of anonymity because the investigation is ongoing. Adolf was hospitalized and held on $1 million bond for several outstanding warrants involving drug charges. He was on the "Most Wanted" list of the Weld County, Colorado, sheriff's department for burglary, larceny, aggravated motor vehicle theft and other charges. Gartrell, who has no known address, was being held at the Arapahoe County jail on $50,000 bail on drug and weapons charges. The jail said he was due in court Thursday. Eid would not describe the woman who was allegedly doing drugs with the men or say whether she was charged with a crime. Law enforcers were also investigating whether the men were linked to vandalism shootings that targeted at least two federal buildings in Denver over the past two weeks. Windows were shot at the U.S. Custom House and the U.S. Military Entrance Processing Station on the same street in Denver's downtown Federal District. Additionally, a bullet was recovered from a Hertz rental car that was hit Aug. 15, and authorities are now looking to see whether it could have matched the guns seized from the men. Lara Jakes Jordan reported from Washington. Associated Press writers P. Solomon Banda in Denver, Eileen Sullivan in Washington and Ken Ritter in Las Vegas contributed to this report. <END QUOTE> Best Regards in Research, Don Don Roberdeau U.S.S. John F. Pat Speer
I can't believe the backwards thinking of these Homeland Security guys. Clearly brainwashed by the McCloy/Dulles school of investigation, which holds that conspiracies only occur in banana republics, they refuse to take the threats of a group of drug addicts with high-powered weapons seriously. If ONLY Cat Stevens had been in the meth-heads' CD player, then they might have investigated a possible C-word (C*nspiracy).

Robert Howard
... [C]ompare and contrast their fate with that of our sheet wearing friends. Those are towels, Greg! Our sheet-wearing 'friends' have names like Bubba and Jim Bob. There is an old adage, "everything changes, everything stays the same." What amazes about this situation with Obama, is that it begs the question regarding the degree of seriousness, or lack thereof on the part of the investigative agencies, is this not clearly "dereliction of duty?" And it is not the first time this type of situation has reared it's ugly head, with regards to Barrack Obama. Sometime last year, there was a Ku Klux Klan, or White Supremacist who made threatening remarks about Obama, and it is my understanding that he was not detained, I never read any account of him even being questioned, but I did not follow the story that closely at the time. There have been eerie parallels in the last 18 months regarding events now compared to the 1960's. There was a hue and cry in Congressional circles over foot-dragging regarding the extension of the Voting Rights Act, which originally passed in 1964, then there was the Republican led dynamic of questioning the patriotism of individuals who did not support the War in Iraq, seemingly implying if one wasn't thrilled at the death and the mayhem in Iraq you were some kind of Communist sympathizer. The incredible right-there-in-black-and-white, cronyism shown at the CSPAN Hearings which televised the questioning of the CEO's of the major oil conglomerates on how the price of gas and oil was determined, was replete with every form of hand-holding by the Republican's in asking the questions, the only thing that was missing was asking the CEO's if they needed more ice for their drinking water. The salient point of all of this is that having lived through the 1960's, specifically the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr, it is very difficult not to think that somewhere in Washington there are a group of people who are saying, we cannot allow this man to become president. I hope and pray I am wrong, but in my view all of those assassinated in the 20th Century, [beginning with McKinley] were essentially populist's. In my view, I believe there are those in the halls of government who view populism as equally bad as Communism........But that is my opinion, and I am sure it is not widely held. Robert, What may have constituted populist policy in the South was part of the problem. But yes, I can see where you're coming from if you restrict it to equating Populism with Liberalism and progressive social platforms - and would whole-heartedly agree. In the South, however the Populist struggle was in State's Rights and all that came with it in regard to choosing segregation, prayer in school etc. Duke, I meant, it was the Brit alleged would-be assassins whose fate should be compared and contrasted with the US plotters - who I identified as the sheet-wearers. I know they were not literally sheet-wearers, but I was referencing their kind. 50 years ago they would have been in the sheets... I believe the US plotters would have been in far more hot water than they are now if they had been caught with picket signs on the way to the Republican Convention.
