It seems that Sarah Palin has not done a very good job with her daughter's sex education. It seems that the "Say No" campaign does not seem to work.

Alaska Governor Sarah Palin has announced that her 17-year-old daughter is five months pregnant. The announcement is “intended to knock down rumors by liberal bloggers that Palin faked her own pregnancy to cover up for her child,” says the Reuters news service, which carried the first report.

In a statement, the Palin family says that Bristol Palin is “about five months pregnant” and that she intends to marry the father. “We have been blessed with five wonderful children who we love with all our heart and mean everything to us," the Palins said in the statement. "Our beautiful daughter Bristol came to us with news that as parents we knew would make her grow up faster than we had ever planned. As Bristol faces the responsibilities of adulthood, she knows she has our unconditional love and support.”

The Palin family asked the media to “respect our daughter” and her privacy. According to the Reuters report, John McCain’s campaign was aware of the pregnancy when the Arizona senator selected Palin to be his running mate last week.

Then why is Mrs. Palin running for vice president? That puts her and her whole family under a media microscope. It might not be right or fair, but that's how it is. John didn't tell her that?

On the contrary she seems to have got the hang of it quite successfully

Nah, not a "year" its what a difference a pregnancy makes....

btw, Obama's "MOM" wasn't running as a reich-winger on a GOP presidential ticket known for espousing/preaching family values... The GOP has seen the light, thank you Jesus!

The election is still in the hands of women.

The Dem's will stay away from Palin -- Inertia and the press will do the job, McCain's judgement is front and center....

If Obama was smart, he'd announce his entire cabinet the day after the GOP convention. Perhaps there's a few more hamlets in Alaska Johnny can tap -- This election cycle is MADE for TV

August 4.

so, unless he was a pre-me, which I'm sure we'd know about, his mother would have been pregnant at....

*drum roll*

The announcement that McCain 'already knew' about this before picking Palin makes about as much sense as his sending a charter plane to fly LA and MS delegates back home before Gustav -- when all the roads were outward-bound.

No matter how they try to spin it, the young people have probably lost the ability to choose for themselves whether to marry or not.

The appointment of Sarah Palin reflects very badly on John McCain. If I was an American I would be very concerned about the decision-making of a man who could become president of the country.

Some political commentators are claiming that even though it is an irresponsible decision, it might help him win the election. They argue that a significant proportion of the electorate who are poorly educated make emotional rather than intellectual decisions about who they vote for.

The fact that she is strongly against abortion and sex education but in favour of capital punishments, guns and creationism will get her the support of the religious right (a group that still remembers McCain as describing evangelical leaders as "agents of intolerance"). In the 48 hours after Palin was appointed $7m was provided by the religious right in donations.

Palin's relationship with the oil industry will also help with the funding of McCain's campaign. It is also believed that her "beauty queen" looks will win her votes from those who see the election as some sort of "reality show".

It is also argued that her perceived weakness, her lack of knowledge about foreign policy, will be an advantage in the televised debates with Joe Biden. It is claimed that Biden's greater knowledge will suggest that he is patronizing her. This, and her defeat in the debate, will gain her sympathy, especially amongst women with a poor education who will identify with Palin.

As someone who doesn't like more than a handful of Democratic or Republican lawmakers, I really have no stake in this. However, I have to say that I believe McCain made a politically brilliant choice in Sarah Palin. She will help him where he's weakest (pro-lifers, gun enthusiasts, conservatives in general). She also will, I think, provide him with a lot more female voters, thanks to the disaffection of many Hillary supporters from Obama. And no matter how shallow it seems, her looks will certainly not turn people away from voting for her.

Unless her daughter's pregnancy becomes a much bigger scandal (which I think would be unfair, as Obama so eloquently put it), then I think McCain just significantly increased his chances of winning.

I want to take this opportunity to thank John McCain for imPalin' himself. I was so sick and tired of Obama and McCain that I was dreading two more months of this seemingly endless campaign to elect America's next incompetent president. But now these two months could really be fun. This must be why so many people watch soap operas every day.

the RIGHT (GOP-Republican Party) has marched lock step with the "family values", a mantra since Ronald Reagan days. NOW they're embracing pre-marital sex and all its virtues? I'm sure those in the bible belt are scratching their heads. "Where have our morals gone, John McCain? You've all but alienated the press, John!"

Will Sarah carry the ball for you now? It's getting crowded under that GOP bus these day's.... **a plane has been sent for the future Dad, the photo op was too much to ignore, see it tonight... What-a-GOP-cartoon, and THIS is the party of Abraham Lincoln?

The left need say nothing about Ms. Palin's (mother or daughter) family life. There's enough Alaskan political fodder for months on end. McCain and the GOP finally found the diversion they needed, a diversion to hide McCain's tenuous grasp on reality.

btw, I'm sure the DEM'S can thank the GOP for this elections moral HIGH GROUND. If they choose to accept it, of course... Stick to the issues, and the economy DEM'S -- steady as she goes...

Our local TV news is of course carrying everything-Palin today as she preps for her speech tonight. Repeatedly we are being told she needs to 'prove herself' with her speech tonight. That speaks volumes. We know some things about her family life, but nothing as yet about her position on the economy, oil, the Middle East crisis, Iran, Georgia and so on. We have simply been invited to be dumbed-down on her, at least so far. This seems a sort of sexism, as what her positions on the issues are don't matter, but her ability to hit a 'home run' and with a speech does. Oh, and of course, what she wears.

Only in America.
