James DiEugenio Posted May 8, 2018 Share Posted May 8, 2018 Its not as straightforward as that from what I understand and recall. JFK did not do a lot of the picking of his own cabinet. From what I remember, he assigned that to a committee and also go help from Lovett. This was after Lovett turned him down for Defense Secretary. When you examine Kennedy and his actions, in most key situations he, more often than not, went around his cabinet. Two examples being the Missile Crisis, the Steel Crisis, and the Vietnam withdrawal plan. In all three of those, he largely relied on his brother.
