CIA and LSD

Recommended Posts

Including the same LSD experimenter of the CIA named Jolyon West who saw Jack Ruby and Charles Manson

David Black is a author of many works on LSD and its history in particular "Psychedelic Tricksters: A True Secret History of LSD", tells the story of various people, beginning with the discovery of LSD’s hallucinogenic properties in 1943 by Albert Hoffman. In the late-1940s psychiatrists started using it as “psychosis-inducing drug” for schizophrenics. CIA officers investigated LSD’s potential as a weapon of mind-control and became enthusiastic trippers themselves. But the CIA and the medical establishment wanted to keep LSD out of the hands of “undesirables.” The “undesirables” included those in the new youth counterculture who challenged the official line on LSD and explored its potential for creativity and spirituality. Black lives in London and is an independent journalist and author. His previous books include The Philosophical Roots of Anti-Capitalism: Essays on History, Culture, and Dialectical Thought and 1839: The Chartist Insurrection.

Another good book on this is Heads by Jesse Jarnow. It’s a fascinating history, and I just love that the primary distribution network for LSD in America fairly quickly transferred from the CIA to, of all things, the Grateful Dead. There’s a conspiracy theory that MKULTRA and its offshoots conducted mind-control experiments at Dead shows, and even that the Dead was somehow in on it. Owsley Stanley does have some pretty strange connections, and I can’t think of a better place to study the effects of psychedelics than a group of 10,000 dosed hippies. That said I’ve never seen any actual evidence for that sort of thing.

In the U.K. an old friend of mine, Andy Roberts published 'Albion Dreaming' covering the introduction and consumption of LSD in the U.K.  A book I notice is now over £100 to purchase.  I did contribute to the text.

The above made me smile.  Once Operation Chaos was underway CIA were the suppliers of LSD to the Rolling Stones in the person of David Schneidermann who Jagger stated had many passports and a suitcase full of every herb and chemical.  When the police arrived the Stones were busted, but Mr. Schneidermann was quietly escorted away.

That’s also mentioned in the episode

David does mention in some detail Sidney Gottlieb and Stephen Kinzer's book Poisoner In Chief which gets really deep on this subject, well worth the read.  He also mentions Tom O'Neill but I didn't hear him mention Tom's book CHAOS the finish of which was inspired by his finding of the files of Jolyon West's files, untouched, in the basement at UCLA.  It connected a lot of dots on West for me.  From O.D.'ing the elephant while at OU at the OKC zoo on acid to running (often absently) the crash pad to study stoned hippies during the summer of love in Haight Ashbury.  To Manson to Ruby - who flipped out during West's first visit (hypnosis and LSD?).

Robbie, your reaction when David mentioned Frank Olson going out the 11th floor window was priceless.  That's covered in Poisoner in Chief, there is much more de tail to the story.  The documentary he couldn't remember the name of on Olson is Wormwood.  I've never watched it but think I'm finally going to do so as it's free on Netflix.  There is also a website, Wormwood l The Frank Olson Project, but my malware warns me it's an unsafe site (?).

Another great show, thanks.

I started watching this today.  Thought it was an hour or two single episode, not six.  The first was very engaging so was most of the second but I was tired and dozed off.  Engaging enough I want to watch the rest.  The son's perspective is unique to say the least.  The footage of Ford apologizing on behalf of the CIA is historic.

Speaking of Charles Manson, Tom O'Neill has written an interesting book about him and those tragic events, called "Chaos"...

It looks like the Bug was not only irresponsible in his telling of the assassination, but also keeping secrets about what really happened with Charles Manson and the Tate-LaBianca murders...seems there is much more to tell...
