Oswald's Escorts: The Garrison Files

Recommended Posts

Matt,

Sylvia Odio did state that she would have quite a few visits by members of the exile community. Murgado may have visited her but at a different time. So, he may be telling the truth as he knew it.

Other researchers believe that "Angel" may have been Herminio Diaz-Garcia. HDG and Carlos did have more than a few friends in common. Both were associated with Carlos Zarraga. Zarraga was the number three guy in JURE. He would supply both weapons and men for JURE infiltration missions.

Matt,

There is a photo of Victor further up this thread.

Both sets of possible Odio visitors have their strengths and weaknesses. Carlos and Victor fit the description fairly closely. Carlos was a member of JURE during the critical time. Victor was not. Carlos had his POA with the CIA, Victor did not. Victor's brother Rene fit some of the Oswald escort sightings.

The other set would be the Rodriguez brothers, Arnesto and Emilio. Here we tied Arnesto directly to Banister, Oswald, and Bringuier. Emilio was a member of the counterintelligence group for SAS and JMWAVE. He connects directly to David Morales, Tony Sforza, Rip Robertson and David Phillips.

There was a major effort to recruit Mexico City Cuban Consul Eusebio Azcue before he was scheduled to return to Havana Oct 4, 1963. Tony Sforza was tasked with getting his and Emilio's asset Jose Casas (AMOT-106) to make a final pitch to Azcue to get him to defect either in place or come to the US. We know that failed.

In this world of coincidences, we know that "Oswald" met with Azcue and somehow knew that Azcue was going back to Havana during his short visit.

Here you can see Sylvia Odio's uncle going down the stairs. Around 9-15 seconds in you see Oswald giving the hairy eyeball, in order, to Carlos Bringuier, Arnesto Rodriguez, Emilio Rodriguez and who I believe to be Arnesto Sr.

Arnesto Rodriguez is as shady as they come. When the Justice Department ordered the FBI to stop all investigation of the CRC in New Orleans in Fall ‘62 after the FBI stumbled on a CIA operation, Arnesto effectively became the official CRC/FBI liaison since he was a numbered informant and the only subsequent FBI source of any inside info on CRC activities. His FBI handler was Warren DeBrueys. He was also on the secret CRC military committee - and of course the guy who allegedly referred Oswald to former CRC New Orleans propaganda expert Carlos Bringuier.

One thing I thought was interesting is that Elise Cerniglia, another FBI informant and almost certain CIA asset, told Harold Weisberg that she’d been getting complaints at the Cuban Catholic Center for three days before the Bringuier incident of a “nut” leafleting pro-Castro propaganda.   Cerniglia supposedly had the most detailed collection of files on Cuban exiles in New Orleans, rivaled only by the INS. I doubt the files still exist but that’d be some incredibly valuable stuff to track down for the ARC.

As I’m sure you know, Arnesto’s mother (I think) claimed he had a tape of Oswald speaking in his office after the assassination. Arnesto’s “explanation” was that he’d prepared a Spanish translation of Oswald’s radio debate for dissemination in Latin America, which of course never surfaced.

Why do you think the Rodriguez brothers might have been the Odio visitors? I didn’t even know Emilio was in New Orleans that summer, let alone that he was mixed up in the whole Oswald thing. I’ve also seen his address listed as North Carolina on CIA documents.

Tom,

It was Arnesto's mother-in-law that reported on him. Can't trust those mothers-in-law!  🙂

Arnesto claimed to have only one face to face with Oswald. I just don't believe him. He knew lots about him that could only come from a few conversations. Arnesto knew Banister "and all those guys." Arnesto was also a supporter of George Lincoln Rockwell of the American N A Z I Party. In the Oswald world of coincidences, Rockwell's name and address were in Oswald's notebook along with Dan Burros. Speculative on my part, but I suspect Rodriguez and Oswald talked about politics and the far right. AR knew that Oswald knew about the MDC training camp.

Matt,  given that Barker was a general political action liaison to several of the exile groups and basically a collections point for all the various iterations of their relationships and networks this looks to be fairly routine...not sure it reflects a special relationship but David may have other ideas.

David or Larry might already have this file, but in today's bulk NA release there was this file showing a relationship between Bernard Barker and Carlos Hernandez.

Hi Matt,

I think that was Carlos Hernandez Hernandez. Carlos Hernandez Sanchez was good friends with Barker. They used to drive around Miami together. If I remember correctly, Barker used to go fishing with CH's grandfather in Cuba.

“If I were ever granted immunity, and compelled to testify about past actions, about Dallas and the Bay of Pigs, it would be the biggest scandal ever to rock the United States.”

This quote is attributed to Rafael "Chi Chi" Quintero. My concern is that there is no verified source for this, no proof he ever said it.

Can anyone enlighten us on this?

But we need to find the OG source here.

Could try finding/reaching out to the author of the obit, Phil Davison. He wrote that Quintero “was once quoted as saying…”, so you’d think there’d be a source somewhere.

I thought this article hosted on MFF might be pulling from the obit, but since it was apparently originally hosted on geocities, and uses different phrasing “Quintero has said publicly”, I got curious if it could potentially predate the obit. I didn’t see a date but did find this:

Recently I interviewed former CIA liaison officer L. Fletcher Prouty. He is a consultant for the excellent new movie on how the CIA killed JFK, being made by Oliver Stone.

http://www.newsgarden.org/columns/bush&jfk.shtml

Of course there’s no citation on the Quintero quote. It also doesn’t have the full quote, and the quote is different, saying “nation” instead of “United States”:

Quintero has said publicly that if he ever told what he knew about Dallas and the Bay of Pigs, "It would be the biggest scandal ever to rock the nation."

Since Davison uses a different, longer quote, it seems doubtful that this random Bush-did-it essay was his source. If the Bush article is legit and was really written in the early 90s, I think it actually helps the credibility of the quote a tiny bit? Maybe? The alternate wording is a bit concerning though.

That's very good detective work there, Tom, and indeed this gets the quote back to at least the early 90s.

That article is fairly batsh*t insane, however, loaded with quite a few provably false assertions, which does not lend itself to me comfortably buying into the quote.

But it does say that Quintero said what he said "publicly", so perhaps there is a better, earlier source somewhere.
