Guy Gabaldon, a Marine private in World War II who used extraordinary grit and a smattering of Japanese phrases to capture more than 1,000 Japanese soldiers single-handedly in the battle for Saipan, died Thursday in Old Town, Fla. He was 80.

The cause was heart disease, his son Guy Jr. said.

In mid-June 1944, Private Gabaldon took part in the invasion of Saipan, a part of the Mariana Islands, as a member of the Second Marine Division. Thousands of Japanese soldiers staged suicide charges against American lines over the next several weeks while entire native families leaped to their deaths from cliffs to avoid falling into American hands. But Private Gabaldon, going out on what he called “lone wolf” missions, brought the enemy back alive.

He earned the Navy Cross, the Marines’ highest award for valor after the Medal of Honor. It was presented to him as an upgrade from his wartime Silver Star after his exploits became widely known through the television program “This Is Your Life” and the Hollywood movie “Hell to Eternity” (1960).

“Working alone in front of the lines,” the citation read, “he daringly entered enemy caves, pillboxes, buildings and jungle brush, frequently in the face of hostile fire, and succeeded in not only obtaining vital military information, but in capturing well over 1,000 enemy civilians and troops.”

In “Saipan: Suicide Island,” his 1990 memoir, Mr. Gabaldon wrote: “Immediately after landing on Saipan I decided that I would go off into enemy territory to fight the war as I saw fit. I always worked alone, usually at night in the bush. I must have seen too many John Wayne movies, because what I was doing was suicidal.”

Private Gabaldon hardly looked the part of a recruiting-poster marine. He was a shade under 5 feet 4 inches. But he spoke “bits and phrases” of Japanese, as he put it, from his friendship with a Japanese-American family while growing up in Los Angeles, a poor youngster of Hispanic descent. He called upon that in his one-man missions.

“My plan, as impossible as it seemed, was to get near a Japanese emplacement, bunker or cave, and tell them that I had a bunch of marines with me and we were ready to kill them if they did not surrender,” he recalled. “I promised that they would be treated with dignity, and that we would make sure that they were taken back to Japan after the war.

“When I began taking prisoners it became an addiction — I found that I couldn’t stop — I was hooked.”

At first, he captured small groups of enemy troops, but then, on a single day in July 1944, as he recalled it, he persuaded some 800 Japanese soldiers to give up their arms and follow him back to American lines, bringing him the nickname the Pied Piper of Saipan.

He was wounded by machine-gun fire in the final days of the battle, ending his combat service. He later operated seafood businesses in Mexico and on Saipan.

Mr. Gabaldon was an adviser in the filming of “Hell to Eternity,” in which Richard Eyer portrayed him as a youngster and Jeffrey Hunter played him as a marine. He was honored at the Pentagon in 2004 as part of Hispanic Heritage Month, and he was the subject of a recent documentary, “East L.A. Marine,” produced by Steven Jay Rubin.

In addition to his son Guy Jr., he is survived by his wife, Ohana; his sons Ray, Tony, Yoshio, Jeffrey and Russell; his daughters Aiko, Hanako and Manya; his sisters Florinda Gabaldon and Martha Jensen; and many grandchildren. His first marriage, to June Gabaldon, ended in divorce.

When “Hell to Eternity” was about to open, Mr. Gabaldon reflected on his exploits but also on his comrades in arms. “The heroes are still over there,” he told The Chicago Tribune-New York News Syndicate. “Those who gave their all are the heroes.”

Ron, I'm not familiar with Sprague's book, but how could such a WWII hero be part of the conspiracy to kill JFK?

The kind of person (patriot) that Mr. Gabaldon seemed to be and planning to kill the president do not mesh IMO. My father served in WWII, where he received 3 purple hearts, a bronze star and silver star medal He had great admiration for the president. I think that much of that admiration had to do with JFK's wartime service.

Sprague's source might have been Larry Harris. In Harris and Shaw's 1976 book Cover-Up, they featured a page full of photos on page 164. The caption read:

The individuals on the opposite page are mentioned in the Warren Commission "Hearings" and unpublished Commission documents; some were prominent in the Garrison Inquiry; some are mentioned in other publications concerning the Kennedy assassination. Several of these persons are believed to have been directly or indirectly involved in the President's murder, and some are suspected of being actual gunmen in Dealey Plaza.

According to the captions, the individuals are Thomas Beckham, John Howard Bowen, Gerry Patrick Hemming, William Duff, Guy Gabaldin, Manuael Garcia Gonzalez, Hank and Wanda Killam, R.D. Matthews, Emilio Santana, Gorden Novel, Robert and Nancy Perrin, Jack Youngblood, and a member of this Forum.

I mention this only because of the different spellings of Gabaldon's name.

Using automatic weapons, grenades, and other ordinance, the super-patriot assassins would, at the expected cost of their own lives, kill the President!

This was the deceptive scenario, to the exclusion of all other reported super plots that was swallowed by government agencies charged with Internal Security and presidential protection (FBI and Secret Sercvice). It was later reported that at least 350 Federal and State security agents were on assigned duty at the Trade Mart on November 22, 1963.

Even being tight-knit with the individuals involved, except for bits and pieces of confusing information, I failed to timely detect a clearer picture of the real and more subtle plot to kill the president.

The plan moved relentlessly and Kennedy’s final days dwindled swiftly away. I reported the scarce details as they developed, to my Intelligence contacts. But a “need-to-know” method of secrecy was being applied among my radical associates.

Guy “Gabby” Gabaldon, the casual but cruel ex-Marine, World War II hero of Saipan, was at any instant in contact with the principals and financiers of the intrigue. But he alone directed and manipulated the footsoldiers of infamy.

When the name of a Fair Play for Cuba Committee communist was broadcast throughout the rightist circuit after the airing of an August, 1963 radio program from Station WDSU, New Orleans, Louisiana, Lee Oswald was “selected” by another of our JBS associates, retired U.S. Army General E.A. Walker of Dallas, Texas. The subject was then chosen by Gabaldon as “the fall guy” in the secretive plot against Kennedy. None of us objected, and found it humorous to frame a communist. I quietly considered it as goofy as the weird, but hazy arrangements to kill the president.

When Kennedy visited Mexico City in late June of 1962, Gabaldon, in league with some rightist Mexican Federal Police Officials, was set to shoot the president. Only a last minute escape problem aborted that attempted assassination scheme.

In late August, 1963, Gabaldon and I kept an appointment with former U.S. Congressman John H. Rousselot, then Western Director of the John Birch Society at his San Marino, California office. Gabaldon picked up ten thousand dollars as pre-arranged from Rousselot. The money was for the “Mexico Operation”. Some of these funds were given to Lee Oswald.

Two other of our anti-Castro, anti-communist associates, Lawrence “Skip” Howard – AKA Alonzon Escruido, and Loran Eugene “Skip” Hall – AKA Lorenzo Pacillo, were dispatched by Gabaldon (all were of Latin American descent) to enlist Oswald in the CIA (Central Intelligence Agency). In late September 1963, he bagan working at the book depository building in Dallas.

The poor slob was awaiting further instructions from another fake CIA contact that, among other details, requested him to deliver weapons, supposedly to be picked up at his workplace along with other weapons to be donated and used by anti-Castro raiders.

The names Alonzo and Lorenzo were the former given names of Howard and Hall, and used by them as so-called “war names”. In the 1964 Warren Report, the Cuban refugee, Mrs. Sylvia Odio and her sister Annie Lauri Odio reported a September 25, 1963 meeting with Angelo, Leopoldo, and Leon Oswald, who spoke of shooting the president. Odio, limited in English phonics misquoted the names Alonzo, Lorenzo and Lee. Originally, Hall confirmed to FBI agents that they were at Odio’s residence.

Gabaldon returned again from Mexico for a brief visit to his family home in El Monte, California in September 1963. He and I readied a huge mass of medical drugs and supplies gathered from several (SDS) doctors throughout Southern California.

Some medical drugs were slated for Gabaldon’s JBS front operation called DACA (Drive Against Communist Aggression) in Mexico. The majority of these supplies were destined to accompany Hall and Howard’s car and trailer load of weapons and ammunition to No Name Key in Florida. The goods were to aid “La Sombra” (The Shadows), an anti-Castro raider group under the command of Hall. This effort was organized by (LDS) W. Cleon Skousen and (JBS) John H. Rousselot, and chaired by anti-Castro Cubans. It was not a CIA operation.

People think of us as wholly or primarily an anti-Communist organization. This causes many misunderstandings. The truth is that our fight with the Communists is purely incidental to our longrange objectives – (JBS) John Birch Society

The group was soon arrested and the war supplies were seized by Federal and State authorities, ending further raids. Later plans using an attack boat, donated by a wealthy New York JBS member, were unsuccessful and the vessel was also seized. After being released from any charges, the defeated raiders split up. Hall and Howard, at Gabaldon’s direction, to New Orleans, Louisiana, picked up Oswald and continued on to Dallas, Texas where they made several stops to raise desperately needed funds. The three then crossed the border and drove to Mexico City on the same day, a September 26, 1963 Dallas newspaper report confirmed it’s earlier September 13 announcement of Kennedy’s visit to Dallas. All such information had no significance to those who desired to hasten his death. Kennedy’s Dallas trip was a non-secret. It was known and leaked months earlier by termite (white ants) and mole-agents-in-place that lurked for over sixty years in every agency, service, and bureau of U.S. government. That burrowing (LDS) moles and termites who’s sacred duty is always to serve only the ultimate goal of the LDS-JBS conquest, informed Research Intelligence Department (RID) of the John Birch Society on a continuing basis concerning the movements and even the personal activities of the president.

General Edwin A. Walker, removed form command and forced into retirement by the Kennedy administration, was acting on his own behalf, as much as for the “new American order” that he served in both military and civilian life. Walker was more than a leader of ultra-conservatism. Hew as an arrogant, powerless, but explosive force, enjoying the praise of his LDS-JBS co-conspirators and followers. When Kennedy entered Texas, his life was in the deadly hands of “extremist veteran riflemen” of Walker’s former Munich, Germany 24th Infantry command.

Every separate, subversive effort of months was aimed at that fateful day. The violent defeat of a hated, repressive liberal system and the death of it’s president would suddenly and forever wreck an already weakened and compromised liberal establishment. Kennedy’s popularity was at its lowest point by September, 1963 (according to a Gallup Pole). A previously framed fall guy (Oswald) with recently arranged (by my associates) pro-communist connections to Russian and Cuban embassies, would be assumed guilty, especially after and because of his own sudden death. These events were based on the shock-treatment affects of Kennedy’s assassination. (Oswald’s alleged guilt destroyed the powerful and subversive Fair Play for Cuba Committee and, with it, Castro’s influence in the American hemisphere.) The planned “new Americanist scheme” with its framework so cunningly in place more than half a century, moved quickly to consolidate and hold perpetual power over a bewildered government and a confused nation.

If treason prosper….none dare call it treason.

Who then can ever be tried or convicted of these awful crimes, when the guilty control all legal and moral judgments, and dictate their own version of history?

Upon receiving my November 19, 1963 letter FBI Director J. E. Hover, dispatched the bureau agent (pictured above) along with two “special” agents from the Washington D.C. office, “to urge my continued silence” just as JFK and Oswald were being lowered into their graves.
