  1. The Hawley Family may be a big part of the engineering-related backdrop in Dallas in the decades lerading up to the JFK Assassination. There is a book entitled A Century in the Works: Freese and Nichols Consulting Engineers, 1894-1994 by Freese, Simon W.; Sizemore, Deborah Lightfoot. Publication: College Station Texas A&M University Press, 1994. In that book you will discover that a Major Hawley, who died in the aftermath of America's entry into World War II in the Pacific was "regional engineering adviser to the Dallas Loan Agency of RFC, with responsibility for examining engineering plans and loan applications submitted to the corporation. In 1933-34 he was appointed to the board of engineers of the West Texas Chamber of Commerce, again to pass upon the engineering adequacy of plans submitted for RFC loans. Hawley, Freese & Nichols did everything possible to help the firm's clients through the unfamiliar RFC application process. The firm tackled the legwork as well as the paperwork. Nichols spent several days in August and October, 1932, in Washington, appearing before the Engineers Advisory Board of RFC to represent Tarrant County Water Control and Improvement District Number One. The district sought a $450,000 self-liquidating loan for its flood control and water supply project. RFC's response was positive and timely. In October, the district's directors, contractors, and engineers celebrated Eagle Mountain Dam's completion and final inspection with a dam site barbecue. In November, word came that RFC had granted the $450,000 loan, enabling the district to make payments owed to the contractors and to Hawley, Freese & Nichols. page 255, Shortly after Jones and Gooch became associated with the firm, two more recent civil engineering graduates came in. Robert A. Thompson III, a 1955 graduate of the University of Texas, was in the U.S. Navy doing hydrographic and geodetic location work before joining the firm in 1958. For two years, Thompson was assistant hydrographic officer on the U.S.S. Tanner and made a hydrographic survey of the eastern Mediterranean Sea. His early field duties for Freese & Nichols would include surveying, inspection, concrete and soil samples testing, and construction administration of Texas Industries' Midlothian Dam, Brady Dam, Greenbelt Dam, and the Robert Lee reservoir...." It is quite the interesting read......

See WCD 577 Two specialists from the Secretary's of the Army's Dallas Field office will conduct a 10-day conference leadership institute for sixteen civilian executives from Army stations in Kansas, Nebraska and Missouri starting Oct. 19. The institute will be held in Kansas City. Conducting the meetings will be Stuart L Reed, training officer for the Dallas office and Vernon P. Barchett, the units personnel management analyst. The Dallas office headed by Pete Tamburo handles civilian personnel administration matters for eleven Southwestern and Midwestern states Tamburo said Monday that the institute in Kansas City effort is part of a continuing effort by the Department of the Army to improve the efficiency of its executive personnel. Mr. Reed joined what would become the U.S. Information Agency in 1946 as editor of a magazine for India. He later moved to the Voice of America, where he became the Munich-based European bureau chief. He conducted some of the first Voice of America broadcasts from Warsaw and Moscow. Returning to the United States in 1965, he became chief of Voice of America's worldwide English-language broadcasting. After a policy dispute regarding coverage deemed insufficiently supportive of the Johnson administration's Vietnam War policy, Mr. Reed was removed from his post by Leonard H. Marks, then-director of USIA and a former executive with Johnson-family broadcast outlets in Texas. John Charles Daly Jr., the Voice of America director and former host of "What's My Line?," resigned in protest. Mr. Reed, a 17-year USIA veteran at the time, was transferred to what The Washington Post described as "a lesser job editing a magazine in the press and publications service." The Post also noted that Reed, "popular among Voice employees, long has been an advocate of making the Voice more independent of USIA." After spending two years with the Agency for International Development, he rejoined USIA as editor in chief of "Amerika Illustrated," a glossy magazine distributed in the Soviet Union under an exchange agreement between the two countries. He retired in 1973, after four years as editor, and devoted himself to volunteer work teaching English to Asian refugees and to freelance writing. His articles appeared in a number of publications, including Harper's, The Post and Washington Monthly, where he was a contributing editor. In a 1975 article in The Post, he recounted the challenge a retiree faces in trying to convince friends and acquaintances that he was happy doing nothing. "I have adopted the upright and honorable course which my instincts first dictated," he wrote, "and I recommend it to other retirees: lie. Invent imaginary projects you've undertaken and describe them in great detail. Get these work-ethic freaks off your back. "Then relax and do nothing." Actually, Mr. Reed was an avid tennis player who took to the court five times a week well into his 80s. Mr. Reed was born in Montgomery, Ala., and received his undergraduate degree from New York University in 1939. During World War II, he served on a Navy minesweeper in the North Atlantic and later was the commanding officer of a submarine chaser in the Pacific. His first wife, Judith K. Reed, died in 1986. Hotel Calumet letterhead My Dear Mr. Griffin: I was just wondering if it could be possible for 1 one of the oil tycoons of Dallas was behind or supported Oswald in the assassination of our beloved President. I believe the honorable Jack Kennedy did not approve of the outcome of the Tidelands Oil Bill which is now dominated by Texas, Louisiana and California. I believe that Mr. Kennedy believed that the Tidelands or oil offshore bill belonged to all the people that the royalties belong to the school districts. Also there has been a lot of talk about the 271/2 percent oil depletion allowance that only the oil companies are allowed to deduct right off the top. I may be wrong but I believe my arguments merit consideration, thought & thorough investigation. am very serious about the above matter - think it over. P.S. You might check and see how Kennedy voted on the Tidelands Oil Bill when he was a U. S. Senator.

We have been down part of this road before, if I were a betting man, I would have to think that Mike Ryan and Mickey Ryan were one and the same or father and son, there has to be a correlation. If that were the case, then it would seem you have a couple of degrees of separation between Jack Ruby and the Mae Belcher crowd. Since David Ferrie did contact Mae Belcher, maybe this is a part of the universe that is being clarified with a little more detail. Other point of interest. At one time, I did a little bit of digging into whether there was an inter-relationship between Good Luck Oil Company, and GLOCO, Gloco, if you remember was the art-deco style gas station that J.D. Tippit was ostensibly parked at after the assassination, and when Oswald was en route to Oak Cliff from the TSBD. I was never able to develop a relationship, between the two but that does not mean there wasn't one, and if there was one, it would not have been being shouted from the rooftops, by those who would have been privy, if you know what I mean....... Hats off....to you Tom.....
  7. Be careful what you wish for, because you might just get it. An 8 mm film of the assassination, according to the document cited surfaced circa August 1971 as described below. Perhaps someone with a premium subscription [downloading privileges with same] can download the actual document. ADMIN FOLDER-O6: HSCA ADMINISTRATIVE FOLDER, ASSASSINATION MATTERS VOLUME II Found in: FBI - HSCA Administrative Folders (Date 5/10/71) 8/4/71 AIRTEL TO: DIRECTOR, FBI (62-109060) FROM: SAC, HOUSTON, (62-2115) (RUC) SUBJECT: ASSASSINATION OF PRESIDENT JOHN FITZGERALD KENNEDY Enclosed for the Bureau is one 8mm movie color movie film reflecting captioned assassination. HO-1677-PCI made available enclosed film on evening of 7/30/71. Film viewed at Houston on 8/2/71 for verifi- cation. Source advised that he bought same for $25.00 from one KIRK MILLER, an anesthesiologist, who works at the Brown- Fondren Building of the Methodist Hospital, 6516 Bertner, Houston, Texas. Source states that MILLER wants to prove to the American people that President KENNEDY was also shot from the front and MILLER is using film to prove this point as President KENNEDY’s head appears to move back sharply after being shot in one scene of the film. Source states that MILLER alleges to have other copies of this film which he is going to sell at $25.00 each. Houston indices negative re Miller who is described as follows. http://www.maryferrell.org/mffweb/archive/viewer/showDoc.do?docId=10044&relPageId=157

His stringer Patsy Swank tipped off Life editors about the Z-film. Well, McCombs had developed information that there was a guy named Hidell, a bartender at a gay bar in Louisiana, where two of the regular customers were the McCurley brothers, both of whom were said to be involved in the FPCC leafleting with Oswald. I don't think this information was ever followed up on by the official investigators, Garrison or Life, probably because McCombs, a former ONI guy, was good pals with Clay Shaw. Thanks for that link, and I'd like to hear more from anyone who knows anything about McCombs or the McCurley brothers. BK JFKCountercoup.blogspot.com Thanks for that Bill, to tell you the truth, the most interesting thing about the FPCC leafletting Oswald and the McCurley brothers was that these brothers rap sheets extended into Texas as well as Louisiana, and their sexual orientation, by the latter, I don't mean it in any funny way, simply that it was even mentioned, and saving the best for the last, they were from Baton Rogue, remember our old Jack F Martin.......although he was from Goldonna, La., he was also possibly at the same leafletting, I am going on memory..... Barksdale AFB is another area of interest for myself......

The lease was handed over to Cpl. Harrison Hampel, 23, of San Francisco, Calif., attached to the Eighth Service Command. He delivered it to Capt. James H. Carter Army Emergency Relief officer, who will hold it in trust pending sale. This lease is out of the Martha Cody tract in the Juan Fensio survey. It is separated from the drillsite of Mrs. Belcher's test by a fifty-acre lease held by George B. McCamey of Fort Worth. It adjoins a lease held by the Cordova Union Oil Company Mrs. Belcher has six nephews in the service. She said Tuesday she hopes that every oil operator who drills a test well will donate a forty-acre lease to the Army Emergency Relief. The demands upon it will rise sharply she said, when the draft extends to fathers and the invasion of Europe occurs. Wide Experience In Oil Mrs. Belcher has had wide experience as an oil operator on the Pacific Coast and in the mid-continent area. She extended the KMA field in North Texas by bringing in a well which flowed ninety barrels an hour. Summarizing, throughout his conversations with Mr. Montague and myself, Mr Belcher continually interrupted, sprinkled his conversation with profanity, spoke in a loud derisive and aggresive manner and demeaned our efforts as unimportant and trivial. When we attempted to explain exactly what topics we were interested in discussing with him and why, he countered by demanding an immediate on-the-spot telephonic interview. When it became clear to him that his tactic of attempting to find out exactly what our questions were was not going to work, he terminated the telephone call. 13. The late Doyle Williams lived in my neighborhood in Fort Worth and often came to our neighborhood meetings. He "knew who I was" before I knew who he was (he was aware of my JFK research). He told me once that he was a chief dactylographer for the FBI. I replied, OH, I DIDN'T KNOW YOU WERE IN THE FINGERPRINT SECTION! Why was a fingerprint expert used in the reconstruction photos? Why was he at Parkland? Jack I suppose in some ways the following almost appears under the category of those stories that start with Man Chases Car and Bites Dog, after all these years. There was a CIA agent at Parkland Hospital on November 22, 1963 and his name was Mr. Linwood Davis see MEMO:MEMO BY PAUL HOCH CONCERNING CIA ACTIVITIES AND THE WARREN COMMISSION INVESTIGATION/COMMENTS AND ANSWERS TO HOCH QUESTIONS Following the assassination of President Kennedy DCI McCone instructed the Domestic Contacts Division to send an officer from its Dallas office to Parkland Hospital to contact and offer assistance to the FBI and Secret Service. It is really amazing to me that at one time, there was an incredible amount of interest in the Dallas CIA office and the aforementioned incident at Parkland Hospital. The identity and even the fact there was a CIA agent dispatched to Parkland Hospital, not to mention the possibility he was a relative of a well known right-wing family in Dallas, results in Zero responses. On a site dedicated to ascertaining the true facts of the assassination, what does that say about what is going on, on the Forum these days......

(1995) Another revelation of a false Oswald was reported on the first installment of the 1975 CBS television miniseries The American Assassins, during which an interview with ex-gunrunner Robert Ray McKeown by Dan Rather was shown. McKeown said he received a visit from "Lee Harvey Oswald" a few weeks before John Kennedy's murder. The man claimed that he was interested in buying bazookas and machine guns and intimated that he represented others. McKeown said that a tall Latino named Hernandez accompanied "Oswald. According to McKeown "Oswald was this little guy small blond-headed. Oswald was certainly not a small man. Nor did he have blond hair; it was brown. And what of his companion. Who was he? It is interesting to note that on August 9, 1963 when Lee was arrested in New Orleans for fighting with three anti-Castro companions, one of these three men was a tall Latin man with a mustache named Celso M. Hernandez. Robert: Groden goes on to posit that Oswald was potentially working with Hernandez, [if the Hernandez who was at McKeown's was the same person as Celso Hernandez] since the N.O. fight helped establish Oswald's pro-Castro bona-fides, At this late juncture it might be worth a conjecture, even if it is highly speculative could Hernandez, if he indeed visited McKeown been working with Capehart? CIA records state that Capehart worked for two different private business contractors on U.S. government classified projects but the records the Review Board examined do not show that CIA ever employed him as an officer, staffer, asset or source. 17. Great post. I enjoy recent Chinese history - 1917 and beyond. When I was in Shanghai in 1998 you could still walk quietly down the bund. I understand it has grown a lot since then. These collaborators were just one element that sold out their country. It was bad enough that there was a civil war going on, ( well good for the Japanese) but lowlifes and highlifes alike selling out their country made it a whole lot easier for the Japanese. I appreciate the kind words, there are other aspects of this area, that are perhaps equally fascinating, even if they are fascinating to a select few. Additional angles in the 1930's era is the evolution of the drug networks, opium would be the drug most associated with the Far East, and there is good reason why a book like The Politics of Heroin in SE Asia by McCoy is an essential book to placing the Kennedy Assassination in its proper context. It was strange yesterday, that I discovered [i don't keep track with every post, like I used to] something I just happened upon, by virtue of the fact that I noticed something on the Rose Cheramie thread, that made be look up something in a book. I should be very clear that just because it is in a book, does not mean it is reliable information. At any rate, the Shanghai opium connection seemingly was felt as far away as a specific event in Mexico, regarding Molly Wendt and Al Scharff, a somewhat famous U.S. Customs investigator in Texas who served from 1918-1960. His recount of the Wendt case is found in the book The Coin Of Contraband by Garland Roark pages 342-348. Molly Wendt, to cut to the chase, was a runner in the international drug trade circa 1930 who had the misfortune of being apprehended, in Roark's book he writes that after she was arrested "Lengthy interrogation revealed that Molly Wendt spoke excellent French and German as well as English; that she was suffering from advanced tuberculosis; that her trip from China was her trial run; that she was on the way to Mexico with the heroin. She named a few people in Mexico City, one of whom was N. L. Brandstätter, head of the Machinery & Engineering Corp. of Shanghai, China. According to Miss Wendt, he was the chief of the strong international smuggling ring, the majority of whose members were in Mexico. Two days after the world learned of Molly Wendt's capture in New York, a German doctor in Shanghai was found on a refuse dump with his throat cut, evidently because the narcotics gang thought he had 'put the finger' on Miss Wendt."
  18. I tried. I'm using Google Chrome and I received an immediate message that said, "Your session has been closed....Message Name: Session killed." It also said to try different browsers. I just want to say that gossip columnist, John Austin, told me that Oliver Stone seriously considered putting "Karyn Kupcinet" in his film JFK, as having foreknowledge. He decided to focus on "Rose Cheramie," as there were witnesses to her saying before it happened that they were going to kill Kennedy. Irv Kupcinet got wind of this. His tirades against that film were endless. But other columnists around the country were also outraged about JFK. Like Operation Mocking Bird? Kathy C Thanks Kathy. I will keep trying. I haven't read about Karyn Kupcient and her father recently. Is he the one who said when asked about who killed her daughter " the same bastards who killed Kennedy?" Peter, Cord Meyer said something similar and may be what you are referring to. Quote below is taken from the Meyer entry on the Spartacus site. "... In February, 2001, the writer, C. David Heymann, asked Cord Meyer about the death of Mary Pinchot Meyer: "My father died of a heart attack the same year Mary was killed , " he whispered. "It was a bad time." And what could he say about Mary Meyer? Who had committed such a heinous crime? "The same sons of bitches," he hissed, "that killed John F. Kennedy." http://www.spartacus...k/JFKmeyerC.htm I apologize for being unawares about locating the nara.gov links which I referenced a few posts back, before I posted this, I went back to see if the documents still pulled up when searching and they still did. To locate them is fairly simple. Go to the nara.gov website under JFK documents and under simple search simple enter "Cheramie," this should pull up the 24 documents cited. Equally important is to enter another name after clearing the URL for new search, and, this is important.... entering only the word Melba, many of the latter search hits will pull up names not associated with Melba Mercades, so you have to look at the hits individually, but, I guarantee there are documents in the latter search "Melba" results, that are specifically pertaining to Melba Mercades aka Rose Cheramie. Final Note: I have at times, exchanged correspondence with Douglas Valentine, who is a very important researcher, especially with regards to the Federal Bureau of Narcotics area ie Jack Ruby Organized crime ties the Warren Commission did not investigate and the CIA - MKULTRA area.... At any rate, at a certain point the issue came up why did, after the Houston INS confirmed to Fruge that Cheramie's Hotel reservations were not a myth, but factual did the INS agent "lose" the heroin dealer, after he stepped off the ship in Houston, I am in agreement with Valentine, who, discovered that the CIA strongly appeared to have had control over INS activities in Houston at that time, 1963 See The Strength of the Wolf page 313 ......And after, further digging I discovered that Houston, Texas had some severe problems with drug related issues long before anyone had ever heard of Rose Cheramie. On June 4, 1954, the Associated Press ran the headline of a story in Houston Probe Figure Found Shot A veteran vice-squad detective was found shot to death Thursday at police headquarters. The body of M.A. Billnitzer, 45, was found in a vice-squad office shortly after a high police official had confirmed reports that an investigation is underway on the handling of narcotics seized by city and federal officers. Chief of Police L.D. Morrison later announced the suspension of vice squad Capt. Foy Melton and Sydney Smith, a burglary and theft detective who was formerly a vice-squad officer. Melton had been Billnitzer's superior officer. Billnitzer's body was found only a few minutes after he had left a conference in the police chief's office. A pistol was near the body. Morrison said he had been questioning Billnitzer on allegations of "failure to tag and handle evidence properly" Morrison had earlier said his questioning of the officer "was not strong enough reason for a man to take his life." There are other even deeper looks into this area of corruption in the area of Texas law enforcement and bigwigs contained in the book The Coin of Contraband by Garland Roark. Unfortunately that book is hard to find.
  19. As a researcher who was never satisfied with the enigmatic Japanese links of Lee Harvey Oswald to the ersatz beginning of the JFK assassination chronology, [which some would say begins with the births in Germany and Russia in the 19th century of Karl Marx, Joseph Rubenstein, father of Jack Ruby, Friedrich Albert Sorge great-uncle of Richard Sorge George DeMohrenchildt, Tschippe Weidenbach, aka Chas. Willoughby, to cite a few names] it is arguably imperative to have some grasp of the first three decades of the 20th Century. See http://www.maryferrell.org/mffweb/archive/viewer/showDoc.do?absPageId=484577 Why? Because these critical decades are before not only the CIA, but the OSS, when the main intelligence agencies of today's world powers are shrouded in as much mystery as can be found at any other period in time. This period is also a continuation of the era of oil, which serves strongly as a backdrop to understanding the real history of the 20th century. This period was distinguished by cities such as Berlin, Paris, Moscow, Washington D.C., Tokyo and Shanghai Arguably, Shanghai was one of the first geographical locations where the Marxist/Capitalist ideological struggle was a true battlefield. The cities of Harbin in Manchuria, Riga in Latvia, Baku in present day Azerbiajan, also figure prominently in accounts of individuals associated in one way or another to the JFK saga. So the following is a crude attempt to provide a deeper look into this area. It may be helpful to remember another person, Colonel Nikolai Eroshkin, a figure who may have been, or was a link between the two worlds of pre-Tripartite Pact, Japan/Germany/Italy and the 1960's saga of Lee Harvey Oswald in Japan. He resides at Number 30 Nakasaka, Cho Azabu, Tokyo or Number 30 Nagasaka Machi, Azabu ku Blood Brothers : Crime, Business & Politics in Asia - Bertil Linter Collaborators and Renegades in Occupied Shanghai Bernard Wasserstein 1930s Shanghai was notoriously populated by characters of dubious political and moral allegiances. Bernard Wasserstein shows how the Japanese used their contacts among the city’s low-life to assist in their invasion and occupation. In July 1940, a fresh and exotic face enlivened Shanghai expatriate society. The Princess Sumaire, aged twenty-two, stepped off a boat from India and engaged a suite at the Cathay Hotel. She immediately attracted attention on account of her elegant appearance, her scandalous behaviour and her mysterious origins. Within a short time she had made a wide, multi-national circle of friends. Among them were officers of the local Italian garrison, a number of English and American society girls and a couple of professional dancers who went by the stage names ‘Don and Dolly’. Sumaire’s circle also included some more sinister figures: an abortionist, brothel-owner and sexual extortionist, Dr Albert von Miorini, a monkey expert, narcotics dealer and unqualified ‘doctor’, Hermann Erben, and a shady Franco-American journalist, aviator and pimp, Hilaire du Berrier. Sumaire settled down in the ‘Paris of the East’, relishing its cosmopolitan night life and lively café society. But Shanghai had a darker side. With its lurid vice, endemic violence, and conspiratorial atmosphere, no place on earth in the 1930s and 1940s better exemplified the twilight zone between professional and political criminality. Shanghai’s ever-open door attracted an extraordinary agglomeration of ill-assorted foreign communities: ‘White’ and ‘Red’ Russians imported their fierce mutual animosity from their homeland and perpetuated them in exile; German businessmen dutifully celebrated Hitler’s birthday at the German Garden Club but found to their dismay that they were outnumbered in Shanghai by thousands of ‘non-Aryan’ German-speaking refugees from Nazi persecution; upper-crust ‘Shanghailander’ Britons rubbed shoulders with Baghdadi Jewish property tycoons; Korean gangsters, Filipino musicians, low-life cardsharps, pickpockets and assorted con-men plied their various trades. So too did demi-mondaines of various nationalities who preyed on tourists at the Park, the Metropole and the Cathay hotels, as well as on naval and military men of half-a-dozen countries in other, more questionable, haunts. Even in superficially respectable areas of the city, meretricious glamour and horrific poverty, filth and squalor intertwined symbiotically. At Ciro’s night-club, the first in the city to enjoy full air-conditioning, British taipans and Chinese mobsters tangoed with their wives or mistresses into the small hours. Outside, uniformed Russian doormen – self-appointed ex-Tsarist ‘generals’ whose spurious medals could be purchased by the dozen in the Hongkew market – held importuning hordes of deformed Chinese beggars at bay. In less salubrious dance-halls, bars and ‘joints’, lines of Russian ‘taxi-dancers’ and Chinese ‘sing-song girls’ sat waiting for customers. In 1935 one in every thirteen women in Shanghai was reckoned to be a prostitute. Throughout the city violence was a constant threat, whether in the form of political assassination, gang warfare or lovers’ fights. The stained cobbles of ‘Blood Alley’ (rue Chu Pao-san) in Frenchtown bore witness to the frequency of brawls among foreign soldiers and sailors. God, who allowed Shanghai to endure, owed an apology to Sodom and Gomorrah – said the American Christian missionaries who strove to combat the devil in his own habitation. A Chinese journalist agreed: Shanghai, he wrote, was ‘a city of forty-eight-storey skyscrapers built upon twenty-four layers of hell’. Who was Sumaire? Why had she come to Shanghai? Was she really a princess? Detective Sub-Inspector McKeown, of the British-controlled Shanghai municipal police, whose special beat was Indian affairs, reported that Sumaire claimed to be the daughter of the late Maharajah of Patiala. Her past life, as well as her conduct in Shanghai, rendered her in McKeown’s judgement ‘open to suspicion either on moral or political grounds’. He discovered that she had been married as a child to a senior official of the Indian State Railways but later separated from him. Her family were said to have disowned her ‘owing to her loose morals’. From an Indian source McKeown ascertained that she was ‘a follower of the Lesbian cult’. The detective’s findings were submitted to his superiors, who placed one copy in the ‘confidential drawer’ and passed another on to Harry Steptoe, the British Secret Intelligence Service representative in Shanghai. Meanwhile, the subject of these prurient observations was kept under continued surveillance. Sumaire’s full name was Rajkumari Sumair Apjit Singh. She was not a princess. She was indeed a member of the princely Patiala family, though the exact nature of her relationship to the Maharajah was never firmly established by the investigating authorities. That potentate himself, when told by a visitor that his daughter had been seen, asked ‘which one?’ The visitor replied, ‘A girl who calls herself Sumaire claims to be your daughter’. Whereupon the Maharajah answered, ‘It is quite possible. I have twenty-three daughters’. The municipal police concluded, after inquiries in India, that she was the Maharajah’s niece. Detective McKeown, a stolid British policeman not given to sensationalism, added: ‘Although she was the niece of the late Maharajah, she was probably his mistress also’. In 1938, at the age of twenty, Sumaire had moved for a time to Paris where she had worked as a model for the fashion designer Elsa Schiaparelli. Sumaire was not conventionally beautiful. She had a podgy face, snub nose and was somewhat short for a model. On the other hand, she dressed elegantly in oriental-style robes and carried herself with poise and a certain dignity. In Shanghai she soon acquired the reputation of a nymphomaniac. Even the bellboys at her hotel, it was said, were not safe from her attentions. Like a voracious spider, she attracted first one, then another, eventually a buzzing swarm of admirers who found that, once enmeshed, they could not escape. If Sumaire had been merely one more party-girl among the continent-hopping ocean-liner set, she would probably have attracted little interest beyond the gossip columns of the Shanghai Evening Post and Mercury. But there was another dimension to her socialising that explained the special concern of the British police and intelligence authorities. Her friends Miorini, Erben and Du Berrier were all Axis agents. Sumaire was at the centre of one little circle of pro-Japanese criminal-political intriguers in Shanghai. Another revolved around a man whose multiplicity of identities and monstrosity of behaviour outclassed all possible competitors: ‘Captain’ Eugene Pick, alias Hovans,* alias ‘Doctor’ Clige – to mention only three of his noms de guerre. Pick, as we shall call him, was born Evgeny Mihailovich Kojevnikoff in 1899 or 1900 in Riga, Latvia, son of a Cossack army colonel. During the First World War he fought in the Russian army. He later claimed that he had been captured eleven times by the Germans and escaped back to the Russian lines on each occasion. From 1919 to 1922 he studied at the Military Academy in Moscow and at the Academy for Music and Drama. After graduation he was said to have worked as an assistant military attaché in the Soviet embassies in Afghanistan and Turkey. ...bled them [the British] for large sums of money for long and devious reports on Communist activities in China. When he had exhausted the British, subject [Pick] went to work for the US Treasury Department and double-crossed them out of US$600 and sold a tip-off to the group the Department was after on his first assignment for $2,000. Over the next decade, Pick became a well-known figure in Shanghai, as stage manager, actor, opera singer and ballet dancer. During this period he was best known under his stage name Eugene Hovans. He also opened his own theatre, which he grandiosely named the Far Eastern Grand Opera. The life and soul of the party, Pick had a good singing voice and would often break into sonorous renderings of Russian folk songs when dining out with friends. An acquaintance described him as having ‘a Mongolian cast of countenance... no hair at all, wears a black skull cap, has burned scars on his head... a heavy vodka drinker... a flashy dresser... usually went armed with a pearl-handled revolver.’ The scars on his head were rumoured to be the result of burning oil poured over him during torture sessions by Communists angry at his turncoat activities. A post-war American intelligence report described him as ‘well-educated, a good linguist, an accomplished actor, and a facile writer. He is also a competent murderer, intelligence agent, agent provocateur and smuggler of arms.’ Pick certainly found rich pickings during this period in the Shanghai underworld as a professional informer and small-time racketeer. According to one account he blackmailed an American judge who he discovered was homosexual; the judge’s body was later found in the River Whangpoo. In 1929 Pick was sentenced to nine months in jail for forgery. Two years later a Chinese court convicted him of fraud and extortion and condemned him to a year in prison: he had falsely represented himself as a military adviser to the Chinese government in Canton and in that capacity had secured million-dollar arms contracts. Later he was said to be hawking pamphlets and books stolen for him by coolies from the Soviet Consulate. In 1937 he was accused of white slavery and keeping a ‘house of assignation’. When he spoke about the Soviets it was as though he were possessed of a consuming hate. His face flushed, he became highly emotional, and gesticulated wildly like a dramatic actor, completely gripped by the role he was playing.… one of the most notorious Japanese gang members in Shanghai, extortionist and blackmailer. Killer when drunk. His sole aim with the Japanese: obtain as much money as possible by criminal means and hide behind Japanese officials. Other figures in Pick’s entourage included ‘Baron’ N.N. Tipolt, a former Russian naval officer, ‘Count’ Vladimir Tatischeff, blackmailer, swindler and informer for the Japanese gendarmerie and the local German gestapo, as well as numerous young White Russian women. These were a few of the more picturesque characters among the politico-criminal amphibians spawned in the mud of Shanghai’s secret wars. In this period Shanghai was the main intelligence marketplace for the entire Far East. As the centre of political activity in China, particularly of left-wing propaganda, and the home of a cosmopolitan population that included tens of thousands of political émigrés, it was a natural theatre for espionage operations, both Chinese and foreign. Before dawn on Monday, December 8th, 1941, the Japanese, who had already held much of the city since 1937, attacked the international settlement in the heart of the city. By this time all British and American troops had been withdrawn and the small French and Italian units in Shanghai were not disposed to resist the attack. The two remaining non-Japanese men-of-war on the Whangpoo, the USS Wake and HMS Peterel, were targeted by the Japanese at 4 am – an hour or so after the attack on Pearl Harbor. The Wake was overpowered by Japanese boarders before the skeleton crew were able to resist. The ship was taken without a shot being fired and the Japanese flag was hoisted. She thus enjoyed the ignominious distinction of being ‘the only American naval vessel of the Second World War to be captured intact and without resistance.’ She was subsequently renamed Tatara Maru and incorporated into the Japanese navy. By contrast, HMS Peterel, commanded by Lieutenant Stephen Polkinghorn, put up a vigorous but doomed defence. The British gunboat had been alerted by a telephone call from the British Consulate in time for the crew to get to battle stations. When a Japanese officer boarded the ship and demanded its surrender, Polkinghorn responded, ‘Get off my bloody ship!’ The Japanese disembarked and opened fire from batteries on shore and on nearby warships, whereupon the Peterel responded with her two machine guns. Meanwhile, secret code books were burnt in the boiler room. After suffering several direct hits, she exploded and keeled over. The order was given to abandon ship. Since the vessel’s motor launch had been hit, the men had to swim ashore, some of them being picked up by sympathetic Chinese in sampans. Six of the eighteen crew members on board were killed and all the others wounded (though the Japanese later announced, falsely, that no British sailors had been killed). Most of the survivors were captured by the Japanese. Three of the Peterel’s crew were already ashore at the time of the attack; two were soon arrested by the Japanese but one, Petty Officer James Cuming, a radio operator, remained at large. In response to Japanese pressure, the head of the British Resident’s Association, Hugh Collar, sent word to Cuming that, if he surrendered, he (Collar) would ‘accept responsibility towards His Majesty’s Government’ – an extraordinary arrogation of authority by a civilian. Cuming, however, ignored the appeal and remained underground in Shanghai under the alias ‘Mr Trees’. As a cover, the story was spread that ‘Mr Trees’ had escaped to Chungking. During the next four years of occupation Cuming eluded capture, made contact with the Chinese resistance and was able to put his radio expertise to service for the Allied cause. Meanwhile, Sumaire, Pick and their friends adapted happily to the new order. The various enterprises of Sumaire’s friend Dr von Miorini prospered greatly during the war. He built up a stock of gold bars – the most reliable long-term investment at the time. In 1943, however, Miorini came under suspicion among his Axis contacts of furnishing information to the Chinese nationalists. In June 1944 he died suddenly in the Paulus Hospital in Shanghai. An autopsy was performed by Dr Robert Neumann, a German pathologist, known (by reason of his earlier war service) as ‘the butcher of Buchenwald’. A macabre coincidence that subsequently came to light was that at the time of his death Miorini had been working on a book about Chinese poisons. Inevitably the suspicion arose that he had been murdered by the Shanghai Gestapo. His hoard of gold bars disappeared for ever. Another member of the circle, ‘Dr’ Hermann Erben, served the Axis cause more consistently. He volunteered to be interned in a detention camp among American civilians. As a result, he spent more than two years in the Pootung camp, as an undercover informer for the Japanese Gendarmerie. Shanghai could boast few more self-sacrificing records of foreign collaboration than Erben’s incarceration for the Axis cause. ‘Captain Pick’, who had been sentenced to a long gaol term for murder just a month before the Japanese onslaught, was quickly released and appointed adviser to Captain Otani in the foreign affairs section of the Japanese Naval Intelligence Bureau. For the next three-and-a-half years he exploited this position to establish a veritable reign of terror over the foreign residents of Shanghai. In April 1943 a kind of dynastic union was formed between the Pick and Sumaire circles when the ‘princess’ married a Pick gang member, the Japanese playboy Takami Morihiko. ‘Mori’ to his friends, Takami was an American as well as a Japanese citizen. Sumaire was technically guilty of bigamy since she had never divorced her Indian husband. Like his wife, Takami had a weakness for spurious titles: he called himself a ‘count’, though he was in fact the son of a Japanese-American doctor in New York. The wedding, a ‘swank ceremony’ at the Park Hotel in Shanghai, was played up as a sign of Indo-Japanese amity. Guests included German, Japanese, White Russian and Chinese puppet officials. But the marriage did not last long. A few weeks later Takami set out for the Philippines with other members of the Pick gang on a mission for the Japanese. Sumaire was glad to see the back of him since she had discovered he had long been enjoying an affair with Marquita Kwong, mistress of a Chinese-American collaborationist broadcaster. During Takami’s absence, Sumaire received a stipend from the Japanese Navy Office. The exact nature of the services she performed in return remain unclear. But as the war drew to a close, she evidently sensed a shift in the political wind. By early 1945 she was reported to have taken up with a Free-French journalist, Roger Pierrard. Liberation did not come to Shanghai until September 7th, 1945. The Shanghai underworld once again adjusted quickly to the new situation. The guest list for Sumaire’s cocktail parties now included American officers and immigration officials. She claimed that she had been imprisoned and maltreated by the Japanese. In a long maudlin letter to her kinsman, the young Maharajah of Patiala (heir to her putative father – or uncle), she lamented her fate and appealed for money to enable her to ‘pay back my debts of honour and get out of this miserable city of Shanghai’. She was last heard of in late 1946 when she was said to be planning to marry an American ex-army officer and hoping to move with him to America. Pick, meanwhile, had fled to Japan in the dying days of the war. His former employer, Captain Otani, gave him a million yen from confidential navy ministry funds and encouraged him to open a Russian night club in Tokyo. Instead, Pick presented himself to the American occupation authorities to whom he betrayed Otani. In an astonishing coda to his chameleonic career, Pick offered to place his unrivalled intelligence experience at the disposal of the United States. He was returned to Shanghai and promptly imprisoned by the Chinese nationalists. But after a short time he was freed at the instigation of the American Counter-Intelligence Corps which paid the necessary ‘squeeze’ to the Chinese authorities to secure his release. In 1949, on the eve of the occupation of Shanghai by the Communists, Pick escaped to Taiwan where he tried to sell his services anew as an expert on Communism. He soon fell foul of his new employers and was last heard of in a prison in Taipeh. These freelance foreign agents in Shanghai did not, of course, affect the course of the war there in any significant way. But their activities on behalf of the Axis powers were more than just a colourful sideshow. The Japanese depended heavily on foreign helpers in capturing and holding the city’s foreign concessions. Pick, Sumaire, Miorini, Erben and their like provided intelligence about the expatriate communities, information on British and American business interests, as well as diplomatic and service officers’ gossip that the Japanese used to good effect. Before December 1941 such assistance helped them seal their grip on the city. And for the ensuing four dark years of occupation it reinforced their stranglehold on the greatest prize of the war in the Far East. END Testimony Of Jeanne De Mohrenschildt The testimony of Jeanne De Mohrenschildt was taken at 4:45 p.m. on April 23, 1964, at 200 Maryland Avenue NE., Washington, D.C., by Mr. Albert E. Jenner, Jr., assistant counsel of the President's Commission. Mr. JENNER. Do you solemnly swear to tell the truth, and nothing but the truth, in the course of your deposition which I am about to take? Mrs. De MOHRENSCHILDT. Yes. Mr. JENNER. You are Mrs. George S. De Mohrenschildt? Mrs. De MOHRENSCHILDT. Why "S"? The "S" doesn't belong there at all. Mr. JENNER. Well, he acknowledged that it does. Mrs. De MOHRENSCHILDT. S? Mr. JENNER. Yes. Sergei. Mrs. De MOHRENSCHILDT. I have a brother by the same name Sergei, and he had a son by the name Sergei. Maybe he wants to add the letter to our name. Mr. JENNER. No. It shows in the records for many, many years. Mrs. De MOHRENSCHILDT. I never knew that. Sergei is his father's name-- that is what it is. Mr. JENNER. You have a brother whose name is Sergei, do you not? Mrs. De MOHRENSCHILDT. Yes. Mr. JENNER. Sergei Michail Fomenko. Give me your full maiden name. Your name as you were born and given to you by your parents. Mrs. De MOHRENSCHILDT. The first name will be Eugenia. Mr. JENNER. And---- Mrs. De MOHRENSCHILDT. I have no middle name. Just Fomenko. Mr. JENNER. Now, your mother's name was Tatiana? Mrs. De MOHRENSCHILDT. Tatiana. My father, Michail. Mr. JENNER. And your father was Michail L.? Mrs. De MOHRENSCHILDT. Yes. That is for--his father was Lev. Mr. JENNER. You were born in China? Mrs. De MOHRENSCHILDT. Yes. Mr. JENNER. Our information is it was at Harbin. Mrs. De MOHRENSCHILDT. That is right. Mr. JENNER. What is the nearest town? Mrs. De MOHRENSCHILDT. Nearest town to what? Mr. JENNER. Harbin. Mrs. De MOHRENSCHILDT. I would not--I cannot say. Mr. JENNER. What part of China? Mrs. De MOHRENSCHILDT. It is Manchuria. The northern part of China, close to the Siberian border. Mr. JENNER. You mean the Russian-Chinese border? Mrs. De MOHRENSCHILDT. Yes. Mr. JENNER. Do you have a sister? Mrs. De MOHRENSCHILDT. From what I recall, we had a--we had three portraits in the house, of children--my portrait, my brother's portrait, and there was a portrait of a little girl. And the portrait--she was about 3 or 4 years old. I don't know how, where did they get that idea, or was I actually told--but she is supposed to be my half-sister--Alexandria her name was supposed to be. And I think my father was married before he married my mother, but, you know, they don't tell much to children, and we never asked anything. We have never had any curiosity about it. Mr. JENNER. You are a naturalized citizen of this Nation, are you not? Mrs. De MOHRENSCHILDT. Yes. Mr. JENNER. Were you naturalized on April 6, 1936? Mrs. De MOHRENSCHILDT. No--couldn't. I came here in 1938. How could you possibly get that? Mr. JENNER. All right. I am misadvised. I was looking at the wrong thing. You were naturalized when? Mrs. De MOHRENSCHILDT. I believe it was 1945, but I cannot be absolutely sure. I have my papers in the hotel. 1944 or 1945, maybe it is 1944. If you want the exact date, I can easily get it for you. Do you actually have information, naturalized in 1936? Mr. JENNER. No, I don't. I have your immigration record here. I will find it in a moment. You became a U.S. citizen in proceedings in the U.S. district court, in New York City, February 28, 1945. Mrs. De MOHRENSCHILDT. 1945. Mr. JENNER. Were you born on May 5, 1914? Mrs. De MOHRENSCHILDT. Right. Mr. JENNER. Your parents, were they Russian citizens? Mrs. De MOHRENSCHILDT. My father took a Chinese passport, and I cannot tell you whether he already had it when I was horn, or whether he took one later. But I believe he took one later. He took probably one later, when they sold the railroad to the Reds, you know. That is when he took the Chinese passport. Mr. JENNER. He was born in Russia? Mrs. De MOHRENSCHILDT. Yes. Mr. JENNER. And your mother was born in Russia? Mrs. De MOHRENSCHILDT. To my knowledge, yes. They were living a few years in China before I was born. NO TITLE pg 29 Found in: FBI - HSCA Subject File: Edward P. Despite the more than 150 boxes of Gayn’s correspondence, diaries, and published works at the Thomas Fisher Rare Books Library, there semmed to be vast gaps in his history— particularly about his 1930’s years in Shanghai, and the 1962-63 period.....Since FBI files leave little doubt that Gayn was working for the Soviet’s at the time, the question is whether he might have kept his freedom in return for serving as a “double agent” at some point in the future.... What intrigued me most was a trip Gayn had made to Mexico City and Cuba in January-February 1963. Nagell was on record as saying that he himself had been to Mexico City many times between September 19623 and September 1963. But if the two men had rendezvoused in either place there was no record of it. All that was clear was Gayn’s interest in the factional struggle within the Communist Party in Mexico City. 15 In his September 1963 letter to the FBI in which he disclosed the plans for the Kennedy assassination Nagell signed it with the name Joseph Kramer a pseudonym for Mark Julius Gayn. Decades later the argument that Gayn was a double agent seems extremely open to question. New York Times, The (NY) - December 24, 1981 Deceased Name: MARK J. GAYN , 72, JOURNALIST SPECIALIST ON FOREIGN AFFAIRS Mark J. Gayn, a Canadian journalist who wrote extensively on foreign affairs, died of cancer Dec. 17 in Toronto. He was 72 years old. Mr. Gayn, who wrote for Newsweek, Time and The New York Times, was a member of the editorial board and the senior foreign affairs correspondent for The Toronto Star at the time of his death. Mr. Gayn, who was born to Russian parents in Manchuria in 1902, began his career in Shanghai in the 1930's as a stringer for The Washington Post and an editor for a Japanese wire service, Rengo. He wrote vividly of the firebombing of Tokyo by American planes during World War II.Arrested in U.S. In 1945, Mr. Gayn, who had angered some American officials by writing that the then Chinese-leader Chiang Kai-sshek was corrupt and did not enjoy popular support in China, was arrested in the United States and charged with conspiring to transmit infomration damaging to the national defense. He was quickly vindicated in the courts. Absorbed by a passionate interest in Asian society and politics, Mr. Gayn was among the first Western journalists to be admitted to China in the mid-1960's. His dispatches reflected his upbringing in China, against which he measured the country's accomplishments, and his invariably critical judgment of the political and intellectual regimentation of Chinese society. He was also one of the first correspondents allowed entry into North Korea, from where he filed ominous reports on repression under the man he called "the last Stalinist," President Kim Il Sung. Although he always wished to practice his craft in the United States, the refusal of the State Department to admit his wife Suzanne, an actress whom he met in Hungary in 1949, forced him to live in Canada. The State Department contended that she was a Communist. On his last trip to China last summer, Mr. Gayn retraced the ancient silk route traveled by Marco Polo in the 13th century through the Gobi Desert into China's heartland. Only a few months before he died he completed a sequel to his Japan Diary, an account of the Allied occupation of Japan, called New Japan Diary. It is scheduled to be published early next year. "As a newspaperman, I feel incensed every time I hear of violence done to the free press," he wrote several years ago. "But as a citizen of a democratic state I also see each such instance as a denial of my right to know, and therefore of my ability to understand the world in which we live." Mr. Gayn leaves his wife, and a brother Sam, who is in China. South Florida Sun-Sentinel (Fort Lauderdale, FL) - January 22, 2007 Deceased Name: FORMER U.S. SEN. GEORGE SMATHERS DIES AT 93 SOUTH FLORIDA DEMOCRAT LEFT OFFICE IN 1969 Former U.S. Sen. George A. Smathers, a dashing South Florida politician who forged friendships with presidents, waged war against communism, resisted civil rights legislation and was an early voice cautioning of Fidel Castro's rise to power in Cuba, died Saturday. He was 93. The Democrat, who served two terms in the U.S. House and three in the Senate, had a stroke Monday, said his son, Bruce. He lived in Indian Creek Village, an island community outside Miami. Sen. Smathers was among a group of congressmen -- along with John F. Kennedy and Richard M. Nixon -- who arrived on Capitol Hill in the late 1940s with a worldliness that few before them brought. Shaped by World War II duty in the Marines, Sen. Smathers used his more than two decades in Washington to focus on international issues and fight the spread of communism. The senator was a political force who managed to unseat familiar faces, attract the ears of the powerful and stake out a place as a moderate. But by the time Sen. Smathers left office in 1969 -- at his own choosing -- some dismissed his legislative achievements as much less impressive than his Rolodex. Former U.S. Rep. Clay Shaw of Fort Lauderdale knew Sen. Smathers only casually but said he helped the state and nation through turbulent times. "I think George Smathers did a great job for the state of Florida," Shaw, a Republican, said. "I would have to guess if he were to enter politics today that he would be a Republican." Charming and 6-foot-2, so dapper in his tailored suits that his opponents took to calling him "Gorgeous George," Sen. Smathers seemed to win friends wherever he went. At Kennedy's wedding rehearsal dinner, Sen. Smathers spoke on behalf of the groom. When Lyndon Johnson suffered his first heart attack, Sen. Smathers was at his side. And when Nixon sought a refuge from the White House, it was Sen. Smathers who sold him his Key Biscayne home. Like many other Southern Democrats, Sen. Smathers coddled segregationist white voters. He supported voting rights for blacks but sought to weaken other equal rights measures or opposed them, as he did with the Civil Rights Act of 1964. He said such matters were better left in the hands of the people. "I don't like bigotry and intolerance," he said, according to a 1999 biography. "But they do exist and I don't think you're going to get them out by passing laws." He opposed Thurgood Marshall's nomination to the Supreme Court. He called the Brown vs. Board of Education decision a "clear abuse of judicial power." And when the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. was jailed in St. Augustine, Sen. Smathers offered to pay King's bail, but only if he left the state. While such positions led some to call Sen. Smathers a racist -- those who knew him insist he was simply trying to keep his job -- his expertise on Latin America made him an early advocate for the people of that region, if for nothing more than to quash communism's expansion. Sen. Smathers pushed the Alliance for Progress, which pumped billions of dollars in additional aid to the region, and was among the earliest and loudest voices cautioning of Castro's communist leanings, urging a hard-line approach to Cuba and a total embargo. "We have a moral as well as a legal responsibility to pursue a policy that will lead to Castro's downfall," he once said. George Armistead Smathers was born Nov. 13, 1913, in Atlantic City, N.J., son of a federal judge. His family moved to Miami when he was 6. He attended Miami Senior High School, where he ran for student body president and, like every other election he entered, won. After earning undergraduate and law degrees from the University of Florida, Sen. Smathers was an assistant U.S. district attorney, then entered the Marines. After his discharge, he unseated a four-term congressman in 1946. His Senate race four years later was among the most contentious in Florida's history. The congressman badgered incumbent Sen. Claude Pepper on his support of civil rights and labeled him a communist sympathizer. But his most celebrated remarks -- innocuous declarations intended to appear scandalous to less educated audiences -- might have never been uttered. "Do you know that Claude Pepper is known all over Washington as a shameless extrovert?" Sen. Smathers was quoted as saying. "Not only that, but this man is reliably reported to practice nepotism with his sister-in-law and he has a sister who was once a thespian in wicked New York. Worst of all, it is an established fact that Sen. Pepper, before his marriage, habitually practiced celibacy." Sen. Smathers denied ever making those remarks. He offered a $10,000 reward to anyone who could prove he did, but no one could. Sen. Smathers helped pass bills to create Medicare, the Small Business Administration and Everglades National Park. He pushed for federal holidays to be moved to Mondays, essentially creating the modern three-day weekend. After leaving office in 1969, he made a fortune through lobbying and varied business ventures. He gave tens of millions of dollars to his alma mater, the University of Florida, and to the University of Miami. Sen. Smathers' first marriage, to the former Rosemary Townley, ended in divorce; she died in 2002. He is survived by his second wife, the former Carolyn Hyder, to whom he had been married since the early 1970s; his son Bruce, a former Florida secretary of state who lives in Jacksonville; son John, of Arlington, Va.; a sister, Virginia Myers, of Coral Gables; and three grandchildren. A funeral service is scheduled for Jan. 29 at the Church by the Sea in Bal Harbour. Instead of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to the Fisher House Foundation, which provides support to U.S. military personnel and their families. Staff Writer Brian Haas contributed to this report. I don't believe Smathers was JFK's close friend, literally....... I think he was another backstabber......FWIW Re Adamson's suspicion of Hoch....... Casting stones at other researchers is a lose/lose proposition... Unless you have an airtight case; a persons focus should be on getting to the center of the nexus of the assassination, not creating or embellishing circumstances that seem odd Does that mean blindly trust everybody's research...No It means knowing your subject matter so well that, that sort of thing is not a problem to the individual doing research.

The following is a condensed version of a page found at this link.: http://forum.prisonp...?topic=135734.0 After I skimmed the information excerpted in this last quote box of this post, is it any wonder the name Col. Jose A. Rivera, popped into my head? Rivera was stationed at the US Army Medical Center in San Antonio from 1954 to 1958. More than of passing interest, I would hope SLICK, THOMAS BAKER (1883-1930) A legendary Oklahoma oilman, Tom Slick became one of the largest independent oil producers in the nation. His business ventures also included railroad building, town site development, and plantation ownership. Known for honesty in his business dealings, devoted to family and friends, and intensely private, he was born Thomas Baker Slick on October 12, 1883, in Shippenville, Pennsylvania, to Johnson M. and Mary A. Baker Slick. Tom Slick's home environment and upbringing in Clarion, Pennsylvania, lead him naturally to the oil-field life. Following his father and brother westward into the oil business, he began his career in Tryon, Oklahoma, in 1904. Working as a leaser, he received a 25 percent share of all the leases he acquired. His first drilling venture proved unsuccessful, but with the intense determination that was his hallmark he vowed to become a millionaire in the oil fields of Oklahoma, a goal he achieved many times over. After he had drilled a series of dry holes, his enormously successful Wheeler Number One well in the Cushing Field, made public in April 1912, thrust him into prominence and eventually earned him the name "King of the Wildcatters." Charles B. Shaffer, and Slick's longtime partner B. B. Jones, along with Charles J. Wrightsman, shared in this success and formed Hi-Grade Oil Company. Unfortunately, Slick and Shaffer ended their business and personal association in a disagreement over leases. In 1913 Slick sold his part of Hi-Grade to Prairie Oil and Gas Company, earning him a fourth of the million-dollar sale. But this was just a portion of all his holdings in the Cushing Field, and by 1914 his leases had made him a multimillionaire. A cycle of overworking, selling his holdings, retiring, and then coming back full force into the oil business would repeat throughout his life. On June 21, 1915, he married Berenice Frates, oldest child of Joseph A. and Lula M. Buck Frates. The Frates were a well-known family in the railroad business. Slick's subsequent partnership with his father-in-law made them major players in the transportation industry, with Slick providing the financial backing and Frates the expertise. They also collaborated to develop oil boomtowns. Under the auspices of the Slick Townsite Company and the Oklahoma Southwestern Railway (OSWR) they created the towns of Slick and Nuyaka, located between Bristow and Okmulgee, Oklahoma. Between 1915 and 1920 Tom Slick took time out to build a family of three children and enjoy his home life. His children were Thomas Bernard, Betty, and Earl Frates. Thomas Slick, Jr. would later become an adventurer and oilman in his own right and go in search of the yeti (abominable snowman). In the 1920s Slick reentered the oil business with a vengeance, developing or discovering six major pools in the Mid-Continent Region within the next five years. During this period of expansion he managed his oil concerns with three important staff, Charles F. Urschel, Ernest E. Kirkpatrick and James Huffman. In 1923 Slick began ventures in central Oklahoma's Greater Seminole Field. He also accumulated further holdings in Kansas with partners Ralph Pryor and Floyd Lockhart and in 1929 acquired leases in the Oklahoma City Field. Due to his experiences of overproduction and waste in the Kansas and Oklahoma fields, Tom Slick realized the need for conservation measures for his industry, and he advocated unitization and well spacing. Years of hard work took their toll, and Slick died on August 16, 1930, from a massive stroke following surgery. Many grieved his passing, and on August 18, 1930, oil derricks in the Oklahoma City Field stood silent for one hour in tribute. Political and legal wrangling among the family trustees and the States of Oklahoma and Pennsylvania over Slick's residency and valuation of his estate followed his death. Slick's sister, Flored Urschel, died in 1931, and Charles F. Urschel married Tom's widow, Berenice. SEE ALSO: PETROLEUM, URSCHEL KIDNAPPING. BIBLIOGRAPHY: Estate of Thomas B. The former Los Angeles County police detective who gained fame and notoriety in the O.J. Simpson murder trial sifts through the mountain of evidence from the 1963 assassination of President John F. Kennedy, and comes up with a new take on the events. Fuhrman is procedural and skeptical as he shares his professional insights on evidence and forensics, disposes quickly of some elaborate theories, and probes into new directions. The former LAPD detective and best-selling author of Murder in Greenwich takes his own look at the 1963 assassination of President John F. Kennedy, re-examining the hard evidence of the crime and the testimony of hundreds of witnesses to cut through the myths and misinformation about the murder. James Kelley Lowe advised the informant that he was a former intelligence officer in the U S Air Force and that he and his wife met with Lee Harvey Oswald and Jack Ruby at Ruby's place of business some six to eight weeks prior to the assassination of President Kennedy. On August 31, 1965 Tom Taylor, Identification Bureau, Fort Worth Police Department, Fort Worth, advised that on August 8, 1965 Lowe had been arrested and subsequently charged with illegal possession of dangerous drugs. http://www.maryferre...336&relPageId=4 There was another Lowe in Dallas who is worth mentioning LOWE, JOHN E., JR. Sources: Dallas Times Herald, 4/11/70 Mary's Comments: Served as supervisor of the U.S. Marshal's office in Dallas from 1960 until 1970. The following letter has been cited in JFK documents but I am unclear as to whether it has ever been posted in its entirety. This copy was taken from one of the 11 Volume's of Oswald's Best Friend: The George DeMohrenschildt Story For background see http://www.assassina...com/shack3g.htm Colonel Howard Burris to Walter Jenkins April 23, 1963 Walter: It is somewhat distressing to be caught in the dilemma between the desire and the apparent necessity on the one hand to perform a function and service - - - and to do it efficiently and well - - and on the other hand to observe physical conditions which are often exclusive. First of all let me say that I have absolutely no reservations about working in the Pentagon. I worked there almost ten years before the present activity. But I hasten to add that working principally (and to an extent even partially) in the Pentagon greatly limits the nature and scope of many functions which are essential. For example, there is a restricted communications center and library in the Executive Office Building which provides a continuous flow of incoming and outgoing State, Defense, USIA and other departmental policies, messages, and materials. The volume is enormous and although the staff provides an initial screening and distribution to me, and to members of the White House Staff as you may have noted, a considerable amount of time is required at different times each day just to keep abreast. Much is background; occasionally it is specific and urgent. But in this area I have attempted - - in accordance with Mr. Johnson's requests - - to trouble him only with significant events, and then in accurate, capsulized form and in proper perspective (which only background study can provide). Neverthe- less, this particular concentration of information and service is not avail- able anywhere else in Washington. To be sure, the various departments all have their inputs but the lifetime of no man would permit completing the daily rounds and going through each department's unscreened output. Intelligence has a similar, though much less comprehensive operation in EOB. However, that office handles all our sensitive documents. You are familiar with the daily meetings with State, Defense, CIA, and others on a less frequent basis. They are held with representatives who visit the area to brief various White House officials. For example, I am furnished the same documents and background each morning which is fur- nished Bundy. Similarly, policy papers are delivered on an irregular basis. Yes, I realize that the substance of or basis for this activity is secondary to other considerations, But here, I would like to go on record in emphasis- ing the importance of the Vice-President keeping himself informed to the maximum extent possible in as many areas as possible in order that he may intelligently contribute to policy making whenever he can; that he may like- wise be broadly informed in his contacts and public utterances; and that he be more nearly prepared to assume the reins of government in case he is called upon to do so. Back to the basic issue: my assignment. You may recall my memo of March 1, 1961 on the occasion of my return to the Air Force after only a couple of months' duty with the office. When I was later recalled to perform certain functions, it was stipulated that I would not be assigned to the office of the Vice-President. Since that day - - for more than two years - - I have remained assigned to the Pentagon, specifically to the Office of the Director of Plans for the Air Force. I have cited this fact to you on several occasions. My records are kept in that office, to include leave, pay administration and all. General Burchinal even makes out my efficiency reports (but requests a statement from you on this facet of my existence). That office issues my travel orders and pays my per diem when I perform official acts to the further- ance of my Air Force background, such as the recent West Coast visit for presentations on Dynasoar, heavy military transport, and supersonic trans- port. My secretary accompanies me to and from the Pentagon, and she is paid and administered to in the same fashion as I. My assigned office is Room 3B932; my telephone number is 59000. I adhere to the present schedule by traveling about in my own car, not relying at all upon the auto assigned to the Vice President's office. I do not even charge my official calls to the Vice President's account- In case of error in billing I pay for the call personally. It is inappropriate for me to engage in a broad comparison of Colonel Jackson and myself - - not to mention my displeasure in doing so. But since you cited the fact that he is not assigned to the Vice President's office, I must offer this rejoinder that I was not assigned to the office long before he was not assigned! In the years of this perplexing status, the suggestion was twice made that my assignment be made to Gen. McHugh's office, but I expressed the preference that it remain as it is. One of these occasions cropped up - - - during an interregnum in this assignment - - when I received inquiries about a permanent assignment over there. All this could have more simply been said - - if at all - - that doing things Roman style, or things done by halves, are unexpectedly difficult and never quite right - - to say nothing on the other hand about being pleasant, efficient, challenging and mutually rewarding. I would take it that surely the work, even more of it, should and must be done. Although I'm not assigned to you're office, I still solicit your advice on how and where possible, my ill-defined functions could and should be carried out. In addition to the many projects and studies which I have presumptively undertaken, there are additionally an item or two which you have asked me to do. HLB
  24. Don, The fact that the interrogation sessions were unrecorded does not mean they can simply be ignored. The notes made come from four different sources: Fritz, SS Inspector Kelley, the postal inspector (Holmes), and FBI agents. Oswald's repeated denials that he killed JFK or Officer Tippit are recorded on multiple occasions and I believe them to be true. (I presume you would agree with that opinion). I personally believe that Oswald's statements about taking a bus, and then switching to a cab, are also true. I do not believe there is good reason to believe that multiple notetakers made up these statements. Apparently, you are willing to entertain such a hypothesis. When I first became interested in this case, and bought my set of the 26 volumes (this is May, 1965), I truly believed that Lee Oswald was what I then called a "Perry Mason defendant." In other words, Oswald was just an ordinary person—not much different from your or I—and who just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time, and was framed for a crime he did not commit. Consequently, and because of my belief that he was innocent, I cut him a lot of slack, and believed everything he said to be true—similar to a typical defendant in a Perry Mason mystery. As I studied the records more closely, it became clear that Oswald was not always telling the truth. This doesn't mean he killed anybody; but it means that, for one reason or another, he did not disclose everything he knew. If we understood all the details of Oswald's reality, it would be clear why he was not always telling the truth. I do not believe Oswald was telling the truth when he denied owning any weapons. I think one of the keys in researching the Kennedy assassination is understanding who is telling the truth, and who is not; and, if someone is lying, then just why they are lying (i.e., what is being hidden). As to DeMohrenschildt, I think he told the truth in his manuscript—but painted an unnecessarily negative picture of Oswald in his WC testimony. He apparently developed a very strong father-son bond with Oswald. His manuscript is a virtual valentine to Oswald, and is infused with guilt. Anyone who reads it closely can see that. Like it or not, Ruth Paine believed Oswald killed Kennedy. Much is made of the fact that so much of the "incriminating evidence" was found in Ruth Paine's garage. But Ruth Paine didn't put it there—Oswald did. (And that brings one back to the question of just what Oswald was up to in the weeks and months prior to the assassination.) Based on my own interviews and other information, I am persuaded that Ruth Paine had no knowledge that Lee Oswald had a rifle on the premises. As I stated earlier on this thread, I believe that Michael Paine did know about the rifle, but thought of Oswald as more or less a harmless somewhat academic revolutionary. Based on problems with Bledsoe's testimony (most of which can probably be attributed to her age), I see no reason to invoke an elaborate hypothesis involving a fabricated bus transfer (plus multiple Oswalds) and which eventually also leads to the necessity of subscribing to an auxiliary hypothesis that the statements made by Oswald at his interrogation, regarding his taking a bus and switching to a taxi, were all (also) fabricated. Such an unwieldy hypothesis is, imho, a thoroughly implausible way to explain the known facts. DSL; 3/26/11 10:30 PM PDT Los Angeles, CA Don, Have you read the DeMohrenschieldt manuscript (As published in the HSCA volumes)? As I mentioned previously, it is a virtual valentine to Oswald. Filled with compliments, admiration, even adulation, and pervaded with terrible guilt over what happened to Oswald. Whatever the circumstances of how these two came to meet, GDM obviously "bonded" with Oswald. He wrote that he wished his own children aspired to the high ideals exemplified by Oswald. (Most people who are suspicious of GDM seem to be unaware of this aspect of GDM, and what his manuscript says). You ask: "Do you really think that the friendship between the DeMohrenshildts and the Oswalds was natural and honest?" My answer is that I do not believe that George DeM ever revealed the truth about when and how he first came to meet Oswald. In other words, he never revealed his own "other agenda" or "hidden agenda." Was it related to the Kennedy assassination? (Yes, I believe it was, but I do not think that GDM had foreknowledge of the kennedy assassination; and, in fact, I think DeM was just as much of a dupe as was Oswald.) Keep in mind that DeM left the U.S. for Haiti in May or June, 1963; and in any event, did not see Oswald again after the mid-April meeting when he and his wife Jeanne dropped by with the Easter bunny present. So the notion that GDM was "running" Oswald was (and in fact is) a logistical impossibility. Ironically, HSCA General Counsel Robert Blakey was fully aware of the implications of the GDM manuscript, and tried to denigrate it in his book, THe Plot to Kill the President." published in March, 1981. Remember: one of the first things GDM's wife did after his (March, 1977) suicide was to see to it that that manuscript got to the HSCA. I think the proper analysis of GDM is one of the keys to this case and, many years back, spent beaucoup hours carefully going over all the GDM documents, and in fact received some 1,000 pages or more from the State Department under FOIA. I wonder how many people reading these boards realize that Oswald was actually visiting with, and probably spending nights with, GDM and his wife, in the fall of 1962. They were very close--and DeM was obviously very upset by the death of this young man who, his manuscript makes very clear, he greatly admired, and whom he viewed as a surrogate son. Simply going from the notion that GDM obviously had "intelligence ties" to the notion that he was a "bad" or "evil" person who was the master manipulator of Oswald is not only not warranted by the evidence but, in my opinion, is entirely false. Again, I say: Read his manuscript. There is no substitute for understanding GDM than reading this primary document--of several hundred pages--to acquire an understanding of who GDM (and his wife) were, the kind of friendship that developed between GDM and LHO, how they felt about the Oswalds, (GDM's negative opinion of Marina) etc. So. . when you ask" Do I think the "friendship" was "natural and honest," the answer is that George DeM became one of Lee Oswald's closest friends, up until the time GDM left for Haiti, but that nonetheless, we don't have the full picture because something has been hidden. I wonder if you are aware that Edward Epstein, one of the last people to see GDM just hours before he took his life, wrote (in Legend) that GDM had apparently decided to conceal the true circumstances of how he first came to know Oswald. I think that is a fair statement. And without that knowledge, a full understanding of what is being hidden cannot be understood. I hope to shed important light on this in my work. DSL 3/31/11; 2:40 AM Los Angeles, CA A few question for you, David. What do you make of this? Was it a coincidence that Albert E. Jenner, Jr. was appointed in the first place, and then chosen to draw DeMohrenschildt's testimony out of him? Read the rest of the post I excerpted in the quote box immediately above this sentence. David, where on earth do you come by the confidence it should require to post the opinions of DeMohrenschildt and about the WCR, for that matter, that you posted? All these years you've put into the study of the "investigation" of the murders of JFK and LHO, and yet it still seems you persist in the notion that despite the obvious evidence the WC was created and tasked to reach and report the official conclusions that both JFK and LHO were murdered by gunshot under the noses of armed government personal protection details, earnest researchers can rely on the exhibits and testimony in the volumes of the WCR. You somehow know what is reliable in the WCR and what isn't. Is it unfair to believe you do not accept that no reliable investigation could have taken place, since the WC was a commission created to present two lone nut shooters as the only culprits? I have been perusing some documents out of Bruce Campbell Adamson's 11 Volumes on George DeMohrenschildt, and chanced upon a fairly important genealogical chart which can [from what I can tell] be independently corroborated. The chart is of the descendants of Reverend Thomas Hooker cited as the founder of Hartford, Connecticut link is below http://www.kobobooks...JCCw/page1.html It is also very odd, depending on how looks at it the career of S. Walter Washington whom, is mentioned at length by Adamson, alleged to be a descendant of the Founding Father, as an integral link to the foreign policy apparatus in the Dmitri Von Mohrenschildt/Allen Dulles relationship.... See http://www.trumanlib...ashingtonsw.htm I was really disappointed in how Adamson's visit to the forum a few years back turned out, he had a great opportunity to share some of his research but caught the ire of several members because he plugged his books. I will say one thing which is meant as a honest appraisal of Adamson, his books have a lot of value, especially some of the correspondence, ie LBJ/Dulles and a lot more There is an April 23, 1963 letter he cites as being to Walter Jenkins from Colonel Howard Burris, that is of particular interest. And particularly interesting connections regarding the elder Tom Slick....... But I believe the best approach to JFK Research is keeping an eye on the big picture and not getting lost in a sea of information in one area.... After all these years if I had to cite one book I had to choose if I was stuck on a desert island it would be Noel Twyman's Bloody Treason. The only drawback is the fact Noel didn't have access to documents that hadn't been declassified at the time of his publication, which can be said about any JFK Book, his work is the ultimate example of keeping an eye on the big picture, as compared to some researchers who have a penchant for incriminating a particular individual. One other item.......the whole pattern for the last five decades of research has been skewed, in one manner to a great degree, in the sense that many who maintain an interest in the JFK assassination, associate a particular aspect of the assassination with an author or person instead of documents...... Example Adamson did an incredible amount of research into the history of the Dulles, DeMohrenschildt, AMCOMLIB ie Radio Liberty area, but leaves out other areas, which may or may not be integral to the overall picture, I cite Adamson just as an example, so the persons who just "keep up with the assassination cast of characters" will get burned out on hearing for the umpteenth hundred time about Angel and Leopoldo and different takes on who they were, again just citing an example...... The point being is, that instead of composing a meticulous evidentiary trail of fact, the persons who are trying to delve into and understand the deeper areas impressions are almost blinded by following opinions of various researchers in key areas, instead of letting the documents speak for themselves, which is why I have always been big on posting documents or excerpts of documents..... The fact that I have not written a book and am not a big name, seems to be a real issue for some here, but I have decided to keep on because the JFK assassination, is one of the most important issues of the 20th Century, and has a real impact on the hows and why's of how things are done in the 21st century.... At any rate Take the following document and read it and draw your own conclusions as to its importance...... HSCA Segregated CIA Collection, Box 2, 104-10048-10134 DOCUMENTS, CORRESPONDENCE AND MAPS WHICH WERE OBSERVED IN A BRIEFCASE WHICH WAS DETERMINED TO BELONG TO FRANK FIORINI http://www.maryferre....do?docId=39890 Tell me this guy wasn't in up to his neck.......but....that's just my opinion.
  25. Joan Mellen's book covers the Mary Sherman death in fairly great detail, it was discussed on the forum here on one of the posts, and the person of interest in her death was named Juan Valdez, Joan took a lot of ribbing about the name [ie Colombian coffee character], which I thought was pretty juvenile. I tend to agree with Stephen Roy regarding JVB I find it hard to believe she could have been as close to Oswald as she claims to be and there not be one scintilla of documentation in the files that even obliquely references her...... Painting oneself into the JFK Saga is not exactly an unheard of endeavor..... Ron Lewis is another person who comes to mind who may or may not be the real deal, although I watched a JFK Documentary, hosted by James Earl Jones where, if I recall correctly Marina Oswald seemed to make some comments that she remembered Ron Lewis, from New Orleans but I am relying on my memory of the show, which I have not seen in years. I know if Roy's project on Ferrie reaches publication, I would definitely be a buyer, Ferrie may not have been "one of history's most important individuals," but he is someone who knowing the details on helps understand the context of the assassination; at least as far as sifting the facts from the folklore.
