The massive search that ensued turned up no leads, and the plane, along with the bodies of Boggs and three others who died, remains hidden somewhere in the wilderness. Boggs -- who served on the Warren Commission, accused the FBI of tapping congressional phones, and called for J. Edgar Hoover's resignation -- was the majority leader of the U.S. House of Representatives. Seattle and the rest of the country were captivated as the government sent out dozens of planes and ships to find him, but search efforts failed. In the years that followed, conspiracy theories flourished, in part because of his connections to the Kennedy assassination and the FBI, and in part because no trace of the plane ever surfaced. To mark the anniversary of Boggs' disappearance, Seattle Weekly made Freedom of Information requests to eight government agencies and reviewed more than 1,500 pages of documents. While none of the records get us closer to knowing why and where Boggs' plane went down, they do paint a fuller picture of the his life before the crash - including an incident in which he was run off the road by an unknown driver in Washington, D.C., in 1970 - and unveil possible ties between the Nixon White House and an anonymous tipster who claimed to know where Boggs' plane crashed. Among the findings: - Amid hundreds of pages in Boggs' FBI file is a single sheet of information that has apparently never been reported. Around 11:30 p.m. on July 23, 1970, two years before he disappeared, Boggs was driving in Washington, D.C., when a late model Lincoln Continental forced him off the road. He gave chase and was able to take down a license plate number. No additional information is available in the file, and the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department, which investigated the incident, told the Weekly that it could not locate any relevant records. - Immediately after Boggs disappeared, the U.S. Coast Guard station in Long Beach, Calif., received a call from an individual who claimed to know where the plane crashed. The tipster said he had access to experimental electronic equipment, and he provided detailed directions to the wreck. The FBI apparently found him credible, with one agent, whose name is redacted, stating his opinion that the "source of aforementioned information is reliable." Though this tip has previously been reported, the Weekly uncovered new details on the tipster, who is described as a "white male, about thirty five, six foot three inches, two hundred and fifteen pounds, hair black, who apparently has injured left arm." He also appears to have served in the military. But the most interesting piece of information is the tipster's phone number, which was not redacted in the FBI file. The number, 378-5243, was provided by the Long Beach Coast Guard station. Since no area code was specified, the tipster presumably had the same one as the station, "213." A hunt for information on the number (213) 378-5243 turns up a solitary reference in an obscure congressional document from 1974. In that record, a report on a congressional hearing that examined the possibility of amending the Constitution to protect unborn children, the number is listed as belonging to Right to Life, an anti-abortion group founded in 1969. Right to Life, which claimed to be America's first pro-life organization, provided an address in Palos Verdes Estates, Calif. Interestingly enough, one of the 12 founders of Right to Life was James Francis McIntyre, the Catholic Archbishop of Los Angeles from 1948-70, who knew President Richard Nixon. Seattle Weekly was unable to track down an old phone book to determine whether the organization had the same number in 1972, when Boggs disappeared, as it did in 1974, when it surfaced in the congressional report. But if the number was the same, why would someone associated with an pro-life organization, founded in part by a powerful bishop connected to President Nixon, claim to have inside knowledge on the disappearance on an influential Democratic congressman? The FBI file shows that agents who interviewed the tipster were advised "that should [they] believe [redacted] are involved in a covert type operation, then it should be suggested to them that if they doubted the seriousness of the matter they should contact their 'principals' for further advice." Essentially, the FBI directed its agents to evaluate whether they thought the source was a spy. Once interviewed, the tipster, according to the report, "appeared rational, extremely intelligent, but somewhat strange." The FBI file sheds no additional light on his identity. - In the days that followed Boggs' disappearance, several independent ham radio operators in Northern California said they spoke with or heard a transmission from someone on the plane after it crashed, who told them that there were survivors. - The day after Boggs vanished, according to the FBI file, a search plane picked up a signal "believed to be that of a crash locator beacon for approximately 40 minutes some distance from Juneau, however, search planes were unable to pinpoint the source of the signal." In addition to Boggs (whose daughter is journalist Cokie Roberts), three others disappeared: Nick Begich, the father of current U.S. Sen. Mark Begich; Russell Brown, an aide to Begich; and Don Jonz, the plane's pilot. Four decades after the plane vanished, plenty of questions remain: Did the mysterious tipster have accurate information on the crash? Did the ham radio operators really talk with survivors? Circuit ruled. Former Washington Post reporter Jefferson Morley has spent years investigating a potential link between a deceased CIA officer and accused Kennedy assassin Lee Harvey Oswald. Morley asked for records on George Joannides, the chief of psychological warfare operations in the CIA's Miami station at the time of the assassination. On the his website jfkfacts.com, Morley writes that Joannides controlled the Revolutionary Cuban Student Directorate, also known as the DRE, "one of the largest and most effective anti-Castro groups in the United States." He claims Joannides gave the group up to $25,000 a month and insisted the members "submit to CIA discipline." Members of the Directorate had an allegedly contentious relationship with Oswald, an ex-Marine who idolized Castro. They confronted Oswald on a street corner, "stared him down in a courtroom," challenged him to a radio debate and called on Congress to investigate him, Morley claims. Unsure of what to make of Joannides-DRE-Oswald connection, Morley asked for Joannides' personnel file. He says the CIA gave him 150 pages of "heavily redacted and obviously incomplete records." The CIA claimed it withheld information on privacy grounds or because it couldn't find the requested files. But in 2007, the D.C. Circuit ordered the CIA to look again. "Despite its burden to show that withholding is necessary, the CIA has failed even to articulate the privacy interests in the records, let alone demonstrate that such privacy interests meet the standard for an agency's withholding" under the exemption, the court wrote. The agency has to show that disclosure would constitute a "clearly unwarranted" invasion of personal privacy. The CIA eventually turned over several hundred documents, including travel records and a photograph, the value of which is "at best unclear," the D.C. Circuit said Friday. According to Morley, the records revealed that Joannides received a Career Intelligence Medal just two years after "stonewalling congressional investigators about what he knew of contacts in 1963 between accused assassin Lee Oswald and CIA-funded anti-Castro exiles in New Orleans." Morley sought attorney's fees as the prevailing party in the litigation, but a federal judge denied him, finding that Morley's efforts "yield little, if any, public benefit." On appeal, the D.C. Circuit agreed that "the released documents appear to reveal little, if anything, about President Kennedy's assassination." However, it said the court's job was not to evaluate the public value of the information received, but the potential value of what documents Morley sought. "Morley's request had potential public value. He has proffered - and the CIA has not disputed - that Joannides served as the CIA case officer for a Cuban group, the DRE, with whose officers Oswald was in contact prior to the assassination. Travel records showing a very close match between Joannides's and Oswald's times in New Orleans might, for example, have (marginally) supported one of the hypotheses swirling around the assassination,"U.S. Circuit Judge Stephen Williams said, writing for the three-judge panel. It was therefore plausible that Morley's documents request could have generated useful new information on Kennedy's assassination, "an event with few rivals in national trauma in the array of passionately held conflicting explanations," Williams said. Lot #16 – 1961 Lee Harvey Oswald Letter to his Mother from Soviet Union – This three-page hand written letter from Oswald to his mother in Texas dates from January 2, 1962. In the letter Oswald asks his mother to help secure visas for him and his wife to return to the U.S. Lot #17: Key from Cell Block F of the Dallas City Jail that housed both Oswald and Jack Ruby – The key shows great use and has taken on a brownish-gold patina with age. It is mounted alongside a color photo of cell F-2 and a black and white 8×10 of Dallas Assistant Jailer Henry Ellison who[se] job it was to carry this key. Ellison’s signed letter describing the provenance and significance of the key is mounted alongside the other artifacts. Lot #18 – Original Keys to the Presidential Limousine in which JFK was assassinated in. The two metal keys are just over two inches long and are embossed with the Lincoln Motor Company’s logo. The keys are mounted with a color 8×10 photograph of the car and its occupants on that fateful day in Dallas. Comes with a provenance in the form of a notarized statement from R. Steven Turner that reads: “This is an original set of keys to the Presidential limousine (SS-100-X) that President John F. Kennedy rode in on November 22, 1963. I obtained them from the Secret Service motor pool, while I was a criminal investigator with the Department of Justice.” Also comes with a Certificate of Authenticity from Erik L. Dorr of the Gettysburg Museum of History. Lot #19 – Oswald Handcuff Key – The key is mounted along with a dramatic black and white 8×10 of Oswald in the handcuffs this key unlocked and a copy of Assistant Jailer Henry Ellison’s Dallas Police identity card. Also mounted is a 1998 signed letter from Ellison that states in part “This was my personal handcuff key that I used to unlock the handcuffs that were holding Lee Harvey Oswald when he arrived at the Dallas City Jail on the fifth floor November 22, 1963…I was on duty working as an assistant Jailer of the Service Division of the Dallas Police Department. Lee Harvey Oswald was captured at the Texas Theatre, handcuffed and transferred to the Dallas City Jail. Lot #20 – JFK Assassination Artifact Collection — This unique five item collection of historical artifacts relating to the assassination of President John F. Kennedy is diverse. Two pieces relate to the President: a lock of about ten strands of the President’s hair which was cut at the home of Kennedy’s brother-in-law Peter Lawford in 1963 and a small leather swatch of bloodstained leather cut from the rear seat of the limousine the President was riding in when he was assassinated. Oswald is represented by a 4 1/4″ x 6″ registered letter envelope he sent from Minsk to his mother in Texas. Jack Ruby is represented by a 1951 dated check from one of his nightclubs, the “Silver Spur”. The lot also includes a type written and signed document from Gerald Ford, member of the Warren Commission. This display comes with notarized letter from barber Harry Gelbart attesting to the provenance of the President’s hair and various articles featuring him as a celebrity stylist. The bloodstained leather swatch is accompanied by documentation from F. Vaughn Ferguson, Technical Service Representative at the White House and a Certificate of Authenticity from John Reznikoff of University Archives. Lot #21 – Bullet and Spent Cartridge from the Gun used by Ruby to Shoot Oswald – This display features a bullet fired from the revolver Ruby used to change the course of history. The bullet and spent shell cartridge are mounted together with a color photo of Ruby’s Colt Cobra and a black and white 8×10 copy of the infamous shooting below the Dallas Police Headquarters. The photo has been signed in blue ballpoint by two of the men in the picture, Detective James Leavelle who was handcuffed to Oswald and L.C. Graves who disarmed Ruby after the shooting. From my "Men of Courage" homepages website, page 6, with respect to the 22NOV63 timing of the emergency response ambulance into and out of Dealey Plaza to help the man who exhibited the seizures near the southwest corner of Houston and Elm streets.... Mr. AUBREY "Al" LEE RIKE (born 1937, passed-on 2010) was a Dallas ambulance driver who was summoned to Dealey Plaza 11-22-63 to transport a man (said to be JERRY BOYD BELKNAP: born 1940, passed-on 1985) who had publicly exhibited seizures near the Houston and Elm streets intersection southwest corner, across the intersection, oppositely away from the Texas School Book Depository and Dal-Tex buildings. That man's seizures started minutes before the President was scheduled to enter the kill zone. In 1992 Mr. RIKE spoke at the "Assassination Symposium about Kennedy" (A.S.K.) and detailed that he knew of, at least, 8 phony telephone calls that had each requested an ambulance go to Dealey Plaza in the 3 weeks leading up to the assassination…… RIKE suggested that the phony telephone calls were made with the deliberate purposes to determine exactly how much time it took an ambulance to reach Dealey Plaza after being called...... RIKE further strongly suggested that another purpose of the phony calls was to try to time the assassination shots to occur simultaneously as when the loud siren of his ambulance was still within hearing distance of Dealey Plaza, so to try and confuse witnesses and/or drown out the assassination shots noises. Should have tried to find + interview him before 2007). That man in CROFT is noticeably larger than the man + woman sitting next to him on that North Pergola eastern sidewalk wall.... .... The basic outline of the piece is as follows: 1. Dallas in 1963 was full of crazy right-wingers; 2. These people had guns; 3. John F. Kennedy was shot in Dallas in 1963; 4. Barack Obama likewise has many right-wingers who oppose him; therefore 5. It’s only a matter of time before one of them shoots him. The baseless appeal to sensationalism and emotionalism is the primary (and usually only) tool in the gun control advocate’s toolbox. To that end, I have to admit that this is well played on Salon’s part; every reasonable person of all political stripes in America is legitimately terrified at the prospect of President Joe Biden. The problem (as always, when dealing with a gun control advocate) is that reason, logic and history demand a completely opposite conclusion. Let us grant for just a moment that Dallas in 1963 was full of various fringe right-leaning groups that were well armed. I don’t know; it might or might not be true. I’m not a Dallas historian and it’s not really relevant to the point of this post. The point is that factually, John F. Kennedy was killed by an avowed communist because of that communist’s belief that Kennedy was too tough on commies. These are not facts that are in reasonable dispute. Even if you are one of the grassy knoll people you have to concede Lee Harvey Oswald’s place as at least one of the shooters which means that, without a doubt, Kennedy was killed by left-wing extremists not right-wing extremists. In an especially delicious bit of irony, while trying to somehow pin Kennedy’s death on the anti-communists, they omit mentioning that seven months before assassinating Kennedy, Oswald attempted to assassinate one of the most prominent anti-communists in Dallas, General Edwin Walker. What’s that you say, Salon mentioned General Walker? So they did – only, they mentioned him as one of the right wing zealots who posed a threat to Kennedy when he visited: Over the next three years the simmer burst into a full boil as various luminaries of the John Birch Society such as millionaire oil man H.L. Hunt and the anti-communist fanatic Gen. Edwin Walker, a zealot so far to the right that he even believed Eisenhower was a communist, fanned the flames of anti-Kennedy hatred. Walker was at the center of the plot against Adlai Stephenson to which Mrs. Doyle referred in her letter. He had exhorted his followers (some of whom belonged to group that unironically called itself the “National Indignation Convention”) to confront the U.N. ambassador when he came to town and they did, hitting him with signs and spitting in his face before he could be rescued by the police. Truly, the mind boggles. All of this of course misses the point, which is that if gun control could be expected to be effective anywhere it would be in the zone of a Presidential visit. No one at all can legally carry a gun within the range of secret service clearance for a Presidential visit. Which is to say nothing of the absurdity of supposing that someone who was willing and committed enough to assassinate the President – an endeavor which history shows is almost certain to end in the death or indefinite incarceration of the assassin – would be somehow deterred by the threat of a citation for failure to obtain the proper carry permits. This entire article is a nonsensical mishmash of broken logical connections, slander, and outright historical ignorance. But this is what passes for argument these days among the circle of committed gun control enthusiasts, as it does among the left in general. Thankfully, at least on the issue of guns. It has been privately speculated by a fellow long time researcher that the 5-31-64 date Mr. WEST wrote on the referenced surveyed map was the date that his surveyors license was renewed. That cannot be for the simple reason that the date Mr. WEST has written on several of his different DP maps is different for each of those several different maps. (if the date was his licensing date then that date would remain the same on each of his different maps) While being shown one of his differently-dated DP maps during his 1969 testimony in the CLAY LaVERGNE SHAW trial, he also answered a question about that different DP map's date when he testified to the date of that DP map being drawn as 4-31-64. The question remains: Does anyone have any facts or opinion as to why Mr. WEST wrote that the TAGUE curb had already been "REMOVED" 66-days before a curb section was filmed being removed 8-5-64? A long boat ride was made easy with Kumana's frank humor, he said. But Kumana's laughter often turned to tears when the president's name was mentioned. "Jack was an extraordinary man, and I think in the short amount of time they got to know each other, I think Eroni picked up on how Jack was," Max Kennedy said. "And I think people feel a particular connection to the person they save." Danny Kennedy, an American, has run a dive shop in Gizo, near the site of the patrol torpedo boat wreck, since the 1980s. He often connected Kumana with visiting journalists and tourists, hoping to keep Kumana's story alive. "He was always so animated, and he had this amazing amount of energy," said the shop owner, who has no relation to the Kennedy family. "He was always very agile, very surefooted, and always seemed to smile and laugh a lot." Kumana, whose cause of death was not immediately available, never knew precisely how old he was. He was a teenager when he canoed through those dangerous waters. He and Gasa were working as coastwatchers, tracking Japanese presence in the islands for the Allies, when they came across the PT-109 crew. And Kumana never forgot Kennedy. A visitor to his Ranongga Island hut in 2008 found his home covered with newspaper clippings and photos of the former president. As Kumana spoke about Kennedy to Mark Roche, a Texan with a passion for World War II history, he swung from laughter to bouts of weeping and back again. Kumana's son, named after Kennedy, translated while Kumana clutched a heavy bust of the president to his chest. "It was the highlight of his life, and he couldn't really let go of it," said Roche, 57, who spent a few hours with Kumana, whom he called a simple, brave man, as well as a war hero. Kumana entrusted Roche with a mission: delivering a Kumana family heirloom to Kennedy's grave in 2009. Solomon Islands "shell money" is passed down through the generations, and the giant clam shell Roche brought to Arlington National Cemetery had been in the Kumana family for hundreds of years. On his DP map, along with arrowing that bullet impact location, Mr. WEST has written, " SECTION OF CURB REMOVED " ( "removed" = past tense ) http://i.imgur.com/1V4ifNL.jpg Can you provide any fact(s) ((or even just your opinion)) as to why Mr. WEST wrote on a 5-31-64-dated survey map that the section of the curb that was bullet fragment-impacted had already been removed 66 days before 8-5-64? Several months ago I asked TOM PURVIS (before he passed-on) if he knew any facts about this because Mr. PURVIS claimed to have known Mr. WEST. Mr. PURVIS had never noticed that Mr. WEST had 5-31-64-written that the section had already been "removed," and he stated that he and Mr. WEST had never discussed these discrepancies related to the bullet fragment-impacted curb section. FYI.... THOMAS LEMUEL "Lem" JOHNS has passed-on. On 11-22-63 he was one of the Secret Service Agent's riding within Dealey Plaza in an enclosed car behind then-Vice President LYNDON JOHNSON. JOHNS stated to the HSCA that, "the first two [audible muzzle blasts and/or mechanically suppress-fired bullet bow shock N-waves] sounded like they were on the side of me towards the grassy knoll" [RIF 180-10074-10079]. JOHNS remembered hearing/could hear a total of 3 blasts and/or shockwaves that sounded relatively evenly-spaced apart. JOHNS stated to VINCE PALAMARA in 2004 that he was NOT the agent that DP-witness/Dallas police patrolman JOE MARSHALL SMITH soon encountered behind the grassy knoll picket fence. DP-witness/NBC movie camera-filmer DAVE WIEGMAN stated to GARY MACK that while WIEGMAN was on foot in Dealey Plaza during and in the immediate aftermath of the shots, WIEGMAN did NOT ever see JOHNS up on the grassy knoll hill. However, after a third shot, the entire motorcade sped up. Mr. Johns, on foot, was left behind on the street. Rufus Youngblood, the chief agent in the Johnson security detail, used his body to cover the vice president and Mrs. Johnson as their car followed the Kennedy vehicle and a Secret Service car to Parkland Hospital. Amid the chaos, Mr. Johns climbed aboard a car carrying photographers, then moved to the sidecar of a police motorcycle en route to Parkland. He found Johnson and the other Secret Service agents at the hospital, waiting as surgeons worked on Kennedy. Texas Gov. John B. Connally also was wounded but survived. When Kennedy died, an unmarked police cruiser took Johnson and agent Youngblood to Love Field where Air Force One waited to fly Johnson to Washington. Mr. Johns, who had been seeking a secure hospital exit for Johnson and Youngblood, had to leave for the airport in another police car. Once at the airport, Mr. Johns screened all those who boarded Air Force One while awaiting the arrival of first lady Jacqueline Kennedy and the casket carrying the president’s body. There were concerns about the possibility of an attempt on Johnson’s life. Mr. Johns was among those gathered in the Air Force One stateroom when Johnson was sworn in as president. In White House photographer Cecil Stoughton’s photo — perhaps the most famous picture ever taken aboard Air Force One — Mr. Johns stands behind Mrs. Kennedy as Johnson takes the oath of office. The Treasury Department, then in charge of the Secret Service, gave Mr. Johns an award for his actions on that day. He advanced to chief of the president’s detail in 1965, and assistant director of the Secret Service in overall charge of the protective forces in December 1967. During the Vietnam War, the Secret Service found itself on the front lines of violent anti-Johnson demonstrations. During a 1966 presidential trip to Melbourne, Australia, protesters drenched Mr. Johns and Youngblood in paint intended for the president. Another Secret Service agent, Bob Taylor, had his foot run over while getting between demonstrators and the presidential car during the melee. Mr. Johns left Washington during the Nixon presidency but returned to work as administrative chief and security director for Joseph A. Califano Jr., then secretary of health, education and welfare under President Jimmy Carter. Thomas Lemuel Johns was born in Birmingham, Ala., on Dec. 11, 1925. Mr. Johns served in naval aviation during World War II and then worked as a Birmingham firefighter. He graduated from Howard College (now Samford University) near Birmingham and served as a criminal investigator for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms. He joined the Secret Service in 1954 and served on President Dwight D. Eisenhower’s security detail during the last two years of the Eisenhower administration. According to the New York Times, survivors include his wife, Nita; a son, Jeff; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Three generations of the Johns family have served in the Secret Service. In addition to Mr. Johns, son Jeff was on President Ronald Reagan’s security detail and grandson Michael was on details for Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama through 2010. In 1998, Justice and Treasury department lawyers were considering legislation to exempt Secret Service agents from subpoenas regarding personal and political information overhead during their protective duties. Mr. Johns favored such a law and tried to clarify the types of information that agents could be called to provide. “If an agent witnesses a criminal act,” he told Newsday, “I don’t see that we can say we refuse to testify.
