Steve Thomas
Chris Cillizza, CNN Editor-at-large https://www.cnn.com/2020/09/18/politics/ruth-bader-ginsburg-supreme-court-republican-senators-loyalty-trump/index.html “If McConnell cannot muster the votes he needs to confirm Trump's pick prior to the November election, it's possible he would bring the Senate back in a lame-duck session after the election in hopes of gaining a few more votes. The theory of such a move would be that endangered GOP senators who had either won or lost in November would be freer to cast votes without fear of political reprisal. (Note in McConnell's statement that he didn't say the Senate would vote on Trump's pick before the election; he just said the Senate would vote on the pick.)” Steve Thomas

Steve Thomas
Democrats have let Mitch McConnell know that if he pushes this, and the Democrats win the Senate in this election, they will increase the number of Justices to 11 or 13. If Trump loses, a Democratic President will not veto this move. The number of Supreme Court Justices is not enshrined in the Constitution. It's set by Congress. If Republicans give Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s seat to some Federalist Society fanatic, Democrats should pack the court. https://www.nytimes.com/2020/09/19/opinion/ruth-bader-ginsburg-death-supreme-court-nomination.html

Kirk Gallaway
Definitely a war cry for the Dems. The hypocrisy of statements of Graham and Republicans after blocking Obama's pick for 11 months will by in large work against the Republican Senate elections. The idea of Mitch Mc Connell trying to push this through would make the him the lamest lame duck Senate leader ever if the Dems take the Senate. It would mean a majority of justices were appointed by Presidents who didn't win the popular vote. Joe, you can pretty much assume that large group of people wearing masks are the Trump resistance. Virginia isn't right wing anymore and has trended blue for the last 15 years. After the way he buckled from his campaign denunciations of Trump. Is it any wonder that Graham is zero integrity? Steve Thomas This very thought gave me solace last night. There is hope if nothing happens to stop the current course, though it would dilute the SCOTUS in a sense. But the Senate and Presidency must be won first.
Steve Thomas
"The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here. It is for us the living, rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced. It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us -- that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion -- that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain..." Richard Price
Perfect quotation for this situation Steve. Few can/could match the wisdom and oration of Lincoln and none since JFK have have matched his understanding and deep reverence for this country and its underlying foundations. David Andrews
On 9/18/2020 at 9:16 PM, David Andrews said: Which means - mark my words - Trump will nominate Bill Barr to the Court seat, even if Barr has to step down as A-G first, even (and especially) if Trump has to begin the process after losing the election. Win or lose in November, the Senate will throw it to Barr as a sop to Trump.
