A fiery air crash, in which all 28 passengers and 7 crew were killed, put Sai Kung's Basalt Island in the news on both sides of the Pacific in 1948. Quentin Roosevelt, the grandson of American president Theodore Roosevelt, and vice-president of China National Aviation Corp. (CNAC), an affiliate of Pan American World Airways, was one of the passengers on that fateful flight from Shanghai.

Kermit Roosevelt, former CIA agent, was born in 1916. He died on June 8 aged 84

Mastermind of the CIA coup that put the Shah of Iran back on his Peacock Throne in 1953

Roosevelt: urbane and courteous, but nevertheless "up to his neck in dirty tricks"

"I OWE my throne to God, my people, my army - and to you," sobbed a grateful Shah of Iran to Kermit Roosevelt in August 1953, after the CIA-backed coup which overthrew the country's independently-minded Prime Minister, Muhammad Mossadeq, and restored the Shah to the Peacock Throne.

The background to the crisis was Iran's substantial oil reserves, which in the early 1950s - like the Suez Canal in Egypt not so long afterwards - were becoming a focus for nationalist sentiment. As soon as Mossadeq became Prime Minister of Iran in 1951, with the support of the Tudeh (Communist) Party, the debate over them moved from aspiration to direct action.

In 1952 Mossadeq nationalised Iran's (mainly British-owned) oil resources, an action which put him beyond the pale with the Americans, who swiftly came to regard him as being the thin end of one of the Cold War's many wedges. From that moment they saw him as opening the door to the Soviet domination of Iran - although in fact he had been as much opposed to giving the Soviet Union an oil concession in the north of the country as he was to the dominance in the south of the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company (the forerunner of BP).

But with the Americans obsessed with the Soviet danger to their interests worldwide, and in the uncertain climate that prevailed within the Soviet Union in the aftermath of Stalin's death, this obvious fact could not save Mossadeq. And the British Government of Winston Churchill, enraged at the nationalisation of its huge oil assets, was even more anxious to have him removed.

When British Intelligence approached the CIA about the possibility of toppling him, it found a ready ear, and a plan - Operation Ajax - was formulated with remarkably little discussion of the ethics of removing the legitimate government of a foreign country. It was the precursor of several such infamous actions by the CIA.

Roosevelt, grandson of President Theodore Roosevelt and the head of the CIA's Middle East division, was the man for the job. A man of languid coolness, he was dispatched to Iran where, on August 3, 1953, he confronted the Shah and bluntly told him that there would have to be an insurrectionary solution to the Mossadeq problem, with the support of the army absolutely vital to success.

But the frightened monarch havered, and it was for Roosevelt to "help" key members of the armed forces to realise where their loyalties lay and physically to assist them to carry out their "duties". In particular he arranged for the influential army commander, General Fazlolah Zahedi, to make an address to the country over the radio, which was to prove important to the Shah's cause.

In spite of all these precautions, the success of the coup was in its early days far from a foregone conclusion. There was widespread rioting from crowds who remained loyal to Mossadeq, and for several days it was difficult to tell whether Roosevelt's tactics were succeeding or not. The Shah himself so doubted the outcome that on August 16 he fled the country and took refuge in Baghdad.

But CIA money was lavished on officials and police. Mossadeq supporters were quietly done away with. Roosevelt gradually persuaded the wavering commanders of army units to show themselves on the streets at the head of their units and to face down the pro-Mossadeq mobs. Mossadeq and ministers and officers loyal to him were arrested, and on August 19, just three days after his flight, the Shah was able to return in triumph to his capital, where he later expressed his heartfelt gratitude to his saviour.

Mossadeq was more fortunate than many of his officers and his Foreign Minister, who were shot. He was sentenced to three years' imprisonment.

As the years rolled by, and the oppressive rule of the Shah gave way in 1979 to the even more iron grip of Ayatollah Khomeini, it became difficult to recall why this relatively moderate secular nationalist should have been seen as such a bogeyman by the West. For many Iranians suffering under the Islamic fundamentalist state, Mossadeq became the symbol of all that Iran might have been without American intervention: a modern, progressive state, yet one independent of the West.

This was certainly a view shared by Shapour Bakhtiar, whose premiership in January 1979 was a brief liberal interlude between the extremes of the Shah and Khomeini.

But Roosevelt remained unrepentant. In his book Counter Coup: The Struggle for the Control of Iran, which appeared in 1979, he made it clear that he had no qualms about the American involvement or the chain reaction it triggered, and no doubts about the rectitude of his actions. Whether his mind was changed by the taking of American hostages by the Khomeini regime, as a reaction to the giving of sanctuary to the deposed Shah, is not on record.

Kermit "Kim" Roosevelt was born in Buenos Aires into an illustrious political family. He was not only the grandson of Theodore Roosevelt but a distant cousin of another President, Franklin D. Roosevelt. His father worked in banking and shipping.

Kim Roosevelt was educated at Harvard, which he left to teach, briefly, before joining the Office of Strategic Services, precursor of the CIA. He specialised in the Middle East and travelled extensively in the region from his Washington base.

It was in Washington, in the late 1940s, that he met another famous spying Kim - Harold "Kim" Philby. Long after the latter's defection to the Soviet Union in 1963 he described his namesake as being a typically urbane, courteous Easterner, "the last person you would expect to be up to his neck in dirty tricks".

In 1958 Roosevelt left the CIA and he then worked for half a dozen years at Gulf Oil. Thereafter he was in demand as a consultant to American companies doing business in the Middle East and to Middle East governments in the US.

Kermit Roosevelt is survived by his wife Mary and by three sons.

Certain interesting details about Pawley, Corcoran, et al, can be found in a rather obscure little CIA historical review, located at:

http://www14.homepage.villanova.edu/david.barrett/bop.html

In the introduction to a series of PDF chapters of this historical review, Dr. David Barrett notes:

"During the 1970s, CIA historian Jack Pfeiffer wrote a Top Secret multi-volume history of 1961’s Bay of Pigs intervention in Cuba. Before his death, Pfeiffer sued unsuccessfully to de-classify some of the History. Though it is widely believed that all volumes are still classified, one is available at National Archives’ JFK Assassination Records Collection. Pfeiffer writes of incompetence at CIA, of an out-of-touch Allen Dulles, of too-close relations between CIA and anti-Castro U.S. corporate leaders, and about “The Question of Assassination.”

This is highly recommended reading, FWIW....

Tom,

That's quite interesting - but what does it mean? I thought the Oswalds hailed from Lousiana? Is there a connection to Pawley? Is that who LHO referenced as his blood relative on the paperwork for the Atsugi assignment in order to qualify? How is Lee Oswald related to the Reilly Coffee Oswalds? Why would Lee Oswald have used one as a reference - W.S. Oswald? What about a Harvey family?

How are you getting these results anyway - SSDI? I plugged in Lee Oswald just for fun - there appear to have been many.

April 24, conversation with Jim Garrison -- He is working hard on the Cuban involvement. He learns that three Oswalds, apparently all members of Lee Harvey Oswald's family, worked for the Reily Coffee Company in the summer of 1963. He has also learned that four months before the Bay of Pigs, an organization known as Friends of Democratic Cuba bought ten, or contracted to buy, ten Ford trucks from the Bolton Ford Company. There is an FBI report on this dated Nov. 25, 1963. Essentially it says that a man named Joseph Moore talked to an assistant manager of the Ford company named Oscar Deslatte. They negotiated, and at the end of the negotiation, this man, Moore, told Deslatte to change the name on the papers to Oswald. Garrison suspects this unknown Oswald may have been one of the relatives, since the FBI report indicates that, A. the incident occurred while Lee Harvey was in the Soviet Union, and B. it is recorded in the FBI exhibits that a picture of Lee Harvey Oswald was shown to Deslatte, and he did not recognize it.

...

Garrison returns to the point that there were three Oswalds working for the Reily Coffee Co. that summer, yet whenever any one of them was interviewed by the FBI, they denied knowing that Lee Harvey Oswald was also employed by the company. The names of the other three Oswalds working for the Reily Coffee Co. are: William S. Oswald, Julian Oswald, and Mary Oswald. Garrison is now proceeding to make a family tree of the Oswald family based on birth certificates that he is trying to obtain. We point out to Garrison that Box 19106 came into existence in 1965, in May; that there very well could be a person named Lee Odom, whose name Shaw would list in his book since May 1965. Garrison scoffs at this, convinced that this is impossible.

...

April 29, conversation in Garrison's office in New Orleans -- Garrison is hard at work on certain possible codes of the Oswald numbers. He is convinced, furthermore, that the CIA involvement is greater than ever. He has information from a New Orleans reporter that one of Novel's lawyers, a man named Plotkin, has admitted that he is being paid by the intelligence agency. Garrison refers to the fact that both Novel and Sandra Moffett, people who certainly have not shown great financial means in the past, have very high-paid lawyers. Then he starts to talk again about the number of Oswalds living in New Orleans, both now and back in 1963, and he says he has 43 drivers' licenses of people named Oswald now living in New Orleans, and he makes reference to the very interesting fact that no person -- aside from Marina and Marguerite -- no person named Oswald was called before the Warren Commission. Garrison intends to show shortly that there was another Oswald working for the Reily Coffee Company in 1963, who was a member of Friends of Free Cuba or Friends of Democratic Cuba -- at least it will be one of the anti-Castro groups -- and he intends to call public attention to the fact that the CIA was involved with these groups; and for that reason, the affiliation with Lee Harvey Oswald with these groups has never come to light. He says that further demonstration of this fact is the difficulty he has had getting extradition papers returned and approved from the states in which Sergio Arcacha, Sandra Moffett, and Gordon Novel are now residing.

...

Garrison says he thinks it's time people knew about the Reily Coffee Co., and he intends to make known the fact that other Oswalds worked there.

...

Other tidbits from Garrison: 1) Oswald, he says, had a high security clearance, and that Weisberg has learned that Oswald had something called a crypto security clearance. 2) It was from the reporter, Hoke May, that the information about Plotkin having been paid by the CIA came. 3) Clay Shaw was arrested in New York in 1939 and 1940 under the name of Claude Bertrand or Claude Claycut.

Conversation with Garrison on May 2 -- He now plans to subpoena the Oswalds who worked for the Reily Coffee Co. in '63 before the Grand Jury. He has talked to the younger W. S. Oswald, who says he doesn't know any of the other Oswalds, and he intends to call in Julian Oswald the following day. He described W. S the younger as very effeminate, and has been tentatively identified as the one who was at Bolton Ford, although this turns out to be erroneous later. Garrison has been in touch with the manager of Bolton Ford, a man named Sewall, who contradicts the assistant manager, Deslatte. He said indeed there were two men who came to the company in 1961 to order 10 trucks; he describes the man referred to as Oswald as one who would fit the description of either W. S. or Lee Harvey, although it is not possible it is either of those two men. Garrison realizes it may not even have been a man named Oswald, but was using the name. More significantly [sic] to Garrison is the manager's description of Joseph Moore, whom he describes as "olive complexion, very dark, very powerful, very muscular, Latin, with a scar over his left eye." This, of course, describes the so-called Cuban who was seen often with Oswald in 1963.

...

A little more on W. S. Oswald who [sic], though he doesn't seem to be important; he is a school teacher during the school session and works for the Reily Coffee Co. as a salesman during the summers.

...

Conversation with Garrison, May 4th: The manager of the Bolton Ford Co., Mr. Sewall, has said that the man, W. S. Oswald, is not the one who came to the Ford company.

"I thought the Oswalds hailed from Lousiana"

Harrison County, Mississippi marriage records:

OSWALD, Wm HARVEY, Mary 1880-Aug-30

Most of the direct family of LHO originated from the south & southwestern counties of Mississippi. Primarily settling in Wilkinson County, just a few miles from the Louisiana line.

William Oswald, Grandfather to LHO, ended up in Harrison County (Gulfport/D'Iberbille) area where he married.

The "Harvey" family is in fact of french descent, and this would have made the son, Robert E. Lee Oswald, Sr. in fact, almost half french from the Mary Harvey (french family of D"Iberville, MS)

After the end of the Civil War, many of these "Oswalds" moved to Arkansas. Primarily, to Drew County, Arkansas.

Some remained along the coastal counties of MS (Harrison & Jackson County), while others, such as William Oswald & Mary Harvey, moved over into Louisiana.

The Oswald forefathers of LHO, had arrived in Harrison County, MS from Liberty County, Georgia, and from there, from South Carolina.

"How is Lee Oswald related to the Reilly Coffee Oswalds? Why would Lee Oswald have used one as a reference - W.S. Oswald? What about a Harvey family?"

W.S. Oswald (Jr) was the first cousin of LHO. W.S. Oswald (Sr) was the brother to Robert E. Lee Oswald, Sr, father of LHO.

W.S. Senior was deceased, however, on his application to Reily Coffee Company, LHO listed the address of WS Senior, and had been there and visited his aunt.

The other two Oswald's have not been fully traced, however, the "Julian" has other references to Covington, LA, which is where William Oswald & Mary Harvey Oswald, Grandfather & Grandmother of LHO lived.

This is why I long ago showed another "distant cousin" of LHO, Robert Oswald of Jackson County, MS, and his associations with various organizations.

http://www.mdah.state.ms.us/arlib/contents...37|1|1|1|21039|

The Louisiana "Oswald" SSDI provides some indication of the relatives of LHO.

For the most part, virtually each and every one listed in Metarie, is of some relationship, as are most of those who have the New Orleans address also.

Well Tom, I had fun surfing - that's for sure. I had no idea that name was so common - actually, interestingly enough, I found plenty of the following combinations:

Harvey Oswald

Oswald Harvey

Harvey Lee

Harvey Lee Oswald

etc.

There didn't seem to be a concentration that I noted of any consequence. Found this one interesting only because I was looking for a 1939 -- or thereabouts -- birthdate.

LEE G HARVEY 05 Mar 1937 13 Dec 2003 (V) 10466 (Bronx, Bronx, NY) (none specified) 073-48-8252 New York

You once said something to the effect that Oswald was in it up to his *ss. I was wondering if perhaps you might be willing to elaborate on that point? Clearly you have more of a background on the Oswalds then I have ever seen - but then, I never finished reading 'Harvey and Lee,' which is now looking like something that must be remedied. Have you read it?

I am still under the impression that Oswald, for reasons still unclear, was selected as the Patsy for the assassination. He was handled, doubled [by as many as 4 - 5 folks or even more], closely monitored, set up, and taken down. I don't believe he fired as much as a single shot at the President, and I did wonder about a comment made here on this Forum once concerning Oswald's role having been to fire a shot into the ceiling of the 5th floor. That would fit in with a phony assassination plan - if only Oswald and his handlers were aware of such a thing - or if this wasn't simply a red herring tossed in later.

From the Fritz notes and the other interview information, plus details concerning the ordering of the weapons, the package, the bag, the missing clip, the mauser, the other rifles, the shells at Tippit's site, the descriptions, the line-ups, the defaced folks in the doorway of the TSBD in the Altgens, etc. - seems to me that Oswald was where he said he was - on the steps, at least, for a certain period of time.

But I'm only making guesses obviously - since I really don't know what he may have been doing, thought he was doing, or was led to thinking he was doing, on that day in Dallas.

Speaking of names, I guess it's corny, but the best anagram I saw for Lee Harvey Oswald: "was reveaLed HOly"

Perhaps I have an "edge" which others do not.

Same with the "Pawley" side.

Purvis retired from the FBI shortly afterwards and practiced law. He also bought a radio station in Florence, South Carolina, and served in the Army in World War II as a Lieutenant Colonel. On February 29, 1960, Melvin Purvis killed himself in his home in Florence, shooting himself with the same gun he carried the night Dillinger was killed. It should be noted that at the time of his death, Purvis was slowly and painfully dying of cancer.

Thanks Tom.

I read the bit on Dillinger and Purvis. If Melvin Purvis is a relative of yours - he appears to have been a brave man. Was there anything to his suicide that was considered questionable? The last sentence doesn't seem to make much sense - and it appears that Hoover was less than pleased with having been up-staged in the public eye.

http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/amex/dillinger/peo...s/p_purvis.html

Like his boss J. Edgar Hoover, Melvin Purvis was a middle-class Southerner. He also had a law degree and, like many young lawyers, accountants and military veterans who answered Hoover's call for new professional standards at the Bureau of Investigation, lacked any law enforcement experience when he joined the Bureau of Investigation in 1927.

After graduation, Purvis worked for a law firm in his native South Carolina. He decided to become a diplomat, but because the State Department was not hiring, Purvis became a special agent with the Justice Department.

Purvis excelled as a field agent, and quickly rose through the ranks. Although his abilities as an administrator seem to have been mixed, he was one of a few agents that Hoover chose for special attention, and he received many opportunities to earn promotions. After heading the Division of Investigation offices in Birmingham, Oklahoma City, and Cincinnati, he was placed in charge of the Chicago office in 1932.

On March 6, 1934, Hoover ordered Purvis to develop a network of informants "in the event of an emergency arising," and to "put forth every effort" to capture Dillinger. After his escape from jail at Crown Point, Indiana on March 3, 1934, Dillinger committed a federal crime by driving a stolen vehicle across state lines. Hoover had avoided the pursuit of Dillinger because he wasn't sure it could be done. Now that he was forced by political pressure to go ahead with it, he covered himself by upbraiding Purvis for not having taken action in the past.

On April 24, 1934, special agents from the Chicago and St. Paul offices traveled to Little Bohemia, Wisconsin. They had received a tip that the Dillinger gang was staying there and would be leaving that night. Travel by air was still novel in 1934 and it was part of Purvis's genius to think of it.

When the special agents arrived at the lodge, the owner's dogs started barking. Purvis, who had no map of the place, told the men to surround the building. In the darkness, two agents got entangled in a barbed wire fence; two other fell into a ditch.

When the special agents saw a car carrying three men pull away from the lodge, they fired at it. Passengers John Hoffman and John Morris were wounded; Eugene Boiseneau was killed. They were local Civilian Conservation Corps workers who had come to the lodge to have a few beers.

The special agents returned gunfire which started coming from the second floor. They also fired tear gas shells, but the wind blew the tear gas in their direction, making the agents sick.

The Dillinger gang got away, but not before Baby Face Nelson killed one special agent and wounded two other men. Purvis admitted the operation was a failure. He offered his resignation to Hoover, who refused to accept it.

On July 22, 1934, Chicago brothel owner Anna Sage called Purvis to tell him that Dillinger had invited her and Polly Hamilton to the movies that night. Purvis rushed his men to the Biograph Theater. He had them surround every possible exit. The special agents were joined by a few officers of the East Chicago Police Department.

As Dillinger was leaving the theater, Purvis struck a match and lit his cigar, indicating that he had spotted him. Then he signaled for the men to move in. Purvis stood slightly behind Dillinger. He said: "Stick 'em up, Johnny, we have you surrounded."

Dillinger ran from Purvis, who said he saw the outlaw pull a gun from his pocket. The special agents fired several shots. Two of them hit Dillinger.

Purvis himself never fired a shot. He refused to give any individual agent credit for the shooting, to protect the special agent from possible revenge. Purvis likened the operation to a military action, in which all the special agents were equal contributors, and therefore, equally heroic. Nevertheless, he became famous as "The Man Who Got Dillinger," receiving fan mail from around the country.

Purvis became instantly famous as the "ace G-man." Reporters liked his idealistic, self-effacing manner. Purvis received many letters from women who offered themselves or their friends in marriage.

Hoover, however, was very jealous of Purvis' popularity, which briefly surpassed his own. He did not want any individual special agent to be singled out for fame: "no one employee of this Division can be responsible for the successful termination of any one case... Through cooperative efforts a case is broken."

Hoover assigned Purvis to bad cases and subjected him to extreme scrutiny. He resigned a year later. Although he had many job offers, Hoover sabotaged his attempts to find work in law enforcement or a related field. Purvis was forced to earn money by making commercial endorsements, which he found humiliating.

Despite Hoover's harsh treatment, Purvis remained loyal to the FBI and its special agents. After leaving the FBI he married and had three sons. In 1960, he died at his home in South Carolina, killed by a shot from the .45 automatic that his fellow agents gave him when he resigned. Although the FBI labeled the death a suicide, it was later determined that Purvis may have been trying to remove a tracer bullet that was stuck in the pistol.

So are you then related to Melvin Purvis, also to Pawley somehow? Distantly? It appears that there was a tradition for using Maiden names of families in the namesake of older American families - hence the Harvey, for example, in Lee Oswald's name. Is that the case? Are you Thomas 'Harvey' Purvis?

Sorry for all the questions - and for prying - I am clearly ignorant and intrusive, and I mean no offense. To be honest, I thought that the premise of Armstrong's book [2 operatives having been selected at an early age, somehow coming from similar family backgrounds] was absolute rubbish. Now, I am totally confused.

1. I am "Thomas Harvey Purvis", and yes, the "family names" continue. My father was Harvey Henry Purvis.

As indicated in previous posting, the "Harvey's" were of french descent and came from D'Iberbille, MS, which is located directly across the back bay from Biloxi, MS.

This family is where "Mary Harvey", wife of William Oswald, Grandfather of Lee Harvey Oswald, originated.

2. My "Purvis" family line traces directly back to the South Carolina Purvis family, which includes Melvin Purvis.

Therefore, many years ago, I had done considerable research in the backgrounds of many, many families, as well as their migration from foreign nations to Virginia; South Carolina; Georgia; Alabama; Mississippi; and Louisiana.

In fact, we even have one of the "South Carolina" Oswald's married into the Purvis family out there.

Although I find no direct line to William Pawley, knowing the area, "Pawley's Island" and the history of the families, it was not difficult to follow the trail to the remainder of the Pawley family history.

3. As to Melvin Purvis, he was a far distant cousin of the South Carolina Purvis family that remained there.

My family travelled over into Alabama, with two brothers going to what is now Purvis, Mississippi, (Thomas Melville Purvis & his brother William Washington Purvis, my Great-great grandfather & Civil War veteran)

William Washington Purvis returned back to Alabama where other members of the family had settled, and thus made his home there.

Having met and spoken directly with nephews, etc; of Melvin Purvis, there is considerably more to his suicide than has been presented.

Macy's (I believe it was) wanted his as their Head of Security. JEH put the end to this!

One of the movie studio's was going to make a major motion picture of his life. JEH put an end to this.

JEH went out of his way to literally "ruin" any career opportunities and/or potentially good jobs that Melvin was offered. In short, JEH utilized his power to prevent Melvin from becoming possible even more well known and famous than JEH.

With this came financial and marital difficulties, which apparantly lead to drinking.

Despondent, Melvin committed suicide.

However, the Purvis name has certainly opened many doors with former FBI Agents whom I long ago searched out and questioned in regards to the JFK assassination.

For the most part, virtually each and every one listed in Metarie, is of some relationship, as are most of those who have the New Orleans address also.

Purvis, MS.

Among other items, I have the original "Town Seal" for the Town of Purvis, MS. (actually, I have already given it to my eldest son)

That is facinating - I am sorry I am disrupting the thread, and also being overly intrusive. It's a huge leap to assume that anyone familiar with firearms would have shot themselves trying to remove a bullet from a pistol. Hoover is extremely repulsive to me personally, and I see no reason to doubt the account of Roy Cohn and the blackmail photos with Tolson also. That meglomaniac was responsible for a great deal of ill in this Country. If Hoover wanted the fame, he should have been in the field working with Melvin when they caught Dillinger.

I have a million questions I would like to ask you, but I will withold them. I think I have asked enough already, but can't help asking only these few more:

- The doubletap, or multiple rifles on the 6th floor. There's some evidence that supports Connally having been struck in the chest. Hoover himself made it clear to Johnson. If he wasn't struck in the chest, SBT still fails, IMO. I can accept a Connally wound as the result of a doubletap, or a second rifle on the 6th floor in a different window...otherwise I still think he was indeed struck by a bullet fired from behind the retaining wall, or in the area where Jim Hicks spotted rifleman at the Pergola shelter, behind Zapruder. What's your opinion? Hicks mentions the 'traffic sign' having been hit and removed. He didn't say 'The Stemmons Sign.' It could well have been one of the signs attached to the posts of the sign. A shot from this location, slightly deflected by the edge of one of these signs, could have resulted in a Kennedy miss to Connally, or even the small throat wound. I don't have the time or inclination to figure out where a weapon would have had to have been located in order for Connally to have moved into the line of fire - but at a minimum, for Hoover to have been correctly informed, it would have been in front of the Lincoln?

- Do you credit the concept of someone from the Harvey family being used somehow as part of a larger program involving Lee Oswald? If you have not read 'Harvey and Lee' and would like a copy, I would be more than happy to send you mine. I have a friend who is a relative of Lizzie Borden. As he told me, the inside story in the family is - yep, she delivered the whacks. Is there any inside info which you have happened upon in your research which would indicate or validate claims of an Oswald project, and what that project may have entailed? Is it possible that there was someone from the Harvey family that was indeed working along with LHO as part of some larger project?

I appreciate what you have said, and will continue trying to follow you - but I'm clearly well out of my depth. I am facinated by Pawley and would like to devote some time to reading up on him. Do you have any book recommendations?

No more questions. ;) Thanks very much for sharing. I'll keep my mouth shut now and try to follow along.

This forum now contains more on the personal background history of William D. Pawley, his family, and his connections, than can be found anywhere, including "SPARTACUS" which is highly incorrect.

And it is doubtful that I am through with that subject.

YES! It lies in "the family", and therein lies the answers as to exactly why no one has ever talked.

So, the concept that "someone would have talked" may hold true elsewhere, however, families, and especially Southern heritage families, have long held many family secrets.

Especially when there are many, many lawyers involved.

For those who have never been to the AF Museum at Warner-Robbins, it is well worth the trip.

Much more enlightening than "Disneyland" etc;

The Wright-Patterson AFB Museum also has items of interest to the Pawley aviation association background, as well as to the ultimate and direct connections to the political and wealth power of New York City.

Name: Herbert Clifton DOBBS (Brother to Annie Hahr Dobbs Pawley/wife of William D. Pawley)

Sex: M

Birth: 27 AUG 1893 in Marietta, Cobb, GA

Death: 28 MAY 1989 in Coral Gables, FL

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Herbert Dobbs helped begin flight operations to Latin America and the Caribbean during his 38 years as an airline executive. He attended the University of Georgia. His start in aviation came in 1917, when he left law school at Georgetown University and joined the US Army. He was sent overseas and trained as a pilot in the Italian-made Caproni night bombers, of which only two remain. (Daughter Louise was an invited guest representing him at the dedication of the Caproni exhibit at the Air Force Museum at Wright Patterson AFB.)

He was soon commissioned as a first lieutenant in the Air Force and flew day and night bombing raids over enemy lines. He was stationed in Italy under the squadron command of former New York Mayor Fiorella LaGuardia. Herbert was decorated with the Italian Croce al Merito de Guerra, as well as with the Battle of the Piave River medal.

In 1924, he moved to Miami. Five years later he joined Pan American Airways as Latin America division manager. "He was sent down on a training boat to open their first airfields in Cuba, Haiti and the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico for a four-year stint in the late1920s." He ended his 18 year career at Pan Am in 1947 to become vice president of National Airlines.

In 1950, he joined Eastern Airlines as vice president in chare of flight relations and passenger handling for the Latin America division. When a plane was hijacked to Cuba, in one of the first such incidents, the airlines sent Mr. Dobbs to negotiate with the new Cuban regime for its release.

He retired from Eastern in 1967, receiving a certificate of "distinguished achievement" for his 43 years in aviation.
