Miles Copeland

Recommended Posts

My newspaper today has an article on a new book 'Two Steps Forward, One Step Back' by Miles Copeland III. The interesting quote comes from his father, who joined the CIA in 1947 as a founding member, and chief of its Political Action staff :-  "Nobody, knows more about changing governments, by force or otherwise, than me". Any thoughts?

President Biden just told the world, in Geneva, that “How would it be if the United States were viewed by the rest of the world as interfering with elections directly of other countries and everybody knew it?”

Great article W.  Recommended reading plus I want to look into the book links Anthony posted by Copeland related to it.  But it's you fault for posting it.  I've had the song in my head all afternoon and evening now.  I feel compelled to share it so maybe it will get stuck in someone else's head and leave mine.  Though I was hooked by the guitar 55 years ago.  It doesn't look like he was playing lead, I wonder who was?

Ron,

As it turns out, I recorded a version of this old Johnny Rivers song about 20 years ago with my one man basement studio band.  (Not representative of my artistic output.)

I added a James Bond themed intro and some goofy Mexican DJ type rap lyrics -- borrowing from the Plugz "Hombre Secreto" version of the song that was used in the movie Repo Man.

This is the kind of sh** that happens when you drink a few beers while trying to record old rock songs in your basement on a hot summer night.  🤥

If we digress further from Copeland who sounds very interesting, the guitar riff made me think of surf music, Dick Dale in particular.  Rivers said he made it up but it's there on the writer Sloan's demo per wiki's story.  The Challengers did an album version with Dick Dale influence on one of the guitarists.

This takes me back to Where The Action Is on the beach at Malibu 67 (?), Paul Revere and the Raiders.

LOL, Ron.  This song brings back a lot of memories.  We used to play this 45 back in the day.

In fact, the first song I ever learned to play on my uncle's guitar in those days was Paul Revere's, "I'm Not Your Stepping Stone."  E-G-A-C.

My old violin teacher warned me that if I started playing the guitar I would never become a great violinist.  He was correct.  🤥

To bring more attention to Miles Copeland as it seems he was a player, and so I don't forget to read the above, and regarding W's original RS article, in light of his comments.

Lip synching only possible in Cali at the time.  Given Dick Clark's West Coast show . . .

Judging by their goofy Revolutionary War costumes, it just occurred to me that Paul Revere and the Raiders were probably supposed to symbolize resistance to the British Invasion of the 1960s... Duh... 🤥

(I was also one of the last guys in America to finally realize that Oswald didn't kill Kennedy.)
