Jack Ruby / James Earl Ray connection?

Mike Aitken

Recommended Posts

In his book Evidence Withheld, former FBI agent Donald G. Wilson claims that following the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr., while he was searching the car belonging to the alleged assassin James Earl Ray, he found a piece of a page from the 1963 Dallas phone book, containing Jack Ruby’s name and number.

If anyone is familiar with this, I have a couple of questions.  Is there any evidence whatsoever that connects Ruby and Ray?  Additionally,  do people take this guy Wilson for his word, or is he looked at as a fraud?

I did not know about that book Mike.

Thanks.

Jim Douglass covered the civil trial for Probe magazine.

Wilson did not testify since the DOJ confiscated his evidence.

But Douglass did an interview with Wilson and we published it in The Assassinations anthology. (pp.479-491)

Wilson was in the Atlanta office at the time of King's murder.  He was on the stolen car section.  So that is how he got this assignment.

On pages 483-84 he describes how he opened the passenger door and this envelope fell out.

It was partly based on this evidence that Reno opened up a limited inquiry into the King case.

Thanks for the info, Sir!  I have the book and will have to go back and check out the interview.

One of the reasons I raised an eyebrow reading Wilson’s book is that he made numerous references to a traitor/FBI informant within King’s inner circle, who sold out King and may have been involved in the plot to eliminate King, known by the initials “J.J.”.  The obvious conclusion (at least to me) is that he is implying that Jesse Jackson was this individual.  I’m no expert, but I dunno…that’s what leads me to question him finding Jack Ruby’s phone number in Ray’s car.

Mike, If you haven't read Dr. Pepper's 'The Plot To Kill King' you may well find more information on Don Wilson's evidence, as well as the threats and hassle he and his wife suffered to 'persuade' him not to testify in court.

There is also mention of Jesse Jackson's suspicious actions prior to King's killing.  Getting the 'Defenders' out of the Lorraine and moving King's original room booking from ground floor to up on the balcony.

Pepper also investigated the links between the mysterious 'Raul' and Ruby.

James Earl Ray was a "Thunder Road" type career criminal up until the King killing.

Raised dirt poor, uneducated, one unsophisticated caper after another.

His hauls were always just one to a few hundred dollars.

J.C. Penny working man dress attire.

Always caught.

Then his entire lifestyle changes when he escapes from the Missouri State Pen and is not caught. It is extremely rare when major prison escapees are not apprehended within days or a couple of weeks. Let alone poor and uneducated ones.

Yet, remarkably Ray not only stays uncaught ... he immediately acquires new ID and name and then begins a cross country and Mexico traveling adventure and not on a Greyhound bus/YMCA room renting budget.

He's got enough money to support himself with no record of employment during this time. He stays in L.A. for awhile. Takes ball room dance classes as well as a bartending class. He volunteers to help with the George Wallace presidential campaign?

At some point Ray even pays a plastic surgeon to perform nose job plastic surgery?

Obviously with cash?

Ha! You still with me on this?

He even ventures to Mexican resort towns Acapulco and Puerto Vallarta and passes himself off there as a porn film producer, even ordering expensive film equipment through mail order.

Where the heck are these first class travel funds coming from?

Ray ends up in Atlanta. Reads newspapers daily. Tracks Martin Luther King's address and travel itinerary.

Buys a two year old Mustang car. Again, how the heck does he come up with a couple of grand for that?

Ray reads that MLK is going to Memphis. Immediately drives himself there as well and knows the perfect location motel to allegedly get one shot at MLK who just happens to be milling about on a second story balcony at the Lorraine motel which places him in the perfect open for Ray to get him in the head.

Ray then leaves his expensive rifle behind and without even wiping his prints off of it ( at least Oswald had more sense than that ) races off in his fairly new Mustang and successfully eludes an army of highest anxiety security forces who have put out multi-state "be on the lookout for" alerts which he gets through and makes it all the way back to Atlanta?

Then Ray makes it to Canada, gets another fake passport that is well made enough to get him to Portugal and England.

Ray is wearing suits and ties through all this which were never his wardrobe thing up until the last year of his life.

Ray was paid well once he escaped from the Missouri State Pen until he was finally apprehended in London.

Whoever paid him did so for a reason. The ultimate reason being the killing of MLK.

The fact that our official investigating agencies could never ascertain who paid Ray throughout his well lived life of travel after his prison escape, through the killing of MLK and his expensive foreign country escape travel is outrageously absurd.

The MLK killing was so obviously a conspiracy it's nuts to think and/or assert otherwise.

IMO anyways.

Matt:

There was more than one informant in King's entourage, including his photographer.

And no one knows who switched the room.

As per JJ being Jackson, that is something I don't know.

But as far as the envelope goes, that appears to be for real.

JB--

I agree with you.

Human behavior is often inexplicable.

But why would an apolitical small-time crook suddenly decide to assassinate a major political figure?

In addition, no one seems to regard James Earl Ray as particularly racist.

If Ray was the assassin, it seems probably he was set up and paid to do it.

Regarding the page from the phone book, it’s obviously intriguing, but I can’t think of any good reason why Ray would’ve had it in his possession other than it being some kind of morbid souvenir.  What other reason would he have had for keeping it in his possessions nearly four and a half years after Kennedy had been assassinated and over a year after Ruby’s death.

Was Pepper able to establish a connection between Raul and Ruby?

Pepper had information from a Glenda Grabow who told him that in 1963 she had occasionally seen a man whom she only knew as 'Jack' with Raul.  At that period, in the autumn of '63 Grabow had a relationship with Raul.  It was about a month or two before Roy, Glenda's other,  was released from prison.  She only realised who this 'Jack' was  when his photograph was flashed across the world after he had killed Lee Harvey Oswald.

Don Wilson & his material on which the name of Raul was written next to the letter 'J' and the telephone number of Jack Ruby's Vegas Club.  Following up on this lead, Pepper went to Dallas in order to interview some former strippers and associates who had worked for Ruby.  He met Chari Angel, Bev Oliver & Madeleine Brown.  Pepper produced a spread of photographs in front of each on separate occasions and each one independently confirmed that she had seen Ruby with the man Pepper had identified as Raul.  In fact, Bev remembered Raul giving Ruby what appeared to be a large amount of cash in what she described as a grocery store paper bag.  There was no doubt that each of these women corroborated Glenda Grabow's information that Jack Ruby and Raul knew each other.  Don Wilson's materials appeared to fortify that fact.
