  1. Corona-noia now reaching idiotic, Andromeda Strain proportions, reflecting fear of more than disease. Like one of those movies they used to call symptomatic of modern life. No SXSW in Austin this year: https://slate.com/technology/2020/03/sxsw-canceled-coronavirus-austin.html
  2. More on the Coronavirus threat to cinemas: https://www.theguardian.com/film/2020/mar/06/cinema-coronavirus-projected-5bn-loss "MGM’s decision to delay the release of the Bond film was applauded by many, despite a potential $50m bill to cover logistics – as well as costs and share falls for the many sponsors whose tie-in campaigns have already begun. "Momentum was built by the release of Billie Eilish’s theme song last month, as well as a $4.5m Super Bowl advert, that will be chalked up to long-lead brand awareness. Had MGM stuck to its original date, estimates suggest that there would be a minimum 30% reduction to a global box-office take that was anticipated to top $1bn."
  3. I take your point here about dividing group discrimination from racism, which is why I threw in the xenophobia tag. If you Google "Asian Woman Attacked Wearing Mask," you will get reports of hooligans or other frustrated people attacking people over Coronavirus fears. In England and Europe, some language used has crossed the line of "racism." Here's a borderline case in NYC. The border's always nearby in group issues, and the line of cars is long, but swift-moving: https://www.newsweek.com/new-york-subway-attack-coronavirus-woman-mask-1485842
  4. I thought moving the thread was inexplicable also. It would be good to have a dedicated podcast thread (all subject-related podcasts) to see if that could be maintained. Podcast topics come under topic areas, which means infrequent discussion of podcast material and podcasts.
  5. Like us or not, this thread is approaching 50,000 views. Of recently viewed threads, we are beaten only by "Who Was QJ/WIN," started in 2007, with over 57,000 views. I believe we owe it all to Mark Zaid, and so I propose the creation of an annual Mark Zaid Prize at this institution. +++ Here's the latest extent of Coronavirus xenophobia. Its racist aspect is familiar from America's past: the new Yellow Peril: https://slate.com/human-interest/2020/03/coronavirus-chinese-restaurant-business-oakland-chinatown.html?via=homepage_taps_top
  6. Not so good for snow in New York State and Pennsylvania, and I think New England also, this year.
  7. Why can't she get on a better talk show than Seth Meyers? Lousy time slot, lousy host.
  8. Joe, add to that a "snowless" Europe this season due to climate change, and (based on where I live) greatly reduced snowfall in the northern US, and the winter sports and tourism industries take hits on top of Coronavirus fear losses: https://www.theguardian.com/environment/gallery/2020/mar/06/a-snowless-winter-around-europe-in-pictures https://slate.com/human-interest/2020/03/coronavirus-diaries-travel-agent-halt.html?via=homepage_taps_top https://slate.com/business/2020/03/airlines-are-getting-walloped-by-the-coronavirus.html
  9. I think it's supposed to resemble Jimmy Stewart's. One needs to see the whole picture to get the full benefit of the context of the speech in the Truman era. McBride says that Capra peaked ahead of this film. But he never rocked cold suicide as an opener before: Angela Lansbury so cold in this picture, she's hot. Predicts the rise of Ayn Rand.
  10. Frank Capra's State of the Union (1948) ponders the remaking of politics in the post-war US. An underrated political film.
  11. There is a lot of useful 9/11 info at Christopher Bollyn's website. However, one must keep Christopher Bollyn's anti-Israel bias in perspective. And, as with all 9/11 sites, one needs to triple check everything against other opinions and findings. https://www.bollyn.com/9-11-archive-2018-2/ …the people need to live in ignorance for the general peace of the nation. – Giacomo Casanova
  12. As a 60-something Boomer with borderline diabetes I'm in a higher risk category Same for me.
  13. Postponing the latest Bond film premier for "7 months" seems a long, long time to do so. I know, Joe, it's bad for theaters and restaurants, and babysitters. But Bond will be back, to make money. Unless we're all dead by November. There may have been other factors to the delay. But it does take the wind out of Daniel Craig hosting Saturday Night Live this week.
  14. Warren Quitting! https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2020/mar/05/elizabeth-warren-quitting-2020-democratic-presidential-race
  15. This is the most ghastly Coronavirus news, though it could be a cover story for post-production problems, or to secure a release date in the holiday season: https://slate.com/culture/2020/03/coronavirus-james-bond-no-time-to-die-release-delayed.html
  16. I wish I could post my caption for the Biden photo, but James would suspend me. Gaslighting comes from the villain in this movie (below). But I can see him doing the other thing in the john along with the Adderall and the tweets. In the age of #metoo, Trump has been accused of gaslighting the public by the press, so that's why I'm thinking he's the new Bush for the Dixie Chicks. That and the uniforms. https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/trump-apparently-thinks-hes-a-master-at-gaslighting/2019/10/03/b87d192c-e60d-11e9-a6e8-8759c5c7f608_story.html Charles Boyer, grabbing 'em by the hippocampus.
  17. Vegan protest sign reads, "Let Dairy Die." This is one of those "Divide the nation" shots that has an effect beyond the way the accompanying text presents it. +++ The Dixie Chicks are back with "Gaslighter," which seems to reference the Gaslighter-in-Chief.
  18. Bloomberg quits! A concerted effort to make Biden the new normal over Bernie. https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2020/mar/04/mike-bloomberg-quits-2020-primary-race-democrats
  19. Biden cleaning up by showing up, running a campaign with as much message and enthusiasm as Hillary's in 2016. Hmm...
  20. Crushing and snorting Adderall tablets explains all that time in the bathroom, supposedly tweeting. Also the manic quality of the tweets.
  21. I don't see Beto being called back to the dugout this late in the season. Fred Korth is discussed in many of the back threads.
  22. Chemtrails! Mike Pence said something similar to Trump this morning. +++ Mayor Pete endorses Biden: https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/live/2020/mar/02/pete-buttigieg-joe-biden-mike-bloomberg-bernie-sanders-super-tuesday-live-updates
