real evidence (for a change) – what is it with these pictures of Oswald leafletting?

Recommended Posts

From Paul Trejo:

"What's interesting about this testimony is the sighting of a .30.06 Mauser in the TSBD that week. That wasn't the only reported sighting. In a DPD report, on the day of the JFK assassination, the DPD reported it found a .30.06 Mauser on the 6th floor of the TSBD building.

Later, as we know, that entry was scratched out and changed to 6.5 Mannlicher-Carcano. (According to A.J. Weberman, the 6.5 Mannlicher-Carcanorifle was supplied to the DPD by an underground friend of Gerry Patrick Hemming.)"

The rifle purportedly found by the DPD on the 6th floor was not a 30-06 Mauser. It was reported as a 7.65mm Argentine Mauser.

Aha, you're right Robert. Thanks for the correction. We're losing Bill Shelley bit by bit, it seems...

David, I'll do this the best I can from memory.....originally in his NO Grad Jury testimony he said he had never met Oswald. However you should take a look at his HSCA interview; that's where I recall he talked about knowing Oswald and even meeting him on the street during the leafleting. You might find this in Joan's book as well or even in Caufield's interviews with him. which I see are on line. Now I have to say I don't trust Mr. Beckham on any detail I cannot independently confirm so at the time I started looking at the photos and found the wider angle which I keep talking about which shows him with the young Latina's. Having gotten his military and arrest records I knew he had just married an underage girl and I also knew he was working at a radio station in the neighborhood. After examining several photos I came to the conclusion that he had indeed been there probably had briefly spoken to Oswald who I suspect he did know from hanging around Bannister's young men who did street work for him.

Sorry, that's the closest I can get you from memory.

Has anyone here seen the Martin film?

Paul B.,

You do realize that John T. "Jack" Martin's hard-to-find film was shot on August 9, 1963, in the 700 block of Canal Street, not on August 16 in front of the Trade Mart, don't you? Neither Bill Shelley nor Thomas Beckham nor anyone resembling Edd "Kookie" Byrnes was "caught" on August 9 when Oswald and the three Cubans were arrested for disturbing the peace.

I saw the John T. "Jack" Martin film you are seeking some time ago. Warning: When you watch it, do not expect William Hoyt Shelley or Thomas Beckwith anybody impersonating Edd "Kookie" Byrnes to appear in it. For reasons mentioned in the first paragraph, above.

I recently found the Martin film at issue on the Sixth Floor Museum website (I think), but couldn't figure out how to play it. LOL

Tom,

IMO, this picture goes to the very heart of the problem in identifying people from old photos or film frames. How many people here see Andy Griffith of "Mayberry" instead of of Ed Byrnes in the still?

Personally, I see Don Knotts, aka "Barney Fife.".

Some messages challanging Beckham's self-identification on the Trade Mart photos as reported in Joan Mellen's book exist, found on Google, sourced from a John McAdams newsgroup. I have considered the source, but even a broken clock is right twice daily:

Hi .John,

Say, this fellow is both a Doctor and a Knight? Seems a tad short on

grammatical skills for one so lofty in life, surely?

Still, while he's here, maybe you could ask him why Thomas Edward Beckham

told Joan Mellen that he is depicted in one of the stills taken from

WDSU's film of Oswald picketing the New Orleans International Trade Mart

in August 1963.

***

Hi John,

Mellen believed Beckham and published the still photo in her book, A

Farewell To Justice, noting in the caption that "Beckham confirms that

this is indeed he."

Only problem is that the person Beckham claims to be is actually a

Japanese businessman, Junichi Ehara, who ran a business out of

International Trade Mart, Kasuga & Co, in August 1963. Mention is made of

this in the WC.

This blows a terrible hole in Beckham's credibility, and Mellen's book,

for that matter, as she relies so heavily on Beckham as a source

throughout her work.

Speaking of Japanese businessman Junichi Ehara, what's with the prolonged, walking-around, "arms akimbo" pose?

Was it some kind of message for the bad guys, or was it some kind of insult towards Oswald?

Regarding the former, it reminds me of "Neck Scratcher's" prolonged scratching of the back of his neck, exactly one week earlier than this in the 700 block of Canal Street.

Almost everyone I show that video to immediately volunteers their opinion that "Neck Scratcher" was either pointing to Oswald by doing that, or was sending some kind of secret message to someone who was standing behind "Neck Scratcher" (or whom "Neck Scratcher" thought was standing behind him).

David, it would be more useful to contribute something other than smart-mouthing other researchers.

Who smart-mouthed anybody? If Mellen/Beckham misidentified Beckham in Mellen's book, someone should check it out.

I'm proceeding here from another poster's memory of the Mellen-Beckham identification, and haven't read the book myself. I just saw this quibble online and posted it for consideration. I know the general animus toward McAdams here, so I added a caveat.

If someone would like to tell me which of Mellen's books the Beckham identification appeared in, I'll try to check it out myself and report here.

Are you defending Mellen, or McAdams?
