  1. One of the more interesting docs on HDG was this FBI doc dated 11/26/63 naming HDG as a person of interest. The FBI informant - MM-761-S - told this to the agent orally in person. MM is Miami. "S" is security informant. After some serious digging it looks like MM-761-S was Francisco Wilfredo Varona Alonso, AKA "Pancho," AKA "Paco." No relation to FRD chief Tony Varona. His CIA crypt was AMCONCERT-1. FBI doc - https://www.maryferrell.org/showDoc.html?docId=193177#relPageId=2&search="herminio_diaz" Great doc on Varona. Seems Jake Esterline was a bit peeved ta him in 1969. From MFF: This 6/18/69 doc, written by the CIA Miami Station Chief, Anthony R. Ponchay (Jake Esterline), contains an abundance of biographic data on Pancho and his CIA case officers, especially "Frank" (Tony Sforza). This data matches the data in Pancho's bio on Tepedino (104-10183-10073). https://www.maryferrell.org/showDoc.html?docId=41249#relPageId=2

  4. If Herminio Diaz-Garcia was pulled into the plot it would been through his friend Carlos Zarraga Martinez. Zarraga was both an FBI informant and a CIA asset/informant. Zarraga, HDG and Efigenio Ameijeiras were all members of the old UIR organization in Cuba whose goal was to fight against Batista. Ameijeiras was of extreme interest to the CIA as he was considered the leading hope for a coup against Castro as part of the AMLASH crew. Diaz-Garcia was friends with 2 of the 6 major players - Ameijeiras and Raul Diaz Arguelles. They were one of the leading hopes to "Split the Regime." Zarraga was an AMOT - AMOT-133. Zarraga originally debriefed HDG 7/30/63 (see 4. A) after HDG escaped from Cuba. Zarraga was a member of the AMLEPTON group with were a subgroup within the larger AMOT group. The AMOTS had been setup in Cuba by David Morales and had consisted of 25 or so where they worked closely with Tony Sforza, Jim Peckich and Emilio Rodriguez. Morales managed to get Tony Sforza exfiltrated 6/6/61 after the G-2 were taking serious interest in him. Morales would later put Sforza as head of the AMOTs with Joaquin Sanjenis as his number 2 - aka AMOT-2. The AMOTs and the "debriefers" were always on the lookout for potential assets to be used in CIA infiltration missions to Cuba. Looks like they hit the jackpot with Diaz-Garcia. I digress. Back to HDG. As noted, HDG was of interest for the AMLASH project. Here you see his name written in. Sandalio Herminio Diaz-Garcia . HDG and Zarraga would later work together from 1964-66 were they worked for Army Intelligence after Zarraga resigned from JURE. Some refs and notes: Zarraga would later quit JURE after Ray's failed attempt to infiltrate into Cuba. Zarraga would later become an asset of Army Intel FAD and hang with the Commandos-L crowd, Tony Cuesta and Herminio Diaz-Garcia. 7. Bill, Had Whitten started his soon to be aborted investigation by this point? I find it mind boggling that Whitten would even know about this. Who would have seen Oswald there??
  8. For those that like to dig into the details (Philip) "Elmard" was the pseudo for John Dimmer. Dimmer would go on to replace Ted Shackley at JMWAVE in 1965 after Shackley left for SE Asia

  12. I'm reading "Brothers" just now. Great book.
  13. I found this from a previous write-up. Joannides was reporting to William Kent during 1963. Kent was signing off on Joannides fitness reports as supervisor. I suspect that one reason for not releasing Joannides reports was that Helms was copied on all of them. He would have known about Oswald. Crozier was by all reports a respected member of JMWAVE. He, unfortunately, was the case officer for the DRE. The DRE (Student Revolutionary Directorate) was composed of young independent minded members. In other words, the CIA could not control them. One example was when Crozier under the alias of Roger Fox accompanied 9 DRE members to the 8th World Youth Festival in Helsinki, July-Aug 1962. John Koch and Enrique Beloyra were so disruptive that the Finnish police "detained" Koch and Beloyra and banned the remaining members from speaking at the festival. Despite the ban, Carlos Hernandez, Juan Salvat and Anna Diaz-Silveira managed to speak and draw attention to Koch and Beloyra's detention. The Finnish police released them both on the condition that they leave Finland the next day. It didn't take DRE members (Salvat, Hernandez, Blanco) long before they caused an international incident by firing on the Blanquita hotel in Havana (Aug 24th). Both Czech and Russian officers were staying there. The purpose was to bring attention that Russians were in Cuba. They also reported that there were Soviet missiles in Cuba. The end for Crozier aka "the man in Miami" came when he asked Luis Fernandez-Rocha (AMHINT-53) and Salvat and three others to infiltrate Cuba on either Oct 23-24 during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Ostensibly to report on military intelligence but told they might have to direct artillery fire. Their Today Show interview on Nov 12 and a newspaper article bought DRE members Fernandez-Rocha and Jose Lasa a face to face meeting with Richard Helms himself on Nov 13, 1962. Nestor Sanchez translated. Helms informed them at this meeting that there would be a change in their contact in Miami. (He would replace Crozier with George Joannides alias Walter Newby). He said that (Joannides) could come directly to him (Helms) if he needed any clarification. Fernandez-Rocha Report to Joannides aka Howard https://www.maryferrell.org/showDoc.html?docId=18928#relPageId=3 Even after Joannides(Newby) replaced Crozier, the DRE were still doing their own thing. https://www.maryferrell.org/showDoc.html?docId=16129#relPageId=3

  15. Greg, If my memory is not failing, I think Martino mentioned that Oswald was supposed to meet his contact the theatre and was to be flown out of the country where he was supposed to be disposed of. There were some indications that Oswald was had two torn in half dollar bills when he was arrested. This form of contact identification was currently being used by the SAS/SO (Special Operations Staff/Special Operations) branch headed by Dez Fitzgerald and in use by Henry Hecksher as part of the AMWORLD project. We suspect that LHO was to be flown out of Red Bird airport. Now was he supposed to end up in Houston? Is that why David Ferrie was there on the phone but was called off because, according to Martino "a cop was killed" messing up the whole plan.
  16. Ben, Not to distract from Greg's excellent work here but the initial legwork on the Cuban mechanic was done by Matthew Smith in his interviews with Wayne January. This was the Red Bird Airport. Quoting January's talk with the Cuban: “[Wayne], I tell you. I was a mercenary pilot, hired by the CIA. I was involved in the Bay of Pigs planning strategy which was operated by the CIA. I was there involved with many of my friends when they died, when Robert Kennedy talked John Kennedy out of sending in the air cover which he agreed to send. He cancelled the air cover which he agreed to send. He cancelled the air cover after the invasion was launched. Many, many died. Far more than was told. I don’t know all that was going on but I do know that there was an indescribable amount of hurt, anger and embarrassment of those involved in the operation. … They are not only going to kill the President; they are going to kill Robert Kennedy and any other Kennedy that gets into that position. …You will see…They want Robert Kennedy real bad.” - Cuban pilot. We believe that this was Manuel Villafana who was the nominal head of the Commando Mambises run by Grayston Lynch who was tasked by David Morales. He [the Cuban] became comfortable with January after working with him over several days of working together and spoke further about his experience. He was particularly outspoken in relating that his friends had died during the Bay of Pigs landings because JFK had not delivered the promised air cover for them. During their conversations, talk of the President coming to Dallas apparently agitated the Cuban, and he related to January that JFK would be killed in revenge for his comrades' deaths. He stated that “they” were also going to kill RFK because he had convinced his brother not to send planes to support the landings at the Bay of Pigs, and because the Kennedy’s were now in the way of efforts to overthrow Castro. January did note to Smith that there was an absolute need to have the aircraft ready to depart on Friday, and when work had not been completed Thursday, they had worked into the evening to make sure that would happen.
  17. Good to see Bart doing a Webcast. He should be a member of this forum (again). Great resource.
  18. Was Hunt still working for the CIA? Jeff Morley makes a pretty good case in his new book. How does one interpret this? https://www.maryferrell.org/showDoc.html?docId=103901#relPageId=82
  19. Another possible brother or cousin of Juan Caballero would be Armando Caballero-Parodi. Armando was a member of the AMTABBY team along with Antonio "Tony" Soto. (Soto goes to the Congo) Armando was recruited by Segundo Borges (Item 1) for AMWORLD where he would become part of Borges commando team in Costa Rica. Borges - The Wheaton Lead It appears that the CIA may have performed its own internal investigation of those missions in the mid-1970s. Two memoranda from June and August, 1975 record the statement of a Cuban CIA officer (in 1961 a contract employee) that he participated in three abortive Cuban infiltration missions, including an effort to land him near Varadero Beach. The objective of that mission was a long range rifle attack on Fidel Castro. One of the memos mentions the names of two Cubans involved in the mission, "Felix" and "Segundo". Based on this information, it appears that Carl Jenkins may have been transferred out of Guatemala to manage a number of covert infiltration missions, involving at least one which involved Felix Rodriquez and a sniper attack on Fidel Castro. Segundo Borges The "Segundo" mentioned in the CIA document is Segundo BORGES Ransola. Felix Rodriquez verified Segundo's identity and role in the Castro assassination project in an interview many years later - stating that both he and Segundo trained in Panama and then were asked to volunteer for the infiltrations. Rodriquez noted that both he and Segundo were only 19 years old when they entered training in the Panama camp and then were prepared and sent on special missions into Cuba prior to the Bay of Pigs. In the summer of 1963, Segundo Borges joined Manual Artime for a recruiting trip to Fort Benning, Georgia. The stated goal was to recruit men for a new combat effort based out of offshore camps. Although Borges was initially identified as one of Artime's aides at the "Nicaraguan Revolutionary Training Camp" his real role was leader of the AMWORLD maritime infiltration team. [ xiii ] During a November, 1963 recruiting visit to Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Borges reportedly told trainees that Artime had money to buy arms and ships and many places where he could establish a training base.
