Kennedy's Peace Speech and Today

I could not tell you if Allen Welsh Dulles ever met Otto Skorzeny.

However, Allen Dulles did know and meet with SS-Brigadeführer Walter Friedrich Schellenberg, commander of all SS-Einsatzgruppen units from 1941 to 1945, and from 1942 to the end of the war, the Chief of Amt VI, Ausland-SD and the immediate supervisor of SS-Obersturmbannführer Otto Skorzeny.

It stands to reason if Dulles was on good terms with SS-Brigadeführer Schellenberg, why not Schellenberg's immediate subordinate, SS-Obersturmbannführer Skorzeny?

Thank you.  I wonder if a personal connection might have been important in the machinations discussed in Coup In Dallas in regard to the JFKA.  It can only be speculation I guess but if what you say tilts the needle towards it being a real possibility a bit that helps in the bigger picture.

Let us not forget, that when Kennedy was formulating his peace speech, he was tossing around ideas with Norman Cousins, strongly anti nuclear, and the Pope.

If you have not seen the fine film narrated by Morgan Freeman, A President Betrayed, you should.  They found Cousins' daughter.  She had remarkable pictures of her family in Nikita K's villa in Crimea at that time.  And this is how Cousins served as a go between in the negotiations for the Limited Test Ban Treaty.

Compare this to Biden, who as Jeff Sachs wrote, had reportedly not talked to Putin in well over a year. So obviously there has been no progress on a truce in Ukraine.

As per the civil rights speech, it was Bobby's idea to deliver it that night, after the two students had been entered into the university over Wallace and his  "segregation now, segregation forever" protests.

The first draft of that speech was written by novelist Richard Yates, working for RFK.

As we know, JFK left the script and the Sorenson revised speech near the end and essentially spoke contemporaneously.

It was that speech, and the showdown with Wallace, that really energized the drive for Kennedy's civil rights bill.  Which had been submitted in February, but which JFK now revised and resubmitted.

Incredibly, that bill took about a year to get through and if you were not there, you do not understand what a big deal it was.  Every time a vote was switched, it got on the news.  There was a big board outside the Capitol with the current tally on it. Someone like Roger Mudd would lead the nightly news with that story.  As some journalists have noted, it was the Bill of the Century.

If you truly care so much about peace then why aren't you criticizing the man who invaded a sovereign country unprovoked?

No amount of gaslighting or living in an alternate reality is ever going to erase Putin's war crimes. Zero. Zip. Nada.

Should have known better.

BTW, here is my review of Cory Taylor's A President Betrayed

That film was released almost a decade ago, and still is so little known.

Matt:

What I meant was I should have known you would pick out that one sentence. Never explaining why Biden will not negotiate, or why Merkel said what she did about the Minsk proposals.

Thanks for posting that Matthew. everyone should watch it.

I did not know it was in theaters.

If you don't know why "Biden" will not negotiate, you haven't been paying attention.  The Ukrainians don't want to negotiate--they want their land back!  What's Biden supposed to do, force a negotiation?!

Thank you. Yes, of course. What in the devil is there to "negotiate"? Russia invaded a peaceful, liberal democracy in a naked act of aggression. It is just bizarre to see ultra-liberals attacking Biden and/or Ukraine for not negotiating with Putin. It's like arguing that a woman who is resisting an attempted rape should "negotiate" with her rapist.

It is sad to see the lack of moral clarity and the lack of a basic sense of right and wrong that some liberals exhibit when it comes to Ukraine.

Anyway, as I have mentioned, there are several hawkish statements in the American University speech (the peace speech), and JFK delivered the very hawkish Berlin and Fort Worth speeches after the peace speech.

One gets the feeling that certain ultra-liberals here would stop caring about the JFK assassination if they were forced to face the fact that JFK was not a peacenik liberal but a right-leaning centrist who favored massive across-the-board tax cuts, fiscal restraint, a balanced approach toward labor issues, a strong national defense, and the containment of communism.

Never ceases to amaze me members of a site like this, dedicated to long term historical research, could be so myopic on current events.

Paul- are you inferring Ukraine has no right to defend itself against an unprovoked invasion?

Remember people, Joe Biden is the end all and be all of the Democratic party.

We need to help him beat a guy who is all probability will be in prison next November.

First guy to run from office from there since Debs..

People need to stop apologizing for Putin. It's grotesque.

Putin's invasion of Ukraine is "the unspeakable"  act of the 21st century. All of our hopes of decreasing spending toward the war machine are dashed. Our best hope now is that it's a 5-10 year detour of increased defense spending. But it looks like there will be some areas of damage that may not get better.

And guess what, the complete release of the JFKA files is not going to make a dent in that. So whatever fantasies you have about that, you might as well start trying to  deal with the world as it is.

But by that, I don't mean to advocate and can understand why people would be  against U.S. funding of the war.

It's interesting that Jim trots out Jeffrey Sachs and just to give you another viewpoint. I read a Socialist leaning publication a few years back that was dealing with the question of what happened to Russia after the Soviet Union dissolved and they attacked Jeffrey Sachs as making a number of economic proposals in the 90's that the Russians adopted with disastrous results! While conceding that the Russians didn't necessarily follow all the recommendations of the Western economists.
Anyway, I just thought it was worth mentioning.
