Compared to the usual mid-terms, something tells me we will see an uptick in voter turnout this November... ;)

I wonder if anyone believes that Thomas, Alito, Gorsuch, Kavanaugh, and Coney Barrett would have been confirmed by the Senate if they had told the truth about their intentions to overturn Roe v. Wade.

This Republican SCOTUS scam was decades in the making.

Susan Collins has a lot to answer  for.  She bought the BS twice, from Kavanaugh and Gorsuch.   She played the sucker and she did it self righteously.   Too bad we cannot rerun her election.

In reflecting on this today and what Alito wrote, one can see that this all flows from that hallowed concept of the right called originalism.

So what Alito does is he uses that doctrine to say, well, if those oh so smart guys back in the 13 colonies never thought of it, then it simply does not exist.  (Ignoring the fact that they ignored  slavery and thought black Americans only counted as a 3/5 vote and women did not count at all.)

This has always been the goal of original intent, to turn back the clock on all the things that The Federalist Society did not like about everything from about the Warren Court forward in time.  The Right despised what Warren did in 1954 in Brown vs Board.  In fact, Eisenhower actually advised him to vote against that case, which tells you a lot about who he and Nixon were.

So Clarence Thomas, who was groomed to replace Marshall--more Federalist Society payback--now sees this as just the beginning of a jihad.

Let us not  forget, it was Biden who helped bring us Thomas. He was oh so kind to the right wingers during the Anita Hill hearings that people like Orrin Hatch--Orrin Hatch!-- thanked him.  Biden did not want Wright to testify, when she would have really hurt Thomas' credibility. Joe did not meet his moment. Unlike what his idol, Bobby Kennedy did, during the McClellan hearings.

Susan Collins also didn't convict Trump in the first impeachment trial because she said that she thinks Trump won't do it again, because "he's learned his lesson."

But of course Jim , you were also an apologist for Trump in the trial quoting Jonathan Turley that it didn't "rise to the standard of impeachment."  In light of all that's happened Jim. Do you still think your judgment was sound?.

"According to The New York Times, the hearings were framed with the intent to use the select committee largely to “recast the midterm message” and “give [Democrats] a platform for making a broader case about why they deserve to stay in power.”

Interesting observation. Probably true.

"However, to prove this case, the Justice Department would need to show an intent by Trump to obstruct an official proceeding of Congress. That cannot be based simply on the fact that he and his supporters in Congress planned to challenge the certification of the vote. Challenges to certification have been made by Democrats, including Select Committee Chairman Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.), who voted to challenge the certification of the 2004 results of President George W. Bush’s reelection; committee member Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) sought to challenge Trump’s certification in 2016."

The American public has amnesia, we all know that. But after 2000, 2004 and 2016 some Donks wanted to overturn the national election on various perceived voting irregularities, and mounted challenges in the Electoral College in 2004 and 2016.

---30---

"An obstruction charge would have to show that Trump was planning for violence or actively supported the violence (on 1/6) as it unfolded. However, it now appears that National Guard personnel were offered by the Trump Defense Department — but declined — four days before the riot."

This is doubly curious. Not only were National Guard troops declined, but the Capitol Police and the DC Metro Police---6,000 officers---were not seen in force, and then stood down on 1/6.

What is the reason security was scant on 1/6?

There are a couple more sessions of the 1/6 committee TV show, so maybe they have new stuff.

So far, the connections between the Trump White House the scrum at the Capitol...no evidence yet.

Roe v Wade couldn't have been overturned. This must be the "Fake News" I hear so much about, because I was repeatedly assured by the fine political pundits on this forum that the left-wing Trump-hating, all-powerful Deep State was running everything.

Harvard Law Professor Noah Feldman explains, briefly, why the Dobbs ruling is a catastrophe.

Trumplicans need to tune out the right wing propagandist, Jonathan Turley, and study Feldman.

Murder Totals Far Higher in Trump 'Red' States Than Biden 'Blue' States

Red counties have higher mortality rates than blue counties — and the gap is growing

"Curiously, the "mortality gap" between red and blue counties was evident long before the pandemic began”.

No wonder Republicans had to ban abortion. Next, you will probably see calls saying “It’s your patriotic Confederate duty to bear children”. How far will it be to forced pregnancies?

There are already calls in the right-wing media to stalk and follow pregnant women around to make sure they don’t have abortions.

This is a nightmare.
